Sorry for the late answer. The game isn't region locked, but there might be some restrictions placed on play based on how far away you are from whoever you're playing with, for the sake of network performance.
There's a couple of docs in the pins (little thumbtack icon in the top right) that might answer any more questions you have! One is a summary of what we know about the game (my doc) and the other is a compilation of answers from devs in the now-defunct #❓│old-team-answers-pre-alpha (Vlad's doc), though that document is no longer updated

I really hope there isn't tethering :/, what use is an open world game without having to be 5ft away from your partner every step of the way and getting teleported to them if you aren't. I really hope this isn't the case with palia.

The only times in an MMO I can think of when you would do tethering would be in a dungeon, and Palia doesn't really have those to our knowledge (although there might be similar things in the future)

I wonder if any of the mini-games will be crafting related in a way similar to the old MMO Free Realms? I remember the mining was a not-terribly-exciting matching game, but smelting I think had an element of skill. You had to pour your molten metal carefully so you didn't spill it and could actually make full ingots. That stuck with me as something more engaging than WoW's "click button and walk away from computer" Certainly not as convenient, though, so maybe a way to opt out of it would be good too.

Its less than 3 years ( '2 years and 7 months') from release but Alpha is due between now and June next year ( 'by the first half of next year' ) . Make sure you have signed up for testing and filled in the survey and cross your fingers 🙂

yeah, mmos take on average 5 to 6 years to develop. They are half way through that time frame and announced during pre-alpha so they get additional testing/feedback earlier in the development cycle than normal
