HM isn't intended to be an advanced game at all though. that's a very very casual game. palia, as they are marketing it, is beyond that as they've mentioned taking elements from SDV, BOTW, and ACNH.

I'm not personally familiar with that one! But I'll look at it. I find that indie creators are more likely to do things like this as it actually brings them worthwhile attention. Big companies would rather coast. It's why Blizzard is still developing WoW properties instead of making a new MMO. Costs more and is more risky to do something new and fresh.

Call me oldschool, but F2P is not something I'm willing to get involved with. I'll be sad if they take that route. I'm a fan of the subscription method, with perhaps a way to convert in-game currency into a subscription if you have all the time in the world to play but no money for a sub. Then you either earn gameplay with money or earn gameplay with time spent playing. But none of this "buy a token with IRL cash and sell it to broke players with time on their hands to farm gold" business. Make it purely within the game, maybe a quest giver who takes your currency in exchange for an item that is bound to you and when used grants game time.

The problem with having npcs move around comes down to the pathing algorithm they use and how naturaly they want the npc to move around. Basic pathing looks awful but you can have an almost* unlimited number of npcs running around, but they will act kinda like ants. You can make it look more natural by adding some variation to the route they will take but it will still look kinda strange unless you have the npcs try to keep a set distance away while moving, but this will also eat up cpu processing power on the server's cpu. Alternatively you could put every npc on rails no pathing at all just set routes but that can start to look stale fast.
