The shareholders expect returns, PERIOD. And they will get their returns, even if it means quality, employees, or even ethics have to suffer for it.

Take activision and the goblin running it. Blizzard and Activision use to make top tier stuff. Now they make anything that will meet the quarterly dividend markers and they will hurt and sacrifice anything and anyone to get to those markers.
