I disagree. Even if cosmetics are the only way to outwardly show progression, I think monetizing them can work. Pay to win would give you an advantage in gameplay against other people. You're not playing against people in a game like this. It's pretty simple to offer items that can only be earned through in game achievements while also offering items that can be monetized.

I'll admit I enjoy Warframe's idea on cash shop.

What you can buy immediately in the shop can be gotten with time.
There are things you'll be excited for and want immediately, but sometimes patience is needed if you can't spend.

And hey. Maybe at some point you can splurge a bit and get a cosmetic. (Or farm for something expensive and sell it for premium currency)

The issue I have with cash shops isn't really about the principle of the cosmetic itself. It's that over time, shareholders will see the value of the shop as greater than the value of the base content, and development will shift inevitably to put the "best foot forward" in the cash shop while everything else stagnates.

To many games have allowed their games to be played solo'd, because it's called catering to those that don't want to spend their time just always looking for a group and just playing the game. If you want a Solo game, play games that are offline with no Community. The MARKETED EXPERIENCE is one that can be enjoyed Solo yes, but with the community along with them. Well yes, but that doesn't seem to be in the core design description for this game in particular. This game in most of the announcement descriptions I've seen seems to be heavily focusing on community and the social side of the game. While you're not wrong that if a game is a hit with a secondary market you don't just ignore them, at the same time, there's a core gameplay concept that the game is being designed around, that doesn't suddenly just go away because an additional market was picked up.

well it also doesn't mean you are forced to do content with that community. It just means you are there, and they are there too. So interactions are possible. Too many MMo's try to force those interactions on you. Which often leads to some pretty snobby people. WoW is a classic example. People get snobby because they know they are needed for content. Eh realistically I'm not a huge fan of this take. I agree that content should be open to whoever wants to do it, but some of the best social aspects of the Olden days of MMOs like Star Wars Galaxies was the relationship between combat classes who went out to gather things, and the non combat classes that provided services to them. Similarly, issues with attitude in terms of role selection isn't really a thing connected to game design more a thing connected to however communities form. It's not Tanks/Healers are inherently more neccesary than DPS, it's that DPS is far more popular with players, leading to the scarcity. The same could be said of say Gatherers and Crafters in an economy based game if 70% of the playerbase all picked one role.

If a group doesn't have DPS in raids in WoW they can't finish encounters before enrage mechanics go off, DPS classes are just as necessary, it's just in terms of WoWs overall player base, Damage specs make up the overwhelming majority of the options and player base.

Housing in Genshin Impact takes place in a teapot. You can pick 1 of 3 Realms and you can literally build you own little Village (without Villagers) within the Teapot as well as Design the Interior of the Main Building. With the next patch you'll also be able to place the Characters you've obtained so far within the realm. In time you can unlock all 3 Realms available and decorate each of them individually to your liking. 🙂
