The problem with humans in most games (and why they're boring) is that they're relegated to the "default". They're made deliberately vague, because why would you have to explain humans, and that's super dull. Humans have infinite capacity to be interesting, you just have to make them interesting instead of going "it's a human, job done."

I'm not saying they don't. I'm saying that the viewpoint that "humans are boring" is shortsighted. Humans have too much inherent possibility to be boring.

By the same token, a lot of game devs/writers take shortcuts on their nonhuman races by going "look, they have horns and a tail! aren't they cool?" without actually putting work into making the people interesting. If you're just gonna play a human in a funny hat, there's no reason you can't play a human.

This game won't have combat focus, it won't be an experience where you will have a lot of combat progression.

One of the things I like about Wildstar is they did a great job of making their humans interesting, by writing a thousand years of cultural development and social conflict into their backstory. You can still play a boring human, but you almost have to completely ignore all that worldbuilding to do so.
