How are people catching enough maws to have giant cooking parties? I'm not sure if they are just constantly fishing all day, my luck is bad, or there's a mechanic I'm missing?

The only legitimate way is to have multiple people doing some pretty intensive fishing and splitting up the fish contribution (or taking turns being the one to contribute for the week, so they have time to build them up between parties). Large enough communities with enough fishing enthusiasts could manage 100 Maws every couple of weeks, I'd reckon.

Maybe once a week if they had a large enough roster - a community I'm associated with hosts a weekly fishing competition, and they collectively (among 20ish people) pull in about 15 starred maws over the course of the competition.

Elderwood Bay (Saltwater) has the highest average gold per cast from what I've read, but only just above Elderwood Ponds (Freshwater, doesn't have to be a pond. Rivers count). This is with Glow Worms. Unsure about profitability with other baits, as they're just much less profitable.
I don't know how much Maws skews things. It could be that if you ignore Maws, Ponds could be better than Bay, but why ignore it?
Now, if you only catch things you care about, you're likely to gain less profit over time but more profit per bait used, so up to you on that front.

Anywhere not EW hardly compares, EW sell prices are just higher.

The main adjustment is that the PC mouse movement for the reticle doesn't really have acceleration/deceleration the way the stick does on controller, so it's a lot more responsive/precise. It can be a bit of an adjustment, but should get easier with practice.

The jumping isn't any different: release the button (left mouse button) when the fish is jumping (same when the bobber has been dragged out of the safe zone), keep up with the fish's movements, then resume reeling when the reticle is green again

Go slow with the mouse, you almost have to learn the fishes movements and start moving ahead of time, but a slight jolt will move your safe zone dramatically, patience with the clicker, steadiness with the mouse.

It likes to go pretty far side-to-side and also tends to double-jump, but it's very predictable in its pattern. You can reel in on the "backswing" after the double jump, usually.

You probably already know this, but make sure you stop reeling while it is jumping or if your bobber has been dragged out of the safe zone

I don't know, but maybe something like a 5-10% chance of it unlocking a new item guaranteed. That way you can still get unlucky and it takes a while to get a new item, but on average you'd get a new item fairly reliably.
I don't know though, I could be entirely wrong and just trying to find reasons to not abandon all hope, because the grind is still horrible

Ok...are rays really that hard to catch? I've been trying for the giant kilima giant ray and flame tongue ray to complete the bundles for the last two weeks. Those are the only two fish I've not caught in the whole game. I'm so confused 😅 I've caught 3 maws for goodness sake. And I can't catch two dang rays? Had to read that a few times but you should be able to mine copper with the makeshift pickaxe. You just need to mine the smaller nodes for that. Then with the copper you can upgrade to copper pickaxe.

Number of worms and fertiliser you get out is purely based on the value of the item you put in.
You get one glow worm per 50 value (rounded), so things with higher sell prices are better.
Grilled fish (made from glow worm fish) and food from profit based cooking parties tend to be some of the better options

Cakes like Klepto says are decent, though you don't get more worms for it being a sweet item. You just get a different fertiliser type

Just to be clear here, you get your full amount of bonus exp as long as you have enough focus in the bar. If you have 100% focus boost and pick up an item worth 10 exp, as long as you have 10 focus, you will get the full 100% bonus exp. It doesn't matter if you only have 10 focus or if your bar is completely full.
You use 1 focus for each bonus exp you get.

Elderwood saltwater (so, De Mer coastline or Deep Woods), 6PM to 6AM, worms or glow worms. Glow worms have a MUCH higher chance of netting you an eel. Starred fish only come from the bubble nodes.

If you've got glow worms on and you're pulling up piksii floatfish and lake sharks, you're in the right spot :)

Regular worms during evening /night at Kilima Rivers (I fish behind the inn), followed by glow worms morning/day in Ponds (can be home plots or Kilima /Bahari ponds)

As you level up your fishing skill it gets a bit easier as you will have access to buffs that increase the size of the safe zone, rod health, etc. It also takes a bit of practice to get used to.

The official name for them are fishing nodes I believe, but most people call them bubbles. They always give star quality fish, but are harder to catch as a result

I think you unlock Fisherman's Brew at level 2 Fishing, and this buff is WELL worth it. So cheap and you get 5 per craft

If you want to increase your chances, the only way is by using hook speed buffs (Trout Dinner, Fishing With Friends or Hook Speed hook attachment) to increase the number of things you reel in per time spent fishing

What do you mean? You can't get those recipes in the EW, but if you need a break from fishing, then absolutely go do something else

You're in the right spot, it is a rare fish though, and a rare fish you can only find for half of the day cycle (evening, night, day).
I think De Mer Dock is the best area to fish for it in personally (though you could also try Deep Woods water too, it also appears there)
You could try and ensure you have Fishing With Friends Buff before you start fishing in the evening, helps you get a couple more fish in the time you can fish for Eleroo (Hook Speed hook attachment and Trout Dinner are also options with the same effect, but as most of your time will be running between nodes, stacking more than 1 of th ebuffs is unlikely to change much)
Recycle any of the fish you find and would otherwise sell into grilled fish and chuck that into glow worm farms - it's a good way to replenish your glow worm supplies (and quick to grill them if you make 4-5 campfires and rotate around them).
So all I can say is good luck!!

When I was new, I also struggled a lot with fishing, and the jump from Fine to Exquisite absolutely made the difference betweeen glow worm fish being impossible for me and being actually doable. The stats upgrade on it is actually kind of ridiculous ngl

It gives you a longer grace period when the fish is jumping before your rod health starts taking damage

Which was nice, because my reaction time has never been very good at all XD

You will need to buy the recipes to craft the upgrades from the various guild stores. For fishing rod, talk to Einar :)

You need to be at least level 2 in that skill before the guild shop for it will become available to you, and different upgrades unlock as you level up

If it's the second one, then check whether you have multiple stacks of bait. The bait display on your rod for some reason only shows the first stack of the equipped bait in your ammo pouch (lowest left), but it consumes worms from the middle stack (or second, if only two stacks)

It is just because that node is really close to land (being that rock) so it doesnt allow fishing, you just have to go a little to the right side of that node to fish. It is annoying but it works

size booster hook AND fisherman's brew AND fish stew (makes the reticle more side-to-side responsive) is what I'd suggest, and also potentially look into adjusting your mouse sensitivity if that's an option, so you don't have to move it so far in realspace to get the same amount of movement in-game? Not sure if that would help or not.

I also deal with hand pain and a vertical mouse made a biiiig difference for me (though it may not for you), if you don't already have one/if that's an option you can look into.

yeah, i see a lot of talk about fishing in that channel! esp recently regarding making it more accessible to actually reel in the more difficult fish. i think as a community, nobody would be mad if they made it easier for people or just gave more options. if people love the fishing mini game, they can do it all day, but also it would be nice to have the option to have an "easier" version. of course rng would still factor in so you still have to put in the time and determination to get the rare catches, but i know how frustrating it is to finally have a rare or epic fish on the line and lose it because of the mechanism and then wonder when you'll run into it again and, if you do, if you'll be able to reel it in.
for me, it's definitely a skill issue when it comes to the reeling, and i do need to check my mouse settings and of course fisherman's brew helps and i still have to play around with the other buffs,

PC or controller? Makes a huge difference. PC much easier. Use fisherman's brew and whatever focus foods you're able to make like sushi, sashimi, fish stew etc. If you're able, get hooks from Einar too. Big thing is to back off with reeling when they're in the air and try to keep them in the green zone. Don't stress too much tho, it just takes a bit of practice and getting to know how each fish behaves. Good luck

They are uncommon-type rarity with regular worms, but common-type rarity with glow worms, and goodness do they ever show up with glow worms XD

In reality, you're equally likely to get a piksii floatfish as a lake shark, RNG randomness just means you get streaks of floatfish and streaks of sharks

Mermaids can be found in any Elderwood freshwater fishing area, including ponds in caves, open-air ponds, and the rivers in the northeast side of the map (Mitana, Honeymiel, Jeunesse). Basically, anywhere that ISN'T the De Mer coast or the Deep Woods. Glow worms only, any time of day, ~1-2% drop chance.

I not sure I agree that it makes sense to cook with your starred fish if you're cooking solo. You run a higher risk of the recipe turning out unstarred and potentially losing value compared to the fish sold by itself D:

(Cooking parties where other people are providing the other ingredients/speeding up the process are another thing, but those are generally speaking not worth the time/effort/mats with any fish worth less than 400g if unstarred/600g if starred.)

Unstarred fish, though, always yes, I would definitely recommend cooking them first :) Either you lose no value and gain some cooking XP (grilled fish), gain a little bit of money even with unstarred results (fish stew with unstarred other materials), or gain a nice bonus +50% value over the materials if it turns out starred.

Eleroo eels are the star for me. They have about a 15% drop rate with glow worms and they're worth slightly more than cloudfish, which were pre-EW the gold standard for rare fish for cooking parties.

In general, fishing in Elderwood will overall bring in more gold per cast (assuming you reel in every fish you hook) than anywhere else.

Of course, epics are nice, too, but not something you can count on unless you have a lot of patience.

(specifically I was asking this because the recipe you use makes a difference in how much potential there is to increase the value of your ingredients over whatever you could otherwise do with them)

grilled fish with starred fish turn out exactly the same value as the two fish used if it turns out starred, for example. Zero reward for the effort beyond the cooking XP, plus some (though admittedly very little) risk of losing 33% of its value to an unstarred result.

For solo sashimi with lake sharks, if cooking solo with starred fish, starred rice, and unstarred spice sprouts, IF it turns out starred, you get back 387g of sashimi.

But... if you instead

• put the shark in the bin
• seed the rice and sell the seeds
• save the sprouts so you don't have to buy them later
  ...then that's all worth 380g.

So, 7g return (not even 2% improvement on opportunity cost), and that's not even accounting for the risk of losing money on an unstarred result, which is somewhere above a one in twenty chance.

You can also use trout dinner for fishing boost, that is unlocked by hitting lvl 3 friendship with Einar. Maybe that's easier?
Also try to fish next to people, it will give you a bonus boost ✨

Yeah it takes hours in Kilima. I used to get them quite a bit but not so much anymore. One time I got three starred ones back to back in Kilima and that was crazy, they were all within 2 minutes of each other too

Been farming for 3 Rubies, 3 emerald, 1 sapphire and 3 jasper Friday and Saturday. This is what I have gotten during that time, 1 sapphire, 2 jaspers is the only starred I've gotten. 660 copper bars, 200 silver bars, 240 palium bars. It's soo bizarre how hard it is to get.

Looking at the amount of quartz reminds me why I stopped mining in Kilima. I wanted more starred emeralds but the grind was normally fruitless, while mining in Elderwoods yeilds seemingly better gem drops

Quick fishing tips: Only reel in fish when the catch circle is green, if it is yellow or red let go. You also don't need to keep the whole fish within the circle, just the bobber. Use fisherman's brew, trout dinner and sushi, sashimi and fish stew all together as the bonuses stack. Hm, you shouldn't need to move your mouse vertically at all - the reticle is completely side-to-side movements, and bringing the fish closer to you is only from holding down the mouse button (or another keybind if you have one set)

Sure thing! And while you're at it, make sure you stop reeling if the safe zone isn't green: if the fish jumps or the bobber gets pulled out of the safe zone, stop reeling to reduce the amount of damage done to your rod health, move your reticle to keep up with the fish as well as you can, and then resume reeling when the fish is back in the water and inside the safe zone.

You can also just hang out without reeling and stay on top of your bobber to recover some rod health. If you finish pulling in the fish with full rod health (even if you lost and regained it in the middle), you earn an XP bonus for a Perfect Catch :)

I find if I stay in one spot, that I know they spawn, and don't move and just keep fishing... By the time I've used 60-90 worms a rare will appear. Then by 80-120 worms an epic will appear. Not always, sometimes it's just random but I think it's like bug hunting where you clear out the bugs you don't want by catching them to spawn the ones you do want

Also I usually use fishermans brew, sashimi and sushi because the effects stack and then keep trout dinner for when i cant get a player boost

No bait is needed for fishing plushies. It's all just RNG. The only plushies you need bait for is the fins as you get them as a extra drop from catching the sharks. Land shark has a chance to give either regular fin or xl fin while maws is 100% guaranteed fin drop upon catch.

In that case: anything cheap. 9g, 11g, or 16g forage and meats will all produce 40 or 45g worth of stuff (1 glow worm and 3 or 4 fertilizer depending on sell value). Considering that you can sell the fertilizer alone for 15-20g, that more than compensates you for the forage you put in, plus some pocket change and a "free" glow worm :)

That'll get you 1 glow worm per hour, but they run overnight without needing any babysitting, so 24 glow worms per RL day per glow worm farm. I usually run 4 glow worm farms and have more glow worms than I can reasonably use.

Glow worm production scales with the sell value of whatever you put in, but the breakpoint for getting 2 glow worms isn't until you hit 76g, since the formula is (in essence) half the sell value divided by the glow worm value, midpoints rounded down

The enchanted pupfish is tiny so when you’re fishing and the fish pops up, if it’s not the right one just don’t click, the fish will swim away. Remove your rod and then fish again, that way you won’t use up a glow worm 🫶🏼

Yea it’s rlly rng honestly, for me I caught them easily (1 starred, 1 infected, and 1 unstarred). In times like these where it is difficult to find, I try to keep myself from going insane by thinking abt how all the fish I catch I can sell, so it doesn’t feel like a waste of time at the very least 😭 now in terms of catching the maws, I have struggled far too long with catching it before finally doing so

Yes, it doesn't 100% track with your cursor speed, though I think your aiming speed setting might also affect it? (Not 100% sure on that.) The buff from fish stew can be helpful - it lets the reticle move side-to-side more responsively. There is also a safe zone speed booster hook (which I think Nebula Cakes mentioned), but I actually find it makes the reticle move too fast and I overshoot 😅

hi all how would you catch an enchanted pupfish? do i need to grind to level 10 and get glow worms or is there another way?

yeah you need glow worms

but they're not hard to find

Not all the way to level 10 - you can produce them using a glow worm farm. I forget what level the recipe unlocks; is it 7? It needs flow wood to craft, iirc.
