Focus food is just any meal of your preference to keep your focus bar full to give you the bonuses for all the XP you earn while out doing skills.
Everyone has a favorite, mine is starred chili oil dumplings (525 focus) cuz it's easy/quick to prepare solo and I have all of the ingredients on hand from my garden and only have to purchase the oil so it's not expensive to make either.

I'm at grove when it spawns. call out. people show up. it's like 1.15 or 1.30 and they say 3 am cut. so I start just whacking a large at 2.30 and everyone got upset when someone joined in. last tree was chopped at 3. nobody was otw. people need to calm down

3 is a very common chop time in my experience as well since it's easier to chop on the hour rather than in between from what i've seen

Sometimes this game is so funny. I was chopping large trees in Bahari and every tree had 1-3 muujin in it. But when I chopped a medium tree I was suddenly surrounded by 8 muujin! What were they all doing in that tree? 😂

Question about cooking parties that say "overprep welcome" - what is the point of that? Why is it good or bad? Like doesn't that just result in wasted ingredients for whoever is overprepping?

the people who "overprep" still get the recipe when its completed, so its basically an extra spot if the other roles are filled.

It's good because you don't have to stay for all rounds, you don't have to stress that you can't miss any round because ppl will wait for you to complete recipe. You can usually op more that one ingredient so if you don't have enough mats you can switch to something else. It's also good for the host because if someone with main role has some emergency or just want to go to bathroom all other ppl don't have to wait and can go on with party. The only bad thing that comes from op I can think of is when there are a lot of op and ppl "steal" main roles that can't be done multiple times (like baking or spreading in cake parties) but it's usually resolved if you explain what can or can't be op. You can't "waste" ingredients when you get the same result as main role, for example there are 3 ppl that op wheat in apple pie recipe and all these ppl will get 3x apple pie when recepie is done. All of them used 1 ingredient and got 3x dish so basically it's the same if these 3 ppl where main roles in different parties buuut it's harder to organize and fill 3 parties than one. There are roles that are hard to fill, usually with expensive ingredients like vampire crab in crab pot pie, so it will be hard to organize a lot of parties but if you allow ppl to come and op all can get profit. I hope this explanation helps somehow

So using the apple pie example, if you have people OPing the sweetleaf, it doesn't mean other people have to use more mats to make more pies to "complete" the recipe? Basically whoever brought more sweetleaf just gets the pies too, but doesn't force everyone to make another pie. Also like only a role that has ingredients can be OP? Am I understanding that?

Yes that only means you will make 1 extra leaf and no one else will be affected, you will get pies like everyone else. well theoretically you can op roles that don't need ingredients but that will be waaaay more complicated. Non ingredient roles usually need ingredient roles to be done first. Like in apple pie non ingredient role is to mix the filling but to do that someone else has to mix leaf, chop apples and spice sprouts sooo you will need 3 more ppl to op other things so you can op your thing if you want to op oven in cake recipe you will need someone else to do 1 extra leaf then 1 extra batter so you can bake, if you want to op oven in bouillabaisse recipe you need someone else to do 1 extra wheat or potato ect. Practically it's really hard thing to do, it's easier to op oven in bouillabaisse recipe because you only need one more extra person to do wheat or potato but I don't think anyone would like to op apples in apple pie recipe

I don't know about this, but if you want to avoid it, you can buy a safe at Tish's store! so no items from the safe will be used in food or furniture recipes

You can choose which fish you want to use by clicking on the fish icon. If you don’t want some of your fish to be used, get a lockbox from Tish’s store, anything you put in there won’t be used for crafting/cooking

went to s outskirts to cut trees for xp. had a few turn flow. grove spawned at n outskirts, and then 5 of my cut trees respawned as flow. turned a 4 tree grove into a 9 tree grove

Getting so very frustrated with the game freezing when going to mix and forcing me to quit the game and log back in! The little taunting whisk just moves back and forth and jamming on every button on the controllers does zip! Anyone else have this? I have had 3 recipes fail, using star ingredients in the last 2 play sessions (PS I’m on switch …. Think this is a switch issue?) I have been on Ethernet and wifi and same problems… star spice sprouts are hard to find! 😭😭

No, nothing works, I jam all the buttons and triggers for well over a minute, trying to jar it, even wait a few mins, hoping it clicks into gear. It isn’t a case of not knowing the right button, I do a decent amount of cooking these days, it is that the buttons aren’t doing anything. - the game just freezes. I have even tried to reconnect the hand controls to the switch (I play hooked to my tv) Thank you, tho, appreciate the help!

ingredients and speed are the two determining factors. cooking with others is faster, so it helps with the speed factor. even then rng plays a part (cooking parties will sometimes have unstarred rounds even if they aren't slow)

I wish I'd kept track of grilled mushrooms before I reached cooking lvl 50 because I feel they might reveal the purest chance for a starred dish. Above lvl 50, 1 in 3 grilled mushrooms is starred when starting with non starred mushrooms. Since timing has no role in that it feels like a solid metric.

Quick question, has the chopping recently become easier? I had actually sent in a feedback about it requiring a lot of precise timing for the chop versus the very sloppy timing of rolling out dough, and asked if it were possible to allow a bit more "slop in the chop" , LMAO. Gathering starred Sweet leaf is a huge process and takes a very very long time. And, it is not a requirement to ensure starred cakes. The way to ensure that is to have starred blueberries to start and starred apples for the fruit frosting. The rest of it is chance! You will get a ratio of unstarred cakes, the ratio depends on people using starred and unstarred fruit.

Depends, the dragon shrine ups your focus to 1000 but the phenix shrine gives a focus bonus to level up faster, which makes focus worth it. Cost of money compared to value of leveling up by focus

I like to make Starred Chili Oil Dumplings and have for quite some time now as my go to focus food. The only ingredient you need to purchase is the oil, the rest I get from my garden/hunting and keep plenty in stock, and those give 525 focus per. Plus they are quick/easy to make.

I have tested this multiple times with both kitchen cooking and the campfire. You must participate in the recipe (i.e., by either starting the recipe, completing a minigame, or taking a transient ingredient out of the oven when it's done) in order to receive a copy of the food.

I am personally biased toward the dumplings. They are relaxed, the steps are simple with no mid-cooking timers to keep track of (the flip is at the end), and it doesn't require any particularly difficult chopping. It also has a reasonable focus-per-opportunity-cost ratio.

apparently you fill your inventory with whatever, or with 1 of each regular seed type, and check the loot bag. if it lets you pick it up that means it's something in your bag (regular seed), so don't pick it up. instead you reset (relaunch? change zones? idk) and check again until it's not able to be picked up, because it's a flow seed you aren't currently carrying. then you just make a spot in inventory and pick it up. I haven't done it myself, so don't know how well it works

it's more of an exploit than anything, not sure if loot resetting would be against tos. it's like resetting for a shiny pokemon!

In general, solo cooking is not very profitable compared to other things you could do with the ingredients.

The base sell value for the three dishes produced by a recipe is determined by the following formula:
1.125 * (sum of the unstarred sell values of all ingredients)
(divide that by 3 to get the sell value of one dish)

• When a recipe turns out starred, that base amount is multiplied by 1.5.

Because most recipes require at least one store-bought ingredient, if a recipe comes out unstarred, you actually lose money compared to the money spend on store-bought ingredients plus what you could have gotten from selling the other ingredients without further processing. (If the dish is starred, there can be some profit, but rarely enough to justify the effort of cooking.)

Recipes that use only gathered ingredients at unstarred quality do turn a small profit even if the dish is unstarred.

The major exception is grilled fish (for unstarred fish you plan to sell anyway) - if grilled fish turns out starred, it is worth 1.5x the value of the fish used. (Starred fish is better sold directly.)

Yep, it's an item that they will accept even if you give it to them every day/even if it's not on their Weekly Wants list.

If you are friendship level 2 with her, then there are only the 2 weekly wants you have available, her starstone (expensive, but 40 points), and so that's only 3 days of gifts out of the whole week. The other 4 days you can give her one of her "always liked" gifts. (Or you can do what I did, which was not worry about the weekly wants and just focus on being really consistent with the always-liked gifts, and chatting as often as I could.)

So, this question prompted me to go digging on the wiki etc. and double-check the number of steps for each dish. Turns out that most of the numbers in that column were incorrect, because some were based on the "recommended steps if cooking solo" guides, while newer dishes (which didn't have those guides yet) were based on counting the number of minigame steps listed.

• Avg. # of steps: about 6.6; 5.6 if you exclude the outliers (Celebration Cake, Muujin Bahari, and Lucky Braised Fish)
• Avg. focus per step: 46 (well, actually triple this number since each recipe makes 3 dishes, but anyway...)
• Avg. focus per dish: 295/442 starred... but 254/380 starred if you exclude the 3 outliers, which all give more focus than your bar's capacity anyway.

It could be a glitch (especially if you're on Switch), but just to double check, are you holding down the button while it goes around and then releasing when the dot lines up with the target?

(I ask because that minigame isn't the most intuitive for a lot of folks, so sometimes people will understand it as wanting them to press to start and then press again when it lines up. Doesn't help that it gives you the tutorial when you're already on a time limit!)

re: making money with cooking, the main mechanics there seem to be (1) push up the base sell value of the variable ingredients (the "any" options) (2) push up the number of participants to multiply the output/split the costs as much as possible. The sell value of one finished dish is 0.375 x the unstarred sell prices of the ingredients added together, so if the ingredients sell for more, the value added by the cooking multiplier is higher. (The issue with store bought items, of course, is that they cost double their sell value.)

And the other factor to take into account is opportunity costs, i.e., "if I didn't cook this dish, what else could I do with the ingredients to make money?" - because you have to choose. Generally, for garden produce, the main alternative is to process them into seeds, preserves, or (glow) worms and fertilizer. So the actual value of, say, 1 starred apple is 144g minus processing time, not 96g - because if you didn't cook the apple, you could probably make it into jam instead.

That's my understanding so far, anyway! I'm sure folks who have been doing this longer than I have will have more insights :)

Could somebody explain to me some thing regarding cake parties? Some questions I have are, what is over prep, and if the lfg-parties channel has a star and fruit emoji, does that mean they want all the ingredients to be star quality?

Overprep is when you include more participants by having them make ingredients not needed for the cakes (usually ground sweet leaf). Because anybody who participates in a minigame during a recipe gets a copy of the resulting food, that lets more people benefit from the party than will fit in the 18 required recipe steps.

About your second question, yes, usually it means (a) they're using apples (instead of blueberries) for the "any fruit" step (b) all fruit should be star quality. (Usually they don't require starred sweet leaf since that's difficult to gather in bulk, and all the other ingredients are store-bought iirc.)
