if you hit the tree just once and then someone else knocks it down, you still get the loot from it! so when people come to a grove they make sure to hit each tree once so that they get all the loot no matter who knocks it

That's left me unable to access the last flow gate as well as the large fan that blows towards the final island. I've even got a stupid number of ancient flow bugs because of the glitch

No, you were supposed to collect eggs etc. you need to go to other flow gates around the other islands, one is I think on the autumn looking biome - if not one on each of the two biomes left. You will get an NPC come through each gate and that should start their individual quest
