You use the repair bench and repair kits IF you repair it before it breaks and downgrades. If you wait until it fully breaks it goes to the lower tier and you have to craft the better tier to upgrade it again.

Teaming up with people definitely helps! I chose to upgrade my tools & such early on.

Cooking with someone else is a big help imo. You can either sell the food or use it for your focus. Pick everything you see. Hit everything you see. Haha
