Free Method

To host a server on your own computer, read the selfhosting guide.
This guide goes over how to install, create, and launch a free Minecraft server on all operating systems (MacOS, Linux and Windows). The guide also guides you through installing Java and optimizing your server for better performance.

If you are installing one of our older modpacks, ignore the "README" file that is included in the serverpack files, as they have outdated information.

Paid Method

We suggest renting a server from Bisect Hosting:
Approx. $10 - $25 a month depending on what plan you choose. You can also get 25% off with Code LunaPixel.

Go here and order a plan which fits you. We suggest 1GB per player but nothing lower than 4GB as the server needs at least 3GB to run.

Go to #server-hosting for more Info!

The following advice works for both the Free and Paid methods:

Transferring Your World

If you're playing Singleplayer and want to transfer your world to your server, simply go to your modpack files and navigate to the saves folder. Inside of this folder, you will see your world saves. Rename your desired world save to world. You can then transfer this folder to your server files. If your world was hosted via world sharing, this process has to be done by the person who would click "Share World".

Fixing Lag

To resolve lag issues, simply run the !tps command in #bots and follow the directions provided.

  3. Have you changed the modpack in any way except mods?

If this command was run in response to your question/issue, it is likely because switching away from the launcher you are currently using would fix your problem.
From our experience, the most stable launcher by far is ATLauncher, also known as ATL. Keep in mind that ATL is NOT related to TLauncher in any way, and is not a cracked launcher.

To install ATL, do the following:
1. Go to https://atlauncher.com/download. If you are on MacOS, then choose the "Jar" version under the "Other" tab.
2. Install and run the setup, then open the program.
3. Login to your Microsoft account that owns the Java Edition of Minecraft from the Accounts tab on the right. This process is 100% safe, as it goes directly through Microsoft. ATL doesn't see your account credentials.
4. Go to the Packs tab on the right, then click "Curseforge" on the left.
5. Search the modpack you wish to download.
6. Click "Install". Then, follow the on-screen directions.
7. Go to the Instances tab, and click "Play" on the modpack you downloaded. If you ever see an "Update" button on the instance, click it.
This video explains the process: https://youtu.be/xMYW1wMbmkM

To transfer your Curseforge world to ATL, simply right click the modpack on Curseforge, or click the 3 dots, then click "Open Folder". Copy the Saves folder, then click "Open Folder" on ATL and paste the Saves folder there. Do the same with the XaerosMinimap folder, or the Journeymap folder, to transfer over any waypoints you've created.
Because ATL downloads the exact same files as Curseforge does, your world will be the exact same and you will be able to join the same servers. ATL also works without an internet connection (after you've installed the modpack, of course), and does not have any bloat from Overwolf. You are free to uninstall both Overwolf and Curseforge with ATL installed.

Moon World Sharing servers are currently at capacity

If you're receiving the error "Connection refused: no further information" when trying to join a friend through "Start Co-op" or "Host World", it's likely that Luna's servers (used for world sharing) are currently full. We don't have a way to notify you when slots on our servers free up, but you are welcome to try again later.

We understand and recognise that this may be inconvenient, so we recommend in this case to host or rent your own server. For more information on hosting options, type !server.

The Essential mod is completely incompatible with all of our modpacks, and there's no reason to use it. All of our modpacks already come with built-in, free world hosting, by clicking the "Share World' button in the Open to LAN menu. You can learn more by typing !ws in the โ #bots channel. You can also run type !server in the same channel to learn how to properly host a server for better performance and more flexibility. In modpacks that aren't owned by us, you can use mods such as e4mc or WorldHost to host a server completely for free without Essential's many issues and crashes and the microtransactions that they constantly bother users with. To learn more about alternatives to the Essential mod, check out this website.

Do NOT Update Mods Manually!

Modpacks use specific versions of certain mods to prevent various issues, such as crashes or major game-breaking bugs. Mods will be updated by the modpack developer when they see fit. Please do not update the mods in a modpack manually, unless specifically told to do so.

To be clear; this is separate from updating the modpack (such as Better MC / Medieval MC / Prominence) itself. You should always stay up to date with the latest version of the modpack.

Luna Pixel's World Sharing

Our modpacks don't support any mods that add singleplayer hosting / world sharing because we already provide free world sharing. The 'Essential' mod is therefore incompatible.

To share your world using our own world hosting, click the 'Open to Lan' or 'Share World' button in the game menu when in a singleplayer world, and share the world.

It will give you an address, like magma-cube.mc.lunapixel.gg, which your friends can use to connect directly to your world as if it were a server!

We still highly suggest not to play through LAN as LAN is untested and unreliable. Using it will cause longterm damage to your world.

There is no reason to use LAN, as we support both paid and free methods of hosting a server the normal way.

Did you make the mod changes listed there?

dry thunder
#

No I just updated it like Curseforge told me too

torpid mortar
#

Updated what? The mods or the modpack itself?

#

Because you should not manually update mods

#

Also you have an added curios mod when the pack already has one

dry thunder
#

Idk I just hit update

#

Do I just remove that

torpid mortar
#

Reinstall the pack at this point tbh, back up any world you had made if you want to keep it

dry thunder
#

I cant even launch the game ๐Ÿ˜‚

torpid mortar
#

And don't hit update when it's just individual mods, you should only be using the change version button for the modpack itself

Dose BMC serverpack has server performance improve mods?

Please follow the guide here for changing the Java version your server uses. This will improve performance dramatically. If you are on a third party server host, you likely can not change the Java version your server uses. Bisect Hosting and a few VPS providers do allow changing Java version, though, which can usually be done through your server dashboard.

The method on Bisect is to simply go to the main dashboard page, and select "GraalVM 22" as the Java distribution. If it crashes, use 21 instead.

For further performance improvements, you can also follow this guide.

Reducing server render distance in the server.properties file is also a very good way of reducing lag. Most of our modpacks include mods like Bobby and Farsight, which make it so reducing server render distance will not affect players.

If lag persists, run the following command ingame:
/spark profiler start --only-ticks-over 50
Then, send the link in this channel.

You are free to uninstall both Overwolf and Curseforge with ATL installed.

fresh shadow
#

yeah but every time I tried using Modrinth to install this pack, it caused a lot of problems. Also the versions didn't always seem to matchup.

#

curse worked much better in my experience

#

plus then you don't have to do the manual installs that Modrinth requires

tame obsidian
#

well manual installs happen on any third party launcher lol but yes modrinth is a bit behind on versions

pearl flume
#

also modrinth keeps resetting ram allocation. which is really stupid to not fix

fresh shadow
#

yeah but then i have to use atlauncher xd

#

and that's weird, I haven't had any ram issues with modrinth

pearl flume
#

atlauncher has been the most stable across the board, and can install from both places

fresh shadow
#

Ik I've used it before

#

modrinth is just nicer for modifying the pack

pearl flume
#

atl is great for modifying packs as well?

#

It has add/edit mod buttons, clear information of when there's an update for the actual modpack

look I don't have anything against ATLauncher other than the fact that Modrinth is where all my other packs are already + it looks better

@maiden spire Sorry to ping you, but I could really use your insight. I suspect my issue might be related more to Ubuntu or the server environment than the modpack itself.

The Problem:
The server runs great overall, both me and my friend experience no lag, entities behave normally, and thereโ€™s no performance drop.

However, weโ€™re both now encountering a ghost block issue:

Breaking a block or interacting with doors/trapdoors works functionally we receive the drop or it opens.

But visually, the block or door remains "there" for 5โ€“10 seconds before disappearing.

No delay in mob interaction, no rubber-banding, no general lag.

What I've Tried / Diagnosed:
Server TPS is stable at 20.

Ping between server and client (main PC) is under 2ms consistently.

I switched Java from the default version to Java 21.

This issue only started after I moved the server from my Windows PC to a dedicated Ubuntu machine (both have same world/mod setup).

Even with just me on the server, the ghosting still happens.

It might be something with ubuntu network? I will like your help in further diagnosis/troubleshoot

does it happen with every single block, or is it from a specific mod?

does it happen anywhere in the minecraft world, or just in certain areas?

during the time that the phantom blocks is visible, can you interact with it/get blocked by it?

during the time the phantom blocks is visible, does the rest of the server lag? can you interact with and use chests, crafting tables, break other blocks

Me and 1 friend play it and we both experience phantom blocks.

Every block, it be dirt, stone, doors, trap doors, etc.

Anywhere in the minecraft world

we cant interact with it, and nor do we get blocked by it, we can go through it and even the border when you put crossaire on it appear with the real block and not phantom block

# maiden spire <@726509826557083680> would you have any idea why phantoms blocks are happening?

I think I solved the issue. It was my mistake.

After solving the java crash issue and fixing the RAM errors, I did not reinstalled the server and that might have corrupted a network config something. I totally forgot about that.

After reinstalling it, the issue seem to be fixed. Mostly there is no phantom blocks, sometimes there is the delay of 1sec but I will rather blame that for bad hardware.

sorry for disturbing you when the mistake was this obvious. thanks for the responses <3

So just downloaded (followed side instructions to add the extra mods and resources) Better MC through Modrinth and started playing. Looking to setup a server at some point and testing modpacks. Had a quick few questions:

  1. Is it normal for Xaero's to cut off part of the map you've explored? (Blue regions in screenshot)
  2. Has anyone else encountered this in Terrablender? (Red arrows and region)
  3. Is it normal for obsidian to have 2 different textures? If so, how many other blocks are like this?

I totally understand if you say I need to seek support from the independent mod creators for #1 and #2. But I have never encountered this issue with either of those 2 mods before and still currently do not in other modpacks I have setup, so figured I'd check to see if there was a known conflict someone came across.

Side note for #3, the texture for each block seems random depending on the coordinates.

Im going to make a server and would perfer not to use a launcher. Is this possible?

Well, if you want to make a server, you can download the serverpack from a place (like the Curseforge website).

Are you on Windows?

hazy sparrowBOT
#

An update to windows introduced a new security feature that prevents powershell files from running on your PC. This is great for your security, but not so great for our server start scripts, which require powershell to run them. Fortunately there is a quick fix for this!

Run powershell as administrator, then run Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned. Read the prompt and press accept. This will allow us to run scripts.

Next, navigate to your server directory using cd path/to/directory (for example: cd C:UsersUsernameDocumentsMinecraftServer)

You can now run the server by double-clicking the start.ps1 file, or typing .start.ps1 into the command line while in the directory.

IF THE ABOVE DOES NOT WORK, TRY THIS
Run the command Unblock-File -Path .start.ps1 in the same powershell window. This will allow the start script to not be blocked by windows, and run freely.

analog spoke
#

Might want to do this when you download a serverpack

mystic rivet
#

Oh ok. Very cool ty

To better assist with fixing your issue, we will need some logs:

  • Curseforge -> Right click the modpack instance -> Open Folder.

  • ATLauncher -> Click 'Open Folder' on the modpack instance.

  • MultiMC -> Select your instace and click 'Instance Folder' on the right.

  • ** For servers** -> Open the folder containing your server files.

To find the latest.log file, navigate to the 'logs' folder.
To find the hs_err_pid.log file, simply look for the file name after opening the instance folder.
To find a crash report, navigate to the 'crash-reports folder and find the most recent file after your crash occurred.
Once located, please upload the requested file here. If it fails, upload to https://mclo.gs/ and share the link here.

Hi, I wanted to start play Better mc but which should I play? BMC 4 or 5?

#

I saw 5 was neoforge tho

torpid mortar
#

5 has newer updates on mods and 1.21 features, but doesn't have as much content as 4 due to many mods not having updated to 1.21 yet

gentle hill

So BMC 3 is the Best one to choose?

torpid mortar

Where did 3 come from? ๐Ÿ˜ญ

theres not any best but BMC4 for forge and BMC2 for fabric are the ones with the most content and are actively maintaned/updated currently

4 and 5 are forge/neoforge, fabric only goes up to 3

gentle hill
#

Sorry

tame obsidian

bmc3 for fabric and bmc5 for neoforge are 1.21.1's, so newest verions, just less modded content due to mods not getting updated yet

We don't support Aternos nor can we assist you with using it for reasons listed below;

  1. You are unable to add / edit the mods to implement a fix that can be game changing at times.
  2. We are unable to control the updates of our packs on Aternos, nor ever will.
  3. The hosting is not strong enough to host our packs on there without it crashing every so often.
  4. We have other free methods that work much better than Aternos does. Run the !ws command and the !server command in #bots for more information on how to host a server for free.
