While I think it’s great that xbox owners can install mods it’s still limited. The truth is, it’s no contest - PC mods will always have a big advantage over closed systems.

There are advantages to each platform. PC has memory manipulation capability but this requires lots and lots of time and reverse engineering of the game executable. While console can’t compete directly w memory manipulation, modding on console brings out the creativity in modders.

The only advantage I see for Xbox owners is the ease of installing their mods vs PC owners where it can be a bit of a learning curve and perhaps a little time consuming. For me, I enjoy tinkering and the vast array of mods available for PC gaming. It’s all personal. 😉

If you mean skeleton as in the NPC model, I wouldn't count on that. Each game makes improvements and changes to those that aren't backward or forward compatible.

We won’t know until things come out. The Gamepass version for Skyrim and FO4 use the in game manager. I assume Starfield will have one as well if they do mod hosting for it on the Bethesda site. But we don’t know if they are going to host Starfield mods on the website

It's generally safe to assume a PC Game Pass version of a game is just like XB1 support. No script extender means you can only use regular mods. Which isn't a bad thing, that's easily 99% of what's out there anyway.

Making a game moddable requires providing users extensive access to game files and systems, which many devs don't like. It also requires extra work because you need to create modding tools for the game (usually by creating a more restricted and random-PC-friendly version of the actual dev tools that has no proprietary software and doesn't need a beefy workstation to run). Also allowing users to create their own content for free means there's less stuff that you can offer for sale as DLC/microtransaction since users will do more of it and better for free, unless you leverage the few things that you have and users don't (like access to the source code of the game letting you add or edit game systems in DLC on a deeper level than most mods).

On the other hand, modding support done right greatly extends the game's life since people can just install mods when they start to grow tired of the vanilla game and keep playing, and you also get plenty of users which only buy the games precisely because they are moddable and wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Although to be fair the last "downside" I listed there may not actually apply unless you're EA-tier greedy and ruthless in your pursue of every single penny, because plenty of people seem to be fine with paying for Creation Club content either because they have no other choice (Playstation, and Xbox to a lesser extent) or just don't want to use mods altogether despite being on PC (which... to each their own, I guess). All of this while there's indeed mods that arguably do the same as CC files or better and for free.

Just ask yourself this: "would people continue to buy Skyrim by the boatload more than a decade after its original 2011 release if it wasn't moddable to the extent it is?".

That's your answer.

Fallout 4 and Skyrim are both available for next gen console and both have mods on nex gen consoles. Games prior to Fallout 4 release are currently PC-only modding. As this is the general modding, you’ll need to specify which game you’re inquiring about.

We love modding at BGS, and we also make games particularly suited to modding.

It’s simpler to add mod support to a single-player game.

It’s easier to access new content in a game which is open-ended (or level based).

There’s more room for gameplay adjustments in a game with freeform gameplay over one which is highly tuned to a particular experience.

There’s more benefit to mod support when you have a large, diverse audience.

There are exceptions to all of these. Plenty of multiplayer games with modding, and niche indie titles with level editors. But, I do think there’s a back-and-forth between us loving modding and us making games that work well for modding.

Rimworld is a good example, it is expensive and easy to pirate, but modding is inconvenient when you have options like the steam workshop taken from you, and it probably takes some technical know how beyond most people at least to get these mods working on a pirated copy

Also most pirates just play on whatever version of the game first gets cracked, mods generally are made for the most recent version and are updated so that also makes it a pain in the ass

I think a lot of it has to do with origins of the company and stuff though. It is just kind of taboo to let your players see behind the curtain for most devs. Fighting games still dont let you see the hitboxes in game in 2023 and thats like competitive games where that stuff really matters. It is a risk as well and game publishers are massive ships that take a long time to turn and they dont have any incentive to sign off on that risk.

I recommend Seddon4494 and Kinggath YouTube videos for F4, Darkfox127 for Skyrim (and it also mostly applies to F4 as well). If you can't find good stuff for F4 look up the same topic for Skyrim and that'll get you 99% of what you need. Assume that 80-90% of Fallout 4 topics will also apply in Starfield if you're trying to get a jump on learning to mod for Starfield. Starfield will build on what capabilities F4 already has, most likely a similar jump as going from Skyrim to F4 modding was.

Hello everybody! I am hoping to learn how to mod Bethesda games like Starfield which I will own on Xbox series s and pc via gamepass I did buy the upgrade to get earlier access. I am a complete newbie to modding however and really have no idea where to start or what programming language to learn. I have tinkered as a hobby solo indie dev for last few years but I never published anything I just tinker in no code engines like dreams on PlayStation, gameguru on pc, and so on. I decided that I am maybe not cut out to make a full game as I am by myself in country with cerebral palsy and such but I can get a very real taste of game dev world by making mods and possibly in future join a group of modders for big project

I've been making mods for over 6 years and I can't script my way out of a paper bag but it definitely limits me and I've had to call on scripter friends to write stuff for me on more than one occasion.

Effectively the same restrictions as on console AFAIK, with the nitpick that you might also be able to use mods from Nexus (or anything that doesn't go through Beth.Net/the ingame mod manager) as long as they don't require Script Extender or any other mod/framework that messes with the game code on runtime.

But I'm not sure if that last part still applies because I seem to recall people having issues getting the games to actually load those non-BethNet mods' files.

Stuff like potential DLSS mods that could become available? I have GamePass and I just need to buy the upgrade, but I wanna be able to have no limitations when it comes to modding for the game + I have the money on steam wallet cause I sold some CS skins. So I'm debating just going that route actually.

It will be more expensive, but atleast I'll have it for longer + I'm just using from my Steam Wallet, where I have an amount that I have no idea how I will be able to use 😄

Adding DLSS support through mods would require injecting that code into the game executable on runtime, so that's 99.9999% guaranteed "nope" for the GamePass version.

If you want no limitations on modding you need the Steam version, no question there.

Depending on what you need. If you just have "how do I" questions, you can do the Fallout 4 mods channels here, or make a post on the fallout 4 section of the nexusmods.com forums, where most of the modders hang out. Be patient and, if someone knows how to help you, they will.

Most likely yes unless you have whatever 3d modeling program Bethesda used and that may be tricky since they tend to use older software which Autodesk at least is unwilling to provide. With time community tools will develop to do probably everything that doesn't require Havok in Blender. Hopefully there will be an official plugin for Havok related content like there is for Fallout 4.

Mod idea for Starfield: each planet is split up into a grid and you can only place one landing spot in each tile but each tile has a set seed that is persistent so you can visit the same area again and the terrain will always be the same no matter what. This could make exploration much more immersive and possibly allow on foot travel across the planet

You come up with an idea and add it to the game using official tools.

Then enable it with a manager. Skyrim SE and Fallout 4 ship with an in-game manager so it's fairly simple to add mods you've made to your game.

There are also third-party tools but many are still being decoded and reversed engineered even after all this time. Third-party tools are updated as new things are discovered.

I doubt anything has been created mod-wise. The only people who have played the game are content creators and others who got the game to review it I think.

I can't speak officially for Bethesda and I very seriously doubt that any official Bethesda representative will make a statement about this on record at all. So I'll answer you with what has been the history of modding with Bethesda up to this point (which may potentially change due to being purchased by Microsoft since the last game release). To date Bethesda has turned a blind eye to people decompiling all asset files including script files prior to the release of the CK. To date Bethesda has turned a blind eye to people decompiling the game engine itself for the purpose of making script extender mods (and in fact has supported some SE work in the past). So I wouldn't worry about decompiling the scripts ahead of time. The Bethesda Archive Extractor folks are already working furiously on being able to extract asset files and a partially functional BAE is already out. I'm sure all the other community tool devs are also working like mad to decompile their own piece of the Bethesda modding pie as well, it just takes a little time.

Just uploaded an actual achievement enabler, this one removes all "Modded" flags on your save every auto/manual save instead.
Unlike the one available on nexus atm, this one works even after .dll removed (so updates wont brick your save) and can restore a modded save back to vanilla

True, I wish there would be a mod that adds gamma/brightness sliders into the game options (should be possible? I don't know the limits of the Creation Engine). That would be helpful. Seems a lot of settings are already in Ini files, but for every change you need to restart the game, not so great.

My current issue in fo4 modded is the game keeps crashing. It first started happening after I tried the detector shades mod which sparked the entire issue (still playtesting to weed out whether that mod is the culprit or not) it started freezing my game while targeting hud was active and once I resolved this issue (that is prevalent in all the targeting hud mods I've tried since detector shades one so don't know if it caused it or if it's a common big) the game began crashing eat periodic intervals
First it was every minute then after some load order handling it is now crashing every 10 min ish but still annoying and preventative to my success
I've got a total of under 50 mb of mods active on PS4/5 and have them all placed in the recommended order

I liked the traits in Fallout: New Vegas as they reminded me of Fallout 1 & 2...

i tried it myself, first i increased the console history buffer in starfieldcustom.ini

Then i ran game, open console with ~ key and typed "ShowGlobalVars" or "SGLV" .. i tried outputting / dumping the results into a file using SCOF command but that didnt work. the guy from the link did it differently, he seemed to have extracted it from the starfield.exe itself and then ran in the console getini "setting:section" for the default values on all the variables. i'm not a coder myself so my knowledge is limited in that regard.

I am not a modder, but one QoL mod I want to have is a teleportation device built into the storage closet in your room in the Lodge. I want access to that storage when building off world bases. Baldur’s Gate 3 has this with a send to camp button and ability to go to camp any time to grab whatever you need. Starfield needs this ability desperately.

whoever is paywalling mods is not only a jerk, they're violating the usual EULA for creating mods (based on all the games to this point) and I don't expect Bethesda to suddenly allow charging for mods with Starfield outside of perhaps their own marketplace. There's a difference between noticing and conceiously processing. You can absolutely notice above 60fps. Your brain however doesn't consciously process it, heck it likely won't even process more than 30 - you don't consciously process every frame, whether it's a screen or not, your brain fills in the gaps which is how interpreting motion works.
What matters though is you do consciously process the difference. Your brain will notice a bigger difference the more fps their is. People like 120hz monitors not because they can see 120fps, they can't. They like it because they can still notice the improvement. Science!

Makes the most sense too. Workshop is fine but it was never the main way to get mods, most people used Nexus and still do.
So makes sense they'd drop Workshop and decide to make their own mod platform with their games and community in mind.

they needed an alternative to workshop for xbox/ps and to maximise the mod population it needs to serve PC too.
but many mods (read: script extenders/nsfw etc) cant use that anyway so nexus and others in the PC ecosystem were always going to thrive, along with better tools/features like collections, wabbajack, etc

Mod idea 1: Outpost top-down view allowing for habs to be viewed without a roof from the top down for better decorating.

Mod idea 2: Ship interior previewer with the ability to choose where the ladders and doors are placed.

What's the steps to re-archiving a ba2?
I unpacked a ba2, changed a texture and repacked as a new archive with just the new files. This file overwrites the old one entirely when I install it though, understandably.
I was hoping to not have my users download a whole ba2 filled with textures they already have, just to get my one change

Their CK has tie-ins to 3rd party proprietary software they are not licensed to give away, also their internal test servers and etc. They need time to disconnect that stuff and make sure it still works after they give it a lobotomy, I mean fix it up.

There's no OS, there's no Nifskope, there's no Xedit, there's no export software for AFX animations, there's no CK for basic mod making.

For all purposes, actual "mods" are not going to be made just yet due to the lack of tools used to make them.

Warfighter does appear to be using a much tighter definition than most. But then, a lot of folks don't consider INI tweaks to be mods either, whereas plenty do. There's nothing wrong with viewing the term "mod" a bit differently, as long as you recognize it isn't uniform, or try to impose.

Limiting mods to those personal tweaks that include a plug-in seems reasonable enough, although it's more limiting than how I personally view it.

Meshes, textures, materials, sounds, animations, scripts, there's a lot more that goes into modding than what's currently enabled, just because you can replace a texture in a game file doesn't mean that there's mod support for the game. There is a lack of official tools and unofficial ones too while at it but the game is moddable in my eyes nonetheless. 🤷‍♂️
And ye, slapping textures here and there doesn't require much in itself. I guess the brunt of that is making the textures that you slap in there that irritates me to "not be considered a mod".

Flipping textures around is modding, its not large or perhaps complex modding as scripting or adding new things. But it is modding. It's a modification of the base asset, hence its modding.

Current tools are not available for anything larger, and the current .esp/.esm files around are hex editing which is fine as long as the person is confident and knows what hex they're editing. Regardless, modding would be a lot easier if Bethesda just relased the CK2 Tools at launch, instead of probably 6months later like with Fallout 4. 02Shrug

Hey guys, so.... once the mod creation tools gets launched I am thinking about working on a mod that allows people to place all sorts of clutter more efficiently and lock them in place, in Starfield. (If possible!)

I am writing this post for 2 reasons, 1 I want other Modders to think about this too and perhaps someone might create a better alternative than mine. (Basically sharing the idea..) and 2. I want to know if the community even wants this.

I am planning to launch the mod on PC and then port it to Xbox asap!

It's been too long since I played with Place Everywhere so I do not know if the functionality is in it but Place Anywhere allows for locking into place. However, due to how Havok physics work, upon cell reload, when objects settle, they drop below where they are placed. This can be countered by reloading the cell to fully lock the object. (At least on Xbox.) The object will return to the original location on second load of the cell.

I do not know if it's possible to look at papyrus scripting yet, I'm avoiding looking at the game files to avoid spoilers, but if it is possible, look for a script named something like disablehavokonload and that might tell you what you need to do for such things.

Fallout 4 has DefaultDisableHavokOnLoad and DefaultAliasDisableHavokOnLoad. If you cannot access Starfield's scripts yet, you can have a look at Fallout 4 or Skyrim. Skyrim also has DefaultDisableHavokOnLoad. Just keep in mind as you're studying them that the physics work a bit differently between games where friction and tensors and a couple other elements work.

As an aside, you would not be able to use the script extender for Xbox/Game Pass PC support and you may want to reach out to Registrator2000 for guidance. Place Anywhere on Xbox is both scripting and UI/AS3 edits.

full on multiplayer mod would require taking a ton of code to do with players and ships and everything and making it so the game can handle multiple player-controlled ships/characters at once and sending the data between clients, will definitely take a long while

I wonder if it's possible to redo the NAT train system in New Atlantis. Something like The Ascent would be nice, where you have to wait a short amount of time for the train and the loading screen is replaced with your character on the inside of the train like in the Ascent. It itself eats basically everything that’s smaller then itself including other mantis.

Gordian worms are some parasites they can get.

Though I don’t think just taking an animal counterpart would work just right.

At least one body mod author I know is waiting for proper tools to extract mesh files. Currently the only option is to extract to obj via a command line interface and I don't know if meshes can even be converted back to the type Starfield uses yet. This is still very early in modding days, it takes time for the community tools as well as the official tools to be made available to mod authors
