I can't speak for this game as I haven't seen any cosmetics, but I generally find this to be false for myself. Most paid cosmetics are super over the top fits with glowy parts or flashing parts, and I'm more of a casual outfit enjoyer. So I tend to prefer the cheaper/free items

Do you know why the team wanted it to be a F2P game on 5 platforms at launch (with a mobile version coming later)?

To remove barriers of entry.
To expand the love of skateboarding and skateboarding games. Because not everyone can throw down $60-70 a pop for a game, but a free game and on multiple platforms with cross play and cross progression, that’s a win.

And the vision is to keep this game around for a long time, with ongoing development, additions, and support.

No gameplay areas locked behind a paywall, so if you don’t have a map pack you can’t play with your friends. No splitting the community up. No paying for advanced features (like the Filmer pack).

And the cosmetics, optional. Plenty of dope stuff to unlock just by playing.

Most importantly - don’t take my word for it. When Early Access drops, give it a try, give it a chance. It may not be for you, it may.

It doesn't take a lot for a battlepass like progress system to not feel super tacked on.

my personal gameplay loop of Skate was going around the map and parks, finding things to skate, lines to shred, stuff to flip over, and recording it all with the replay editor,,, the missions weren't a focus too much for me,,, they were seperate to my main enjoyment of the game

There's a big disconnect here because new players and different players is different. New players can be anyone, CSGO switched to free to play to attract new players and they didn't switch artstyle because F2P itself brings in new player.
