I've been watching this development since last august and never read anyone from the team saying it would come out last year. Ppl speculating yes (as always) but no such promises from the team. There was talk about alpha perhaps coming last year, but there's a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way from alpha to release, especially for AAA games.
I think we all want the game to come out sooner than later, but I'd rather wait for a good game than get an unfinished one soon. 🙂

That being said, they will 100% have people at Microsoft who are working full time in their own 'web 3' roles. I think the companies have learned to actually look into these things a bit more in comparison to the past, where they were quick to shut things down and not innovate

I think it will be at a slow pace though and it won't be until blockchain related products/services really start to pick up traction, where then they might finally want to double down on it at full throttle

I'm seeing them put all the pieces in place. Concensys + Blizz/Acti IP/devs seems like 80-90% of what's needed to start making blockchain integrated games for the masses.

The thing that concerns me the most is that brand recognition carries so much weight with most gamers. Blizz has (IMO) made some pretty mediocre games in the past decade (talking depth-wise, they are all buttery smooth to play), but people continue to jump into their games headfirst, whether it's for nostalgia or convenience (easier to jump into a game you know vs. a game you don't know).

I think right now they are the main threat for the coming 3-5 years for any "small" gamefi studio.

Yeah getting into the market ASAP and establishing market share, generating revenue to further build out your IP & games etc is crucial. Obviously while taking into account actually delivering something good though (I rather ILV launch in one big swoop in 2023 and not do small releases one by one)

It's a matter of time before they start coming in. I think the games already in development now though are early enough which is the main thing

IP's now that thrive though will remain even when the big dogs come in, theyll get huge publicity across the world

Like how axie gets all the PR and eyes in the crypto space, except if a game goes mainstream, that first mover effect is amplified by global media

I think you're right about that, I don't see Microsoft making it to market first, but I think they'll get there sooner than I originally expected. Whether they have a product that provides a reason to be web3 remains to be seen as well, I think lots of web3 games could easily be web2 games, and are just appealing to novelty by being web3.
