Maybe. This is not a free to earn game because such an economy would be unsustainable. At launch even the free Tier 0 materials / Illuvials might have value on the marketplace because everyone starts with nothing and some might be willing to pay to get ahead. Over time though, those T0 won't be much worth any more most likely and you will have to pay some fees to get into the play2earn part. A lot less than in some other games though.

BUT, while the game will be free to play, in order to participate in the earning part of the economy a bit of money needs to be invested (not even close to entry fees in some other games though). Early on you might even be able to get to the paid regions just by grinding the free Tier 0 stuff because some people will pay for it on the marketplace to get ahead.

IRRC, founder said in one interview that the game is free to play. Everyone will start together at day one of the game. free to play player will be able to play to game if they want and if they grind hard enough they will able to have potential account also. Paid user may be have a bit advantage (e.g. can have higher tier of item need for capture rare creature).

Also, they say that if player contribute at the early stage of the game they have a chance to find rare monster than player who come later since early generation monster will come at the game start and may not there anymore when the game progress.

However, the economic sustainability may come from different approach, for example travel fee go to reward pool of the game for ppl to earn, etc. Balancing free to play and play to earn is not easy but possible. I believe that the team will shape it out carefully when the game come out since they have 95+ people in the team right now.

Also gameplay wise, if I recall correctly, when going into the auto battler you cannot just spam the board with stage 3's.
imagine having 100 points (Random number) to fill the board, and each illuvial cost a certain amount of points each time you add one to the board, and stage 3's are more expensive than stage 1's, so stage 1's could be quite valuable gameplay wise as well.

Just going off memory from what I've read in chat before, so take it with a grain of salt, but I believe that will be close to how you set your board, a sort of point system
