Here's my honest beginner's feedback after just trying the game:
Pros:
Music and ambiance is amazing. Feels like a world I can get lost in. Really wish it was an MMO. The tutorial guy's voice acting was also nice. Movement is fluid. The Illuvial hunting mechanism is great and feels rewarding. Holds you to the edge of your seat from the encounter to the catch. Well designed tutorial too. Illuvials in OW is a big win. Game performance and optimization is pretty good. Ran quite well on my primitive rig.
Cons:
That first jump while running feels janky. I hold space and it takes a while to get off the ground. I tap space and my character barely taps off the ground. Might need some getting used to. Story and quests still missing, so the world still feels pretty empty. Didn't really understand the point of the heatmap. Didn't feel like the tutorial explained it well enough. How do I know what materials are needed for crafting what? Am I supposed to note all of it down when I travel back to Sanctum Mesa? Also didn't the stealth mode make it into this release? Illuvials start running away as soon as I start approaching them.

Overall I see huge improvement. Just some more polish and this can be an amazing and addictive product.

I agree, it is impossible to catch up with some illuvials, and some stand still and do not move in the water.

The heat map shows you where the greatest density of loot is, so if you are in the red part you have a better chance of finding more materials and illuvials to mine and catch
