You are playing a beta, the purpose of a beta is to test the core gameplay loop and to provide feedback to the developer.

No other beta provides persistent rewards to players. Can you imagine a game like Destiny letting beta players keep their level and gear from beta in the open release - no.

What you get from the beta is cosmetics and experience which will already give you a leg up on new players

You also need to consider that letting players with lvl 500 plots jump straight into open release would destroy the economy levers we've put into place

but I really liked the Gods Unchained approach with tournaments - where you get a reward based on how well you played. The problem is that they also catered to the masses by giving everyone some rewards, basically a participation trophy. This led to an influx of simple bots that would just lose on purpose to in effect "farm" the rewards from playing. If they kept it capped on the top and only rewarded the top players, they would have avoided this. @plain delta

The Arena will initially be the main way to play with your illuvials and such. So it could be classified as "the main game".

You get fuel in the base building game, you go on expeditions in the overworld similar to how you would open pokemon cards. You pay money to go on an expedition and find a set amount of illuvials. After that, you would go to the arena where you would be playing with your illuvials that you gained in the overworld. (ofcourse the illuvials help you when catching stronger illuvials in expeditions)

Illuvium is a studio however, and they have leaked intentions of creating a dungeon crawler, FPS, battle royale type of games and racers and more. so you will probably be able to use those assets in multiple games down the line.

I think the game is loads of fun and have a hard time pulling myself away from it. So I'd say that the point of the F2P game would be like most games; to have fun.
I'm guessing there will be leaderboards and such when it's done though. This is very early alpha and lots of stuff will likely happen before release.
