took me about 6 hours of total work to do the first one, some 8 and a bit hours for the second, and I'm currently 4 hours into the third one.

I've still got to draw the hexagonal pommel out, then get the vice out and lay the wand in at the angle I want and then file it down

so another 2 hours worth of work with doing that and then sanding it

Thank you. They are a lot of work taking some 6-8 hours each, though I'm actually hoping to make them more complex in the future.

For example I'm learning how to whittle little animals, and I was thinking I might see if I can adapt said carvings to work for the pommel of a wand or a sword. If I can then that'd be awesome though I've yet to try it so here's to hoping I don't make a mess of it but it's not too big of a loss if I do.

I once made little dolphin for a friend. But i wonder, do you carve with hand and knife (like those swizers) or do you have something else? I carve by hand, but yours look so perfect

Knife and files and sandpaper, that's all I've got.

So far I've spent around £60 in total on tools (£20 roughly) and materials (around £40 on wood) for getting into woodworking/wandmaking which I don't think is too much really.

I've been asked if I'll get a lathe but that's a massive investment for something I've only been doing for a bit over a month, and it's like what if I spent £500 on a lathe and then after making 3 wands decided I didn't want to do it anymore, well then I'm down half a grand for something I'm no longer doing. So yeah stuck with a knife and files and sandpaper.

Most of my work consists of smudge and blur tool though. Specifically the greyscale ones.

ooh, I've just searched through messages for the word "ash" to see if anyone with an ash wand has talked about their wand length, and I have come across some messages in the lore channel of me talking about runes

the reason why is there is a rune that technically is more for "tree" but specifically means "ash tree"

So I'll see about carving that into the wand I think

So that is 9 inches of beechwood, 11 inches of ash, and 12 inches of tulipwood ready for shaping as the next 3 wands that I'll make.

The beech will be done in a fairly simple design as damn does it just seem tiny.

Of the picture with the wands I've made so far in it, the 1st one is on the left of that group, the 2nd in the middle, and the 3rd on the right.

I know the 3rd doesn't look as complex as the 2nd, but A) not all wands are, and B) that's cos the complex bit is making the pommel either hexagonal or octagonal.

I don't think so. I originally had no plans to use any form of stone but then when I was making the 2nd wand, I commissioned Lily, wandmaker to wandmaker, to design and draw what she thought my wand would look like and she used rainforest marble to cover the grip, and I was like "ooh I like that" and so immediately went to look up how to get some, and luckily they sell sort of like test strips of really thin marble and I thought to myself "that's perfect, if I could cut it, then I'd be able to use it on a hexagonal or octagonal grip for my own wand" gluing it to the grip of course.

So no plans for gems or crystals, but maybe plans for some types of marble if I can get small sections of it and figure out how to cut it without damaging it.

So I finished my wands in boiled linseed oil, or I will do for the 2nd one at some point, I'm just lazy and haven't gotten around to it.

I chose that because it's a fairly natural wood stain, only darkening the wood a bit but helping waterproof it and protect it against natural wear and tear from being in a hand a lot. Also it doesn't smell as bad as Danish oil, though the end result of the two is basically the same.

But also that's why I've gotten different woods, no need to apply a "cherry" dye/wood stain if I've got actual cherry wood (which I do)

try make the gradient look less angry

My suggestion would be to have the gradient be done over an S curve rather than a line.
The main problem is that the last letters for the top word and the first 3 letters for the bottom one are already on the gradient towards the colour they're written in, and so become less legible.

It that makes sense.

Ah back to putting down more story ideas for HP fan fic.

my ideas document is now 25 A4 pages long, though that's cos I've written a few hundred words for some ideas

15 different ideas in total.

I wonder if anyone can guess at what the stories are about from their names.

Some are super obvious, others less so

Some ideas I really want to turn into a full story, I just don't actually have a plan for a full story for any of them, hence why they are all just ideas for now.

So I decided to work on making the beech wand today

let me tell you, it is not an easy to work material

but with a mixture of rough files, a wood planer, and sandpaper, I've managed to get it down to a wand-ish shape

also there is the problem that with it being 9 inches long it's more difficult to stick in the vice and work on

Honestly I think I'm going to be glad when I move onto either the ash or the tulipwood

after that I think I'm going to be a bit of a nuissance and ask people if they have either an; ash, cherry, maple, oak, or pine wand and what the length of it is, that way I can get experience making more wands of different lengths.

I'm saving the piece of walnut that I have cos well the wood looks super nice and I want that to be great

There's a reason why I was using the files and a wood planer, I tried whittling it with my knife and I've got a good knife for whittling and yet it could barely get through the wood.

Cherry wood is quite a nice colour. (The tulipwood dowel is there cos it's cut to 12" already so I can use it to show the length)

And is actually decently bendy in comparison to some of the other woods that I have.

Nice. Um I did some reading. Beechwood dowel is hard to carve due to the grain going every which way….

The group forum on the site I looked up says may be easier to start with an obvious block but by that logic you’d almost definitely need a lathe and so much wasted wood….

🤷🏻‍♂️. Just last time I did wood work I made a mug tree. Was a very soft wood considering it’s pine only other wood work projects I’ve done have been boxes effectively. And by that I mean square designs aus h as my bookcase and wardrobe. Both of which are marine ply and stained ebony.

Bookcase is fun. Acts as a hidden door to the attic storage space.

A true quill pen uses the natural hallow property of the feather but cut in such a way that it can be used for writing. They’re very delicate.

My mum used to take feathers we found and cut them at a really weird angle and I would dip them in paint to write with as a small child. Not being able to afford ink. Living in the highlands we had a lot of birds of prey around and so occasionally we found their feathers. Osprey, eagle, owl and when we couldn’t find those seagull had to suffice. I wish I still had a photo of them all.

I am EXTREMELY picky about accuracy.

I went so far as to count the buttons on Snape’s full costume.

My Slytherin costume was as accurate as I could make it minus shoes. I wore black running/walking shoes because I was going to be walking around all day at the park I didn’t want to kill my feet.

I bought the sweaters from the actual company that designed and made the sweaters for the movies.

Got my tie from them too because the one from Universal was actual silk and insanely shiny. The polyester looked better.

Pants and white shirt were not completely accurate. The shirt should have been an off-white button-up shirt but I couldn’t find one so I went with regular white. Pants were black, fairly nice looking but were not dress pants. Again went for comfort on that.

Overall though it looked fantastic.

I was stopped nine times at Universal because people thought I worked there.

I've not published any HP fan fics yet.

I have a massive one that's almost 18K words which if you'd believe it is around a 5th of the way done at that length.

And then I have a document that is just a series of ideas that I sometimes write for, though I feel I might need to split them up as a couple of them are getting long enough that they should be in their own document.

As for Grindelwald, well I'm writing my story cos the political upheaval he'd be causing in Europe in the late 1920s and into the 1930s would be immense, especially with that happens in Secrets of Dumbledore.

I'd love to get something done enough to publish but alas I'm a dumb dumb and rarely seem to write short form stories, so I've got to put down thousands upon thousands of words before I get close to publishable material

my main Star Wars fic is almost 11K words long, and that's just 5 chapters

Yeah I definitely enjoy writing a lot. I got into it back in April 2020 cos I was struggling creatively to make games, so decided writing would work as a way to get creative again.

It's helped a lot and now I try (though often fail) to write around 5000 words across all stories each month as I can easily do such a thing as shown by the almost 2000 words written today so far (and I've only been at it since around 7am my time, so 6 hours ago)

As for publishing, I have 2 stories already up on AO3, which is where I aim to put all my fan fiction when I get it to a state worth publishing.

As for original stories, well honestly I'm trying to write stuff but it's more difficult than you'd think

Whilst tulipwood is a dense wood, it's rather soft, and the first time I put it in the vice to use a rasp to shave it down, I didn't cover it, and so I now have dents in the wood

luckily it's not unrecoverable and if tomorrow is dry then I'll try to finish it off then

Pommel
Grip
Guard
Shaft
Tip

Mostly cos those names fit, and there's not actually a canon naming convention for it. So as I make them I thought why not name the parts.

Technically beyond the grip, shaft, and tip, all other parts are optional so if you don't want a pommel then you don't have to give one to a wand, sometimes you'll just go without a guard so the grip bleeds right into the wand shaft without any form of border or separation.

it's basically a "what looks cool" type thing as well as what works for the length of the wand

for example the beech wand I've made is 9" long, which is equal the length of the wand shaft on the wands I've made for myself, so I couldn't really do much design work on it.

I managed to find a company which sells a variety of wooden dowels in the UK, but I also do look for good wood cuttings if I can.

I've been meaning to cut the holly bush out of my hedge so that I can have some of that.

The problem is getting most wood, they either sell it as timber or as wood blanks which are meant to be turned down on a lathe.

So getting stuff that I want like alder, and cedar, that's been a pain.

answers for the future;

Make greater use of the wood planer, either that or buy a spoke shave.
Secondly wrap the wood before putting it in the table vice to avoid denting it.
