I've been playing for a very short time and I don't understand much.

both are approximately equally good for arena and campaign, but it’s best to decide which troop type you’re going to specialise in (fighter, shooter, or rider) and that will help you decide between the two.

the game tends to push you towards fighters to start with, but specialising in riders and shooters each have their perks as well

You have to choose which of those you like to focus on, as its important to decide early to not use items wrong to regret later. Most players go for riders as it get said heroes are easiest to level, but also means shooter is a good to annoy.
Riders have the fastest movement speed, so they move way faster as shooter or fighter and they can easier kill zombie lairs.
Fighter have it easier in Ruins (at least thats what get said)
Shooters often has it easier in nuka or pit, as a lot players go for rider

Economy heroes are pretty useful, as their passive stats helps you in different ways, e.g. McCarty reduces the costs of stamina for lairs, vavara lady m and some others increases your troop sizes. Also some of those are good in match-3

Low tier economy heroes provide passive boosts to other things, so while not as good for attacking, they provide other benefits. Read through all the heroes ahd their hero / troop abilities

no but it does affect gathering load. A higher tier troop will be able to hold more before returning home. So you'd need less troops of a higher tier to collect a tile. Alternatively, higher tier troops would mean you'd be able to stay in the alliance mill for longer (assuming it doesn't run out)

seems might have been some time though so reseach / nova / hero differences might have added up

I think this is the answer. If I send my t11 riders to the mill they do gather a smidge faster but it's hard to an accurate time since each mill generally lasts about a day

The mill gathering speed is too variable depending on how many are in there and what each individual's gathering speed is, whether state and alliance gathering is on, whether individual gathering boost is activated, etc.
I have some gathering boosts gotten as rewards in early days events which aren't available now, Nova is higher, researched more, etc.
I it's been a while since I looked at the gathering time, but my gas gathering speed should be between 50-55 minutes for a level 6
