Istg they better not take too long putting out more episodes. The whole thing so far feels like a pilot instead of a whole season. So much content packed into 6 episodes and so much potential to expand the story.

Just finished the show last night. Honestly, really disappointed in it. It feels like a piece of Ark fan fiction written by a teenager with a crush on Mei Yin. Helena is written like a Mary Sue self-insert. Rockwell's character development is nonexistent. The other characters feel like tropes, and there's no time to connect with them...because the pacing is, erm, awful. And inconsistent. There's no real suspense, no build-up, and the sense of awe players experience in-game when encountering the dinos is completely absent. The show doesn't need to be identical to the game, but somehow everything about this feels cheap. They're saying "trust the process", but that feels like basically an admission that they know they messed up and they're now trying to fix it 🤷‍♀️

Sure, the OG Mary-Sues are always amazing fighters, but newer ones are a little more nuanced usually...Helena is immediately amazing at literally except combat...oh, wait, she's also taking advanced shots at moving targets with a bow within the first couple of episodes, and in episode 5 has a training montage that has her showing massive improvements inside the space of less than a week...pretty unusually amazing tbh

the archery thing too is actually not SUPER far off. I do a bit of archery myself and it isn’t super hard to learn. An eye shot against a bird? yeah that’s probably not happening, but i was fine with it. the biggest thing they got wrong with archery is the same thing everyone else gets wrong about it: archery is actually a strength based skill and not an ability one. those draw weights get ridiculous.

archery has very little to do with your dexterity, unless you count dexterity as being able to aim. but bows themselves do require a good bit of strength to confidently use. of course the draw weight depends on the bow but those old wooden bows are gonna have some pretty bad ones

i wouldn’t even say she becomes very good at melee combat. she wasn’t ANYWHERE near mei-yin or nerva’s level. her whole role in that fight was keeping the pressure off mei-yin. if she was really good at sword combat, nerva would’ve been dust

yes, helena’s progression is unrealistic. but this a show where dead people from all different time periods learn how to ride dinosaurs and shoot futuristic guns

if your biggest problem is that the mc learns combat too fast, id say that’s a positive on the show that the rest is believable

That doesn't really address my point. I think you're trying to argue that she isn't a Mary-Sue, but from all those facts, she really is. The fact that she's fighting at all is completely against cannon, so to have her not only fighting, but also doing so at a level that allows her to beat Nerva's troops...they have training, presumably daily from what we see in the scenes in his camp. Helena arrives, with no experience of tactics, or really anything physical it seems, and she's suddenly got the reflexes and strength to do things that others have spent their whole lives building up to...no way. They should have kept her as the nerdy scientist instead of trying to make her into River Tam

I think it's fantastic. On the 7th watch. There are very few shows that actually try to be serious, and can execute it as such without insulting fake characters and dumb humor.

One rex doesn't make her a beast queen, in the lore she was the beast queen because she had a whole army of dinosaurs and lived alone with them.

Also note: While she was called the beast queen beforehand. Taming the Giga emphasized it more, as at the time, she was the only one to do so.
So for them to allow Nerva to have a Giga before Mei kind of defeats the purpose. (and ironically makes Nerva more of the beast master.)

Literally just finished the show - would give it a solid 8-9/10 for what many ark fans would want to see from the franchise.

Having played ASE since initial early access and loving it for many years (PvE and PvP), then later the mess that is ASA... its good to see Wildcard is still genuinely capable of making quality entertainment.

The animated series (while not perfect) gave the impression of the love of the source material being built into it (like during early access ASE, it wasn't perfect but those that worked on it cared about it and it showed). I'm entirely lost as to why its so hard to do the same with the games nowadays.

Overall though, rekindled some of my faith in WC. Looking forward to see what they do next (both for the series and maybe even the games).

Watched it and honestly one thing that struck out to me as a negative was how Rockwell was portrayed, based on the explorer notes he’s supposed to have a fair amount of decency initially, only working for oppressive powers for funding and resources, even befriending Helena, he only begins going full mad scientist in aberration

Meanwhile in the show his first appearance is literally in a background of flames surrounded by death and carnage, then 5 minutes later shows blatant animal abuse

They really didn’t go subtle with making him the bad guy which was a missed opportunity that the explorer notes showed

Aside from that I really liked the show, even if the megalania galloping animation was hard to watch

That’s the character ark that they defined as “reversed”, so I don’t know if we’re to expect some kind of redemption or pacification or what but so far, with only half of season one available, it is a bit disappointing that they went that route with him. At least it’s not as dumb as Helena forgetting she was grieving

I’m assuming I can say spoilers because the channel description has (SPOILER WARNING!) at the top but the swamp fever arc was dumb imo, couldve at least shown them adventuring to the snow to hunt a rhino or something, and a giga falling flat after a few bombs when it was the perfect opportunity for it to rage and go on a killing spree

Finished watching the series and for me is a 10/10
Even with all the changes that they made compare with de game, the series have much more lore since we have new characters, plots, history and thats make Ark much more rich and interesting than before, when we only had 4 protagonists.
John's end make me tearing, my love for Mei Yin as a character grow much more, and now make sense to me why she is soooo powerfull and why Nerva se her as a threat.

Before the series, for me, Mei was put as a enemy for Nerva only bc they have other pourposes for Rockwell and Helena, now i know they both have a really hard past, and both fight for what they think is right, and thats why they fight each other

Nerva came from a period on time that all that's matter is power and nothing more.
Mei Yin came from a period when she fight for freedom, for a people, even losting herselft during the process.
They both are such great characters

As a guy, I didn't care much for the gore or the relationship type content. But John and nerva were very well written and the cultural differences of people were very well handled. I feel like Mei yin was okay, and Helena was a bit, well, 21st century.

A lot of stuff is.... confusing. Not that the plot can't be followed, but where it's going is what confuses me. Not mentioning any spoilers for the show, but events in the first season of the show already make most of the Scorched Earth story in the game impossible or very hard to believe/justify happening. Throw in the Bobs Tall Tales explorer notes, and the story of Scorched Earth gets even MORE confusing because bits directly contradict both the in-game story from the original SE notes as well as the direction the paramount+ series has set.

As a guy the only two things I really didn’t like are first how they removed any and all depth from Rockwell and just made him a banale evil character when in the lore it is a lot different and more nuanced (they even made him unnecessarily sexist and creepy when in the lore at the start he actually respects Helena a lot and considers her the only one he can have an intelligent conversation with) and second the whole unnecessary romance between Helena and Mei Yin that not only isn’t canon, but feels incredibly rushed. Helena was grieving her wife one day and falling for someone the next, it felt waaay too fast

ngl, I really wished they showed more of the taming processes, especially for the larger carnivores. It doesn't seem like knock-out-taming is a thing in the show and the only way to tame is to gain the trust of the creatures, like how Helena helped Scary or how they fed the stego herd, but I don't think those methods would've worked for a yuty or even the giga

Thanks for getting back to me. Yeah, it is unfortunate. Apparently using a VPN might be our only way, but I'm not sure how legal those things are. Could always fly over to Aus for a day, watch the series, then fly straight home 😆

Apparently VPN still blocks the video from what I have heard so you can only hear the sound. I like to go legit though, I did see the first episode on Twitch on release. Maybe one day we will get the opportunity 🙂

Cheers that's good to know. I'd rather remain an honest man too. Bit of a longshot, but sometimes TVNZ runs shows from Paramount (Halo for example), so fingers crossed they might bring us Ark too. In the meantime, I guess we'll just have to avoid all the spoilers.

I had to wait for it to be available in Australia

which btw that portrayal of the aboriginal struggle in Australia, not entirely accurate but its respectable enough to address some of our cultural dillemas so that's a plus

May be a old fart here, but that sounds a lot like a marketing scam if your buying the game based off the apparent "official" connection.

The show-studio connections are only downplayed in this discord due to an old statement that was made here that cites that “the show is not produced by wildcard”. While that is the official statement, the show is promoted by WC, Snail, and produced by the creators of ark and some others from the studio (plus obviously all the external professionals needed for it) and it is very well connected. The cross-marketing between the two is more than legitimate

The connection is official and pure, for some old pr reason it’s just frowned upon to say so here

It's not frowned on per se, just that people seem to assume "Wildcard is always late", or "Wildcard can't make a game so why are they making a show", etc, so we make it a point to mention that it's not specifically Wildcard and shows take time, a lot.

And only Dollie has mentioned officially that it's not Wildcard, us mods are just trying to keep this channel itself on the show rather than allow game rants in here. There are other channels for that.

The mod isn't in the offical servers last I looked. That was the specific I war referring to. I love the game, it is the confusion on how these mods and adverts related to the timing and use of content and how that can be easily misunderstood given the change over to mods. The way the events are being run via mods. The way Gigantoraptor was released official servers compared to now the Jane set of notes.

Not dishing the product, dishing the hours of reboots trying to figure out why I could not find the notes except only in single player mode.
