1: Are the different maps on Steam the same as expansions?
2: If I want to start from the complete vanilla beginning (zero to hero) does any of the expansions add stuff that is a benefit? (QoL, better gear, dinos etc) ?

2. Each dlc has added things, from dinos to gear to resources, the wiki is a great place to find out. Usually free dlcs have most things from the paid ones. Just in a different style.

The paid dlc is the story maps, free dlc is extra maps that don't tie into the main story but are still really fun

But yeah if you play solo definitely tweak the settings up to 2-5x since the defaulylt settings are generally met for tribes with a good few people (I still play officials (they run on defaulylt settings) and I'm solo tho so it's really up to how fast paced you want it)

That's a good plan, the island is the first sorry map and it is a great map. Sometimes it's a little difficult with the caves but it's a good map overall

got a tip for the new map, Wiki is wrong, found through testing, it is not the drag weight of the dino fed to the new hawk but the amount of meat on the body that maxes the tame, feed sheep with as much health as possible to them. Slaughtered tame sheep work best.

i think u get it at level 38 and you need 75 keratin or chitin for it. Easiest way to get keratin i think is to kill the turtles and chitin is the little brown bugs on the beach.
