Yes and within a second or two. In their radial menu, you can set them to pick fert, unfert, or both, or neither.

Higher level ovis pick up at longer range. You can take a stack of dodo eggs (or other light weight ones) and drop them further and further away until the ovi doesn't pick it up. Then you know the range of your specific setup.

I have tested some things and I dont see the setting "add per level have any effect at all", upon googeling I get this ai answer: the "add per level" setting does not work in ARK: Survival Ascended and is a leftover from the original ARK that has been replaced by the new stat multiplier system..
