@primal plank ok!! so some notes:

1. you used your gun (the heavy laspistol) A LOT. that's ok, but the game relies heavily on melee combat. you may want to visit the psykanium (you'll know when you unlock it because you'll get a special cutscene) and replay the tutorial.
2. when enemies are about to hit you, a sound queue plays. it sounds like a sudden rushing of wind kinda, and usually it plays in the direction from where the attack is coming from. it helps immensely to wear headphones for this game.
3. enemies that are about to shoot at you make another unique sound queue that sounds a bit like a high-pitched zipper sort of sound. that queue means you should start sprinting to try and dodge some bullets, or find cover. the sound queue also plays from their general direction.
4. stay with the team!!!! try not to rush ahead and stick with everyone else. there's a mechanic called coherency that is covered in the tutorial that i recommend you revisit.
5. the maps can be very confusing to navigate when you're brand new, but generally, where there are enemies, that's where you should start heading. exploring is ok, but if the rest of the team is moving ahead, it's best to stick with them.
