Depends on your build. Columnus, Mark 2 Laspistol, Revolver, and even some of the Headhunter autoguns have some play

Dome is very good for telling your team to "Group up over there"

But as you go higher that's less of a concern

so it becomes a question of Dome for safety vs. Shriek for offense, and when you have all the Elites running around in Aurics you can use Warp Siphon to spam Shriek pretty quickly

which, thanks to Creeping Flames, will add quite a bit of damage to your kit

Only problems with it are A: the extra penetration upgrade is almost mandatory, so costs an extra talent point
and B: you don't get to have Psykinetic's Aura (CDR on Elite/Specialist kill for entire team)

so some times BB is better, and then Smite wins if you need CC over damage

Assail's biggest advantage over BB is the horde clear, so if you're using a stave that already excels at horde clear the BB/Assail line becomes a lot thinner

Yeah definitely take BR, I think the reason this build takes BR EP is so that you can snipe far away stuff with it. You're already going to be nuking everything nearby so hard with that trauma staff you will rarely gain any benefit from shriek since you need to hit stuff for the extra peril dump

So the shield + EP is so you can dump some BRs which are fast and free and remain safe from gunners

Shield is typically the main ability with void, but you can use any of the three technically.

so the instant you see a ranged threat or anything that would like toughness regen, shield

Helpful tips I've found:

1. Spam it. if you take bubble it lasts 25s and CD is 40s before any CDR.
2. Use for open areas to prevent gunners from pinning your team down, can use it to close distances
3. Breaching doors/chokes. It's great to force enemies into a melee "arena" by dropping it right inside a door/choke on them
