Dont think of "E" as a varialble. E is just there to denote the word "Expected".

it may be easier for you to think of E(X) simply as an average for now.

# languid belfry

basically, you prove that the equation is true by dividing a 1x1 square into smaller squares (and the squares show the frames of the meme), and computing the area in two different ways.
so, for example, the 3 biggest squares each have side equal to 1/2, so they contribute in total 3 * (1/2^2) of area. the next 3 smaller squares each have side equal 1/4, so they contribute in total 3 * (1/4^2) to the area. going on like that, all in all, the squares which have the frames of the meme have an area of:
3 * (1/2^2 + 1 /4^2 + 1/8^2 + ... )
which is the same as the sum anakin talks about. but also, we were working on a 1x1 the whole time, so the total area is 1. therefore, that sum must also equal 1.

#

btw i saw someone say the sum adds up to infinity. that's wrong. it adds up to a finite value: 1.

the image is just a visual proof of the sum, you can notice that the edges of the big square are equal to 1, then a small square's edge = 1/2. the first term of the sum is 1/4, multiplied by 3 gives the first big 3 squares, and from recursion you continue with the rest of the squares, going to infinity. however, their total sum is equal with the area of the big square, which is 1

why dont u square it tho

#

in this example i have they square it:

serene forum
# stark karma in this example i have they square it:

you should understand what the integral does. All it does is takes the interval that you indicated, divides it into infinitesimal parts, and then sums all the parts. In the problem, it's said that cross-section is a square.

The value 3 - 3x^(1/3) gives the height of the cross-section. But we know that the height equals the width because this is a square, so we can square the height and we will get the area of the cross-section.

But what is volume? Volume is the sum of all the areas of the cross-sections (i. e. integral) that's why you should square it, and integrate with the given boundaries.

serene forum
# stark karma uh does anyone know how to do this?

Now if you return to this question, the cross-sections are no longer squares and you cannot just simply square the value of the function. But you are given a height of a solid, and you know the width — sin(pi/2 * x). As the cross-sections are rectangular, you can find the area by multiplying the width by the height. Then again, to find volume, you integrate the expression for the area within the given boundaries and get the final answer

What is M , midpoint?

serene forum
# pine dust

(a) Find the derivative of your function and find its value in x=2, this will be the value of m. Then you have a condition: at point x=2 the value of the function is equal to the value of the tangent, then you can find the value of c.

(b) Integrate your function from x=2 to x=4, this will give you the area under the graph. You don't need all the area under the graph so you should subtract the area of the triangle that results between the tangent, line x=2 and x-axis. The result will be your answer.

(c) Check a couple of messages before yours, I've explained how to find the volume of such objects. There will be two differences: 1) in your case cross-sections will be circles; 2) you are already given the volume and you need to find upper boundary, but that's almost the same thing.

If you still have problems feel free to ask anything.

#

thus the length you showed is 40/2 = 20

supple island
#

i wouldn't assume that the angle is 45° if it's not given

hazy ocean
#

You don't have to assume a 45° angle. Like @ember kernel pointed out, the height of the large right angle triangle is 40 from the right figure and the base is 40. So that makes it an isosceles and right angled, making the angle 45°.
And as for getting the required length, you just use similarity. Because the height is divided in half (id est 20-20), so will the base. So that's 40/2 = 20

Try (if u want to do a formal demonstration) to come back to the definition of the E(.) function, then applied it to the indep variable Xn and try to conclude by demonstrated that the definition is fitting (E(.) is existing or not ? cos⁴α + sin⁴α = 1
(cos²α)² + (sin²α)² = 1
(cos²α + sin²α)² - 2sin²αcos²α = 1
1 - 2sin²αcos²α = 1
2sin²αcos²α = 0

#

4sin²αcos²α = 0
You can use sin2α = 2sinαcosα after this

#

Well if it is =0 then we can solve by substitution? The first eq i mean

#

Bit of a big process though...

solemn sphinx
#

No, substitution cannot be used here. It can be solved by placing variables on one side and constants on the other side.

#

It must be having a constant though. It will just be lengthy, but not tricky to solve

is that right?

Yes, correct

ember kernel
#

Euler's explicit method is the following :
U[i+1] = U[i] + h * f(X[i], U[i])

Where:
i is the iteration indice
U is the estimation of y
h = 0,2 is the step
f(x,u) = x²+xy is the partial derivative of y along the x-axis (here, f = X[i]² + X[i]•U[i])
We start with X[0] = 0 and thus U[0] = 3
We're going to y(1), thus we need to find U[5] (because 1/0,2 = 5)

Euler's Explicit Method :

(x=0) U[0] = 3
(x=0.2) U[1] = 3 + 0,2•(0² + 0•3) = 3
(x=0.4) U[2] = 3 + 0,2•(0,2²+0,2•3) = a
(x=0,6) U[3] = a + 0,2•(0,4²+0,4•a) = b
(x=0,8) U[4] = b + 0,2•(0,6²+0,6•b) = c
(x=1) U[5] = c + 0,2•(0,8²+0,8•c)

#

I'm getting a = 3,128 ; b = 3,41024 ; c = 3,8914688

Thus y(1) ~= U[5] = 4,642103808 ~= 4,6421

#

Check my answer and tell me if it's correct. If it isn't, I'll try to solve it using programs

x belongs to A

This is very general,but you know when you have 2 values out of 3,set up like a=b/c and you have the value of a and b(being the numerator ofc) but you’re looking for c,what gets divided by what ? And why?

I’ve recently been dividing it incorrectly,idk what’s going on 😅

V = D/t
75 = 100/t
t = ?

#

1,333

#

@halcyon ether

halcyon ether
#

t = 100 / 75

#

so, procedure: you multiply both sides by t (75t = 100), then divide each by 75 to get t

#

when ur familiar with this, a heuristic would be to "move t to the other side", meaning if t is the denominator on right hand side, when putting t into left hand side, you multiply left hand side by t. when it's numerator on RHS, you divide LHS by it

left knoll

Omggg thank you !!

  1. The perimeter of a X by Y rectangle is expressed X + Y + X + Y = 2(X+Y)
    (It's the total length of the border)

  2. You want to choose X and Y (integers) such that 18 = 2(X+Y). There are multiple solutions to this problem. Just pick one

  3. The area of a square of side length X is expressed X². (It's the side length multiplied by itself) You know that X² = 49. Based on that, you can find the value of X.

Note that I used X and Y as arbitrary names for the side lengths of the rectangles and square. But you may change them to fit the names you and yout teacher use ^^

ember kernel
#

R = total resistance of the wire
rho = wire resistivity (unchanged here)
l = wire length
a = wire section area

#

If you increase the length by 5%, use 105%*l = 1.05l in the formula (or 0.95l if you shorten the wire)
You can do the same with the section area a and you'll get an expression of R2 (the resistance of the modified wire)

To get the change of the resistance in percentage, just compute R2/R
(R is the resistance of the initial, unchanged wire, the formula of which is shown in the screenshot)
