As far as I know, having it set to the wrong option will make your tracking worse, but I'm not an expert.
It's to be able to handle different types of electrical environments, let me explain.

In the US, electricity is "cycled" at a rate of 60hz.
In the UK, it's cycled at 50hz (aka 50 times a second).
