Routes aren't good for the whole game routes are good for getting some place fast (so getting off ground and stuff) being able to free play is much better you only need to have a few routes to use to escape fast. And just go into a casual/private lobby and play around if you find something you like and think you can do consistently practice it and make it a route. Try and make them unpredictable so it's harder for people to cut you off too.
