It doesn’t only happen in survival mode but all other modes have no consequences for crashes. You just lose time but in survival mode when the game crashes it counts as a loss and when you lose in survival mode the characters and gear cannot be used anymore. Well the gear can be repaired but the characters are done for.

Tower crashes suck too but not as much as survival.
