Hi folks - I'm trying to play the recently released mod, WCW nWo Revenge Redux. I have patched the ROM and it plays fine on a software emulator, but on the latest official MiSTer N64 core, the characters all have the default red texture for shorts, vests etc as if the accessories couldn't be loaded, as well as missing textures on the match setup screens. Are there settings I would need to change to disable any ROM size restrictions? The official patch post mentioned that it now works with an Everdrive since they removed that restriction in the latest firmware, so that's really all I have to go on as a possibility. I'm currently just using the default setup for the core and would love to hear any suggestions everyone may have. Many thanks and I can post screenshots if that's of any help!

Let's ask an easier question. What is the file size of that rom after patching?

zinc dew
uneven moth
#

I'll get the actual hardware setup tonight and test using the everdrive and see - thanks for that suggestion Robby. Haggarman - it's currently 65,769KB (It essentially just adds intro music to every character).

zinc dew
#

Like I can’t test that myself lol, no flash carts!

uneven moth
#

Totally makes sense - I had just seen everdrive compatible and assumed it worked, but thinking that still doesn't mean it will work on actual hardware.

#

maybe only works on analogue 3d say for example with an everdrive. Eitherway, I'll know tonight and will report back.

The core can load roms slightly larger than 64MiB (65536kiB), if I remember correctly.

I'll see if I can find where I packed up my n64 and everdrive later to see if it boots if no one else beats me to it

Ok, got a chance to test it on the N64 tonight with the everdrive (latest firmware), and can report the mod works fine there.

I just used a hall effect drop-in replacement. It's not perfect but it's good enough, especially since it's under $20. A3D has those overclocking modes

plush summit
magic girder
#

I’m 99% sure that the M64 will end up being the most accurate way to play outside of original hardware, with a bit more time

wanton sun
#

James review is not wrong, there are still points to be done until release and we are working on it.
The performance will improve for sure until then. I mean, you know me. Is there any of my cores that has no turbo or overclock mode?
We will get there, but base work comes first and must finish before the fun part.

lean spruce
#

I´d take accurate to real hardware performance over overclock modes

remote hatch
#

I'm not a big fan of N64 but I will buy M64 :)))

wanton sun
# lean spruce I´d take accurate to real hardware performance over overclock modes

Yes, that is why it's currently slower.
Let me explain: on mister we run the RAM at (up to) double bandwidth with random latency.
On M64 it's original bandwidth and original latency.
However, the higher RAM bandwidth was useful to hide that some things have shortcuts.
E.g. RSP currently cannot execute 2 instructions in the same cycle as N64 can. This is for both Mister and M64 and is seen in the -38% in James Video.
This is one of the major points still to be implemented.

magic girder
#

Nobody here doubts you

lean spruce
#

Thanks for the insight. And is very exciting to hear, from a preservation perspective!

magic girder
#

Fingers crossed some more goodies make their way back to the MiSTer, limitations notwithstanding flushedshy

wanton sun
#

Some already made it back, e.g. the MTM fix

#

For the accuracy part, I cannot do that due to completly different memory system.
For RSP dual instruction it might work, I have to see

magic girder
#

No pressure at all. What we have already is amazing

magic girder
upper pivot
#

@wanton sun why does it say Goldeneye has major slowdowns? Same reason that you described above regarding the RSP?

wanton sun
#

To be honest: I asked for these to not be included, because it's most likely gone until first users will have it in hand, but they wanted to be fully transparent about the current state.

remote hatch
wanton sun
#

It's a different kind of development if you have fixed release dates and people review the first product instead of improving over time.
Thankfully no one reviewed my first n64 core build against real hardware 😅

zinc dew
# wanton sun To be honest: I asked for these to not be included, because it's most likely gon...

I think it’s a double edged sword to do that before release. Because it’s true it reflects “current state” but most people will see that and assume it’ll reflect “shipping state”.

And even though I have full confidence in you, it’s not something you can guarantee with legally binding certainty that will be fixed before people have it in their hands.

On top of that, some prominent YouTubers already have debug consoles and if you aren’t transparent about that it will be called out. And if you aren’t transparent about that, what else aren’t you transparent about?

#

so I think that was the right call, even if there will be some potentially perceived negativity as a byproduct but I assume their PR team is anticipating and ready to address that if it becomes an issue

lean spruce
#

sometimes it takes time to get rid of old truths. Hopefully people will not keep saying M64 runs slow in a years time

zinc dew
#

I mean, if you see someone repeating a lie then call them out. That’s about all anyone can do. Most of the time it’s an honest mistake on their part.

lean spruce
#

I mean how long did people say MiSTer didnt work with TLB games, long after it was implemented

But it still doesn't run Libdragon 🙁

someone in the server could test it, see screenshot.

At the company I work at I'm dealing with artist/public relations. I usually just reach out to cool people and ask if they are interested in collaborating for content. We also get plenty of inquires from great content creators, so it goes both ways for us. We're however very open and easy going, and I try to make myself very accessible for people to reach out to. The experience I have with other companies in our industry is that they are a lot harder to reach out to.

Hmm I'm thinking about selling my A3D since the M64 is going to be cheaper but I'm a little hesitant

#

They'll basically have the same features by the time the M64 gets save states

#

And it has better CRT filters and I like that you can customize them and that they'll be selling an analog video adapter

weary palm
#

Does the M64 really have better filters?

odd walrus

It has horizontal bloom which I don't think A3D has and you can fully customize the look of the filters

I never use scanlines as it wasn't something I noticed when playing games back in the day. I guess the TVs I played on were kinda soft. Also, PAL, so higher line density, smaller gaps.

mossy vector
#

I never wanted scanlines. they were just there. kind of. I wouldn't sit 2 feet from the screen.

#

Nobody simulates velocity scan modulation, where the scanline shrinks and expands based on brightness.

weary palm

You mean a thicker beam when it's brighter? There are filters for MiSTer that try to imitate that.

Oh no, it's more visually crisis inducing than that. Vertical lines no longer line up.

Even better be old and wrinkly, and have the caption be "I'm dying". And then never address that in the video script. Not even the expected "I was dying to try this new system" so people will watch all the way to the end and be doubly disappointed.

Probably would run better than on mister, but not possible to reach 100% accuracy. You need insane amounts of internal memory for that.
The issue with the DS is mostly the VRAMs. If you cannot replicate their latency and bandwidth, there are two possibilities:

  • get graphical glitches when rendering wasn't finished in time
  • overclock the GPU/PPU to hide it
  • stall the CPU -> slowdown
Second options seems like it might be viable to have a good experience with it, but it would lack behind current best software emulation, so I'm not sure it's worth it.
upper pivot
#

But the DS has less than 1MB of VRAM, right? Couldn’t you just use a dedicated external SRAM chip to handle this? Or how much block ram does the M64 fpga have on it?

bitter fjord
#

if we experience latency issues, can't we design a "RAM Cart" by leveraging the cartridge I/O pins of the M64 to add an extra memory module?

Here are the numbers for the Cyclone V SE found on the DE-10 nano. (With reservations for AI inaccuracies 😝)

But I guess this means that an affordable board for a good DS experience is still a ways off

chilly ember

M64 would only need half so

I do hope in the future we'll be eventually be able to have an NDS core on something from Robert even if it is from the drone company

vapid hawk
#

cant you just fit 900KB into bram?

#

or is bram actually too slow for this job

wanton sun
#

you can if you have enough. You typically need some FPGA about double the size of misters and there are other parts that require BRAM as well

#

This is actually by far the best and easiest solution. It's just that currently no platform is available that offers this to a larger crowd

Have there been discussions on future endeavors that might possibly bring this platform to the masses?

M64 FPGA size is made for N64. No point in making specialized hardware 50-100$ more expensive just for possibility of third party cores.
This is different from a platform that targets "everything" from the very start.
