Yes i liked to try lxqt at first but when i asked , i heard that cinnamon and xfce are more stable and xfce a bit lighter , so i am thinking of trying it in the future to see the difference and if its good for me ,so i am wondering if its missing a lot of programs that i need ๐Ÿ˜…

unborn plume
drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

well tell me your computer specs

#

are u at the machine now?

#

@drowsy snow

drowsy snow
#

I have 8gb ram
I3 4160
Intel graphic 4400

unborn plume
#

4th generation intel i3..

#

what's the clock speed?

#

and is it mobile or desktop?

drowsy snow
#

Desktop
Clock speed ? How to check it ?

unborn plume
#

in cinnamon start menu, type info

#

it should show a information window about your system which will have cpu clock speed

drowsy snow
#

3.6ghz

unborn plume
#

that's pretty good. how are things feeling/ handling on ur install?

drowsy snow
#

U mean on cinnamon ?

unborn plume
#

ya

#

Cinnamon and KDE have really great applets. they are little things that can run on the taskbar to show you stuff

drowsy snow
#

There is some lag like when i open a program windows and when i minimize it

unborn plume
drowsy snow
#

Yes we can say almost 1 s

#

But when i open the program furst time like for browser it takes time

unborn plume
#

yeah the browser or heavy applications take longer on first time open, no matter what operating system. (hard drives are slower than SSDs)

unborn plume
drowsy snow
#

Is it normal that on windows i download really fast and on linux there is limitation on download speed ?

unborn plume
# drowsy snow What do u mean ?

Applets run on the taskbar to say monitor something. Desklets (Cinnamon only) run on the desktop and serve a similar function.

unborn plume
drowsy snow
#

It doesnt show the speed ๐Ÿ˜… when i download from browser , the applet isnt working

#

Yes it doesnt work properly

unborn plume
#

i also recommend it to display as bits per second not BYTES per second

#

becuz internet providers advertise their speeds in bits/s

drowsy snow
#

Bcs there is certainly a problem with download speed , i downloaded from 2 sites i used to download from and i used always to get normal speed on windows but now it doesnt go more than 1mb /s ๐Ÿ˜… a file with 400 mb i need to wait like more than half hour

unborn plume
unborn plume
drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

well ur on ethernet right?

#

the wired connection

#

so pick that in the applet settings, and it will display after

drowsy snow
#

Where ?

#

And i tried on firefox but same problem

unborn plume
#

the gear icon next to the applet

#

and make sure the applet has a check mark on the left side.

drowsy snow
#

Yes i changed to bits

unborn plume
#

and to wired interface.

#

or eth

#

or enp.. whatever relates to ethernet

drowsy snow
#

But didnt find wired for ethernet

unborn plume
#

show settings

drowsy snow
#

One sec , i am trying on mx linux , on browser its the same

#

๐Ÿ˜ญ

#

I used to download with jdownloader , bcs on browser even on windows i has a problem with speed limited

unborn plume
#

hmm that's strange

#

some vpn thing?

#

idk what thing are between your keyboard/cpu/ and your internet service provider

#

i'll let u know if I find a good download manager for linux. but i g2g a while now.

#

ttyl

drowsy snow
#

G2g, ttyl ๐Ÿ˜… i dont understand

#

Maybe its a problem with linux bcs i tried another download manager , j downloader i used to download files with and it let me download with full speed on windows but on linux its not that good

#

Lol look at the top left and the black thing bottom right besides๐Ÿ˜… an glitch , the program image normally there , dont know why it disappear from there and goes to top left

#

And for example firefox in taskbar sometimes doesnt work when i minimize it and want to reopen it

#

๐Ÿ˜…

unborn plume
drowsy snow
drowsy snow
#

@unborn plume i tried to go for xfce version but i saw that the link u showed me for iso is for hybrid iso and on download from the site i found dvd iso ? Is there a difference , ๐Ÿ˜… bcs i installed it but had some problems like user not sudoers and when i tried a way from yt to make it sudoer i wanted to try sudo apt update but had an error of repository
Is it bcs i downloaded an iso from dvd and its better in hybrid mode ?

#

And xfce doesnt have even softwares ๐Ÿ˜… it has just the synaptic

unborn plume
unborn plume
#

or about Spiral?

unborn plume
#

BTW This is how to make regular user have sudo prompt like in Mint/Ubuntu:

#

keep that file in a safe place for future reference.

drowsy snow
#

But i used the dvd iso

#

I will see the pdf later , i used already a way with usermod i found on yt , i also used a one that can add a usermod with enroot and to add it on bottom besides root

#

But had the repository bookworm doesnt have release file

drowsy snow
#

And according to yt , a way to solve it is to uncheck something in software and updates but that windows is missing on xfce

drowsy snow
#

I solved it ๐Ÿ˜… finally , found another way with terminal

unborn plume
drowsy snow
#

@unborn plume is there a way like to make the system in a language and terminal in another language ? I tried the debian facile iso to see if download speed works but its mainly in french , but in terminal the answers of commands is in french , but its hard to look for errors when french isnt very global and need to translate each time to look for answers on google or yt

#

So i am wondering if i can make just terminal in english but i am afraid if system in french and terminal in english it will make problems and errors

unborn plume
#

unless u are just testing live.

#

otherwise check 'locales or region' in settings to switch language

drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

no

drowsy snow
#

Thanks

drowsy snow
#

@unborn plume , hi how are u

#

I saw that on my debian xfce , my download speed is capped

#

Like i cant get more than 1mb/s

#

In different websites

#

But when i tried another debian environment on live session my download speed for the same file and the same website was 9 to 10mb/s

unborn plume
#

oh that's interesting indeed.

#

which other environment did you try?

drowsy snow
#

I had that problem on cinnamon , then i tried the debian facile iso since the launching wasnt their problem but the debian bootloader itself , and now the same problem , and i tried the official xfce environment and i had like 10mb/s speed

#

But i remember that i tried before the debian i use now and i saw that it download with full speed , maybe after doing the installation it gets capped

#

@unborn plume but when i look for my internet speed like on sites like speedtest or fast com , i see that its normal like it reachs 93 mbps

unborn plume
#

which environment gave yu the best d/l speed?

drowsy snow
#

I had just xfce on usb drive , so its that one that gave best dl speed but even my environment i am using now had also best downlozd speed when i tried it at first๐Ÿ˜…

unborn plume
#

what environment do u have now?

#

it's possible that non-persistent live linux environments feel or behave faster cuz they dont use HDD

#

perform in RAM

drowsy snow
#

๐Ÿ˜…but that speed is the same when i used to download on my windows , i used to download with that speed and when i turned to linux i had this problem , now i have xfce debian offical one but from a community that do some changes on adding some preinstalled programs to be a bit easy for new users of linux , i am trying it for 2 days after cinnamon

unborn plume
#

i was going to suggest to boot MX live in persistent mode, then open MX Package Installer, install lxqt desktop from there, and switch to it after from login screen (there's an icon at top)

#

or try Spiral Linux lxqt version

#

both are 100% Debian with better tweaks done.

drowsy snow
#

Or just to change environment of lxqt

unborn plume
#

no just run it on MX

drowsy snow
#

Of mx

unborn plume
#

Yes

#

the package installer's first tab makes it so easy

drowsy snow
#

So downlozd speed was mainly from my environment ?

unborn plume
#

i really dont know

#

I've run many diiffernt things over time and always have had constant ISP speed across all.

#

well i g2g. ttyl

drowsy snow
#

What do u mean by this ?

unborn plume
#

i sleep

drowsy snow
#

๐Ÿ˜… sleep with coding language

drowsy snow
#

Its like this , i am trying with a download manager to check speed

drowsy snow
#

On sporal linux , is it stable , since its new os , i think , and with new community so less people are trying it so less help and more errors that can be found since bigger community faster to find errors and to fix them

#

๐Ÿค”

unborn plume
#

d/l manager is peaking at 1 MB of file per second. That's 8 Mbps. Not great but not bad either!

unborn plume
#

just made better from what I hear.

drowsy snow
#

And on downlozd manager its megabyte /s

unborn plume
#

keep in mind that the source server that you're getting your file from, may NOT necessarily be able to go so fast? it's a possibility

#

especially if many ppl are downloading from it all at once.

unborn plume
drowsy snow
#

For me i have 100 mbps internet speed so its 10 mB /s for download and me i get just 1mB/s
And i know for the website sometimes there is some links that do a limitation if speed unless u downlozd from premium link to get full speed ,but i used to get full speed in windows and i got full speed for the same file and same website and even downloaded the same download manager on live session and i got full speed

unborn plume
#

ah I see your comparison.

#

well it can't be all linux distributions. Try some different ones. Even non-Debian ones.

drowsy snow
#

And when i tried to download on my installed debian and saw that there is a limitation of speed i just restart the computer and tried with live session like difference less than 15 min

#

And saw that it download full speed

unborn plume
#

what do u mean the difference less than 15 minutes?

#

it was fifteen minutes faster with the live system?

drowsy snow
#

Like i tried the same download link in same time almost ,not like i tried my debian in the morning and the live session at night , bcs its true there is sometimes period of time especially in the evening or at night when a lot of people using internet and stuff

unborn plume
#

are u saying in the live mode, it completed in less time (by an amount of 15 minutes less) than on the installed system?

drowsy snow
drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

yes, Ubuntu MATE

#

and Linux Lite.

drowsy snow
#

And its true there is a difference of 15 min ๐Ÿ˜… ofc downloading like 1 or 2gb with a speed of 8 mB/s and 1mB/s ,the download will end real faster in 8mB/s of intervalle of more than 15min

unborn plume
#

ofc

drowsy snow
#

I will recheck on debian xfce official and see on live session and see download speed , and if its good , i will install it and see after installation if the speed is still good maybe after the installation something happened , i downloaded also spiral linux xfce on usb to try it after and maybe i will try ubuntu bcs perhaps the package for ethernet compatibility that it is installed is the one that cause the problรจme ๐Ÿค”

#

Thanks for help

unborn plume
unborn plume
drowsy snow
#

๐Ÿ˜…ahh ok

drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

but they're all community reworks of the base Ubuntu, thus different websites.

drowsy snow
#

So mate is smoother than ubuntu official with xfce environment or it doesnt exist ?

unborn plume
drowsy snow
#

@unborn plume i installed spiral linux and will try it tomorrow , i saw that spiral linux is like the same as my version of debian with optimised programs that i had , but has some other programs too , and i liked how they added a program to install bootloader , i didnt need to install grub , while on all the debian environment i tried (cinnamon , xfce official , xfce from the community that add preinstalled programs ) all need to go to mx player to install grub

unborn plume
#

insane, really

#

maybe they messed up their live ISO releases

drowsy snow
#

But got this when i did sudo apt upgrade

drowsy snow
#

But when i do sudo apt update , everything clear๐Ÿ˜…

#

๐Ÿ˜ญ even on spiral linux the speed is capped

drowsy snow
#

What i dont understand is that i tried after that spiral linux on luve session and dowload speed is with full speed

unborn plume
drowsy snow
drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

remember, update command only refreshes the available LIST of software.
Upgrade command is what upgrades all of the softwares after getting the new list.

drowsy snow
#

Yes , update then upgrade ๐Ÿ‘Œ

drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

and it doesnt even reach half.

#

well, I'm running 'bunt Mate 20 from a while back but it's good anyway

unborn plume
#

Hello @drowsy snow

#

Sample of that OS running, with Firefox web discord running.

drowsy snow
# unborn plume

Ahh nce , ๐Ÿ˜… when i saw this pic for a sec i remembered windows xp

unborn plume
#

yeah I themed it

drowsy snow
#

The good old day

unborn plume
#

I love the feel. I'm using Ubu Mate rn

#

since yesterday

drowsy snow
#

I used to never give a shit about how much ram and all , i open internet and open the windows i want wothout worrying and now on win10 i open just 3 windows and here i am with 5gb ram used , for me on windows i turn it on and its empty and already 2.7 used ๐Ÿ˜…

unborn plume
#

oh yeah, i know.

#

well I sort of know.. but I haven't used since Windows 7 and it was clean install, and not too bad

#

u can see in the pic what the usage is

#

and that's with browser open, page loaded

drowsy snow
#

If windows 7 isnt used and isnt compatible with a lot of programs now i can gladely return to it , but saw that steam already stopped the compatibility with windows 7 on january 2024 and i am afraid sites like twitch and 1080p quality in videoa

unborn plume
#

Steam i could understand. Websites that stream videos, typically do fine on a fairly up to date web browser, but everything gets out of date after five years end-of-support

drowsy snow
#

Yes on linux with chrome even with 4 or 5 pages it can go to 2 or 2.3 gb max

unborn plume
#

if they're heavy pages, then that's understandable

#

blame the Web for being heavy now

drowsy snow
#

I am on windows and with just 2 pages open , one for yt and one twitch and its 4gb used

#

Yes some web browser use data a bit more than others too

unborn plume
#

I've only used Firefox 99% of the time for the last maybe 5 years

#

since I discovered it on MX 5 years ago

#

old Firefox was not so good, but since they released Quantum (version 61 i think) it was great

#

it's up to v 122 now

#

one update per month

drowsy snow
#

U use firefox esr or the official version ?

unborn plume
#

they're both official. but a mix of old n new

#

87, 91, 96, 105 i think

drowsy snow
#

Like esr i think official but gets less updates

unborn plume
#

I like the less updates thing

#

they will issue any critical security updates if needed, right away

drowsy snow
#

I will try it , thanks , i tried ubuntu , iliked the design but i saw that debian xfce or even spiral is a bit lighter ๐Ÿ˜… and the same problem with limited speed

#

I will try the download manager u are suggesting

polar cedar
unborn plume
#

I'm so puzzled by this speed of download weirdness

drowsy snow
drowsy snow
drowsy snow
#

So the end of the story is debian 12's grub does not work on dell computers I had the same problem. Instead of fixing it I just booted back into fedora and installed fedora.

#

As i searched i5 better than i3

#

But what if we have i5 10th generation and i3 11 th generation

unborn plume
#

yes quite a bit better over i3

drowsy snow
#

So what processor is better

unborn plume
#

i'd go with the i5 even it's a bit older

drowsy snow
#

Why ?

unborn plume
#

the i5 is made to handle a heavier load n graphics

drowsy snow
#

So for newer in generation what can give to i3 , like in which way is better ?

unborn plume
#

u'll have to research that yourself

drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

the top one looks overall the best value

drowsy snow
#

I7 4th generation
I7 10th generation
I3 11th generation
And i5 10th generation

unborn plume
#

only get the later generations if ur planning to put Windows 11 on it

drowsy snow
#

he needs to use photoshop mainly and of course office stuff , and the problem since windows 10 ipdates are max 2025 so maybe he will install win 11 then ๐Ÿ˜…

unborn plume
#

either of the 10th gen ones should support W11.. see this list

drowsy snow
#

So better to choose the higher brand like here i7 and according to budget and his will to install win 11 or not to choose the 10th generation

unborn plume
#

have to see the processor model exactly, and compare to that list ^

drowsy snow
#

And for photoshop do tbey work fine without lag on any of the two generations?

unborn plume
#

for professional big work, should be fine either i5 n up

#

for simple edits, anything.

drowsy snow
unborn plume
#

no the cores are a different thing altogether

#

just i5 is made for more heavier workloads

#

with better graphics too

#

i'm using a first gen core i5 with an SSD for many years and it works totally great on Linux for what I need it for anyway

drowsy snow
#

And what about generations , do they add more stuff ,like u said before that its better just if i want to install win 11 on it so if not there will be no difference between i7 4th and 10th generation on win 10?

unborn plume
drowsy snow
#

Even some sites say i5 10th better than i7 4th

#

๐Ÿ˜… now i am confused , i thought we always go for the brand ๐Ÿค”

drowsy snow
#

I got it , like i5 10th generation is higher in generation than i7 4th but on windows 11 the comparision is reversed ๐Ÿ˜… the i5 can be better than i7

#

The reversed comparision is what i didnt unserstand๐Ÿ˜…

#

Like one better than one on win 10 can be worst on win 11๐Ÿค”

#

Bcs like i told u if after 2 years my brother will think of upgrading to win 11 so he will have the worst laptop according to this sensd ๐Ÿ˜‚

I found a solution. For future people, you need to go into the recovery mode, click boot normally, then open the terminal and type sudo nano /etc/default/grub and edit the line "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" " to be GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" (adding nomodeset) this fixes the error and lets you proceed to default loading.

The following will create a 2 gig swapfile (1 MiB x 2048)
Adjust to suit your size accordingly.

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1024k count=2048 (make big empty file)
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile (set linux read/write permissions on file)
sudo e4defrag /swapfile (defragment the file)
sudo mkswap /swapfile (transform the big file into usable swap)
sudo swapon /swapfile (turn on swap (virtual memory) on in the system)
free -h (test to view that swap memory is now in play)

sudo xed /etc/fstab (edit the fstab file to make swap automatically available on each boot)

(put this into the fstab file on new line near bottom) :
/swapfile none swap sw 0 0

(save the fstab file and exit the editor)

sudo reboot
free -h (once booted back to desktop, to check memory and virtual memory (swap) )
