I was using Lutris again. And when I added the option for "windows games" through steam and it gave me an error and then Lutris wouldn't load my steam libraries. I restarted my computer and now I'm left with a blank screen. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 opens the terminal menu but I can't do anything on the graphical menu. Switching workspaces shows the graphics briefly but it goes black again. I tried used this forum (https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2230842#p2230842) and it didn't do anything. Not sure what else to do.
#Blank Screen After Login
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I don't know. I was frantically looking through google frantically to fix it I didn't know what it was for
HOW TO GET INTO GRUB MENU (see #1331824974440431768 message below for picture)
Reboot, interrupt Mint normal boot to get to 'GNU GRUB 2.xx' screen (hit Esc or hold shift)
- Hit
Esca few times slowly or holdShiftabout 2 to 3 seconds after pc powers on and shows the manufacturer's logo.
(( UEFI-booted systems use the ' press Esc' technique.))
((Legacy-booted systems use Shift)) and lean on the shift key a good 8 seconds at least.
-
This must done with perfect timing BEFORE you see a Mint logo or other OS logo on screen (ie - before handover to OS load)
-
after this is done right, you should see a menu as pictured at very bottom of this thread.
Once you see the GRUB menu:
then choose "Mint advanced options" to access other possible linux kernels, or press e to 'edit' startup parameters.
Skip to here for safemode boot steps:

Holding shift booted into normal mint. pressing esc showed like startup details.
then u pressed it too late
gotta hit it before you ever see the Mint large green logo
nope
type normal then enter
use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get to a realmode terminal, get to a prompt. Log in with the usual exact credentials of username and password.
TTY 2 as u were before
This?
I have GNU nano 7.2 up now.
scroll down to GRUB_MENUSTYLE GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE= and put exactly "menu"
immediately after the equal sign
and put the GRUB_TIMEOUT to equal 2
then show a quick pic for confirmation of that area of file
I don't think I have that first option.
u can put 3 for three seconds if u dont mind three at start
then press ctrl-o to save
and press enter to keep same filename
then ctrl-x quits
then do sudo update-grub exactly
Aight. Should I do anything else in the terminal?
did it update?
Yea
sudo reboot
n press down arrow
to stop grub countdown
then go in mint advanced. start latest kernel in recovery mode
hang on
select the dpkg 'fix broken packages'
then after, boot normal from same menu
So after booting, the login screen displayed just as before. But after logging in I still have the blank screen.
SAFE MODE BOOT.
ok reboot, this time at grub menu, press e during the countdown
Aight I'm in the setparams screen
add nomodeset after the words "quiet splash" on the second last line
preceded by a single space.
then press F10 to boot up
I don't see that specific line. Should I just add that to the quiet splash in the "Linux" collumn?
second-last line, yes.
Logging in gives the same issue.
tf did u do?
I don't know 😭
I do have ventoy and time shift setup
Idk how to use it tho

if a program gets stuck, all u gotta do in mint cinn. is hit ctrl-alt-backspace
boot mint live now
Bro 💀💀💀
That fixed it
then mount the hard drive
use the desktop a while
Ty though, I appreciate that
like 15 minutes
keep in mind, ur in nomodeset rn
so it may comeback. this mode uses no GPU
or some kind of safemode drivers
So don't run a game for right now
no
just browse a bit. run some apps
see how stable it behaves
then after test reboot in normal way n test again
Yeah HW monitor is showing no gpu
this was meant as advice in case Lutris or other program gets super frozen, and you cant even do alt+F2 then xkill
Gotcha. For some reason it worked though lol
do alt+F2 then xkill on any app right now as a test
u click the skullhead or x cursor on the app to immediately kill it
or ctrl-alt-T (for terminal), then type xkill there
Aight, I got about 30 brave tabs open, 5 zen tabs open, Cohesion, music with a visualizer, discord, 24 pictures and a video playing. The only thing taking a hit is my ram.
It's working pretty solidly.
Video's a little choppy but working well.
My brain is scattered sometimes
I use brave for general use and zen for productivity. Because I used brave and arc on Windows in the same way. But zen is better.
But yeah. I think it's fixed.
did u reboot as normal?
Okay, the issue is back when I use normal mode.
Should I check my startup apps in recovery mode?
xkill didn't work
Neither did logging back in.
something seems to have gone odd with your graphics system/drivers inexplicably
boot back using the nomodeset safe-mode
wait
can u get to TTY2 now please?
before reboot
How do that? Ctrl Alt F2?
then log in at tty, and do inxi -Fxxxz and show pics of it, top to bottom
yes
Yeah I can't scroll up or down.
or else do inxi -SMCGxxz
This?
is this with the regular boot? aka NOT with the nomodeset?
cuz it looks like nomodeset is engaged.
need to see the AMD driver
Oh shoot holdup I'll double check
ok amdgpu
hmm im not sure what else to do
you could try from the TTY, sudo apt install --reinstall cinnamon-desktop
@warm ginkgo
It gave me an error "package 'cinnamon-desktop' has no installation candidate"
ok just reinstall it as before but name cinnamon
So it successfully installed. I clicked Ctrl+Alt+F7, black screen. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and logged back in. I can see the screen again, just like it did in compatibility mode.
For some reason it opened the time shift folder.
Bruhhh black screen again after reboot.
I don't know what I did to screw this up so bad 💀 but I might need to just use time shift.
Conclusive solution:
boot to live environment desktop using live DVD or USB; launch TimeShift app there and choose "restore" (from snapshot)
do u got a ventoy stick?
depends if u included home folder in the snapshots.
or elect to not restore home.
Yea
My friend set it up and I don't think he opted into the home directory.
did u do a separate backup of your home personal data folders on a separate device?
I'm doing that rn.
To be safe
koo
Do I now just label this as "abandoned"?
no. u hopefully get it solved, and mark it solved
I'll give a status update in a few hours. Going to let the other drive back up overnight.
Status update: the snapshot fixed the blank screen issue,
good thing.
