So I just fired up my new pc fresh installed windows from a usb drive and it’s telling me I need to activate windows, I don’t have the key anymore it was from years and years ago. What do I do?

if you've still got the old PC, you might be able to use a Windows key viewer program to retrieve the old key, but there might be an activation limit on the key that'll keep you from using it

you could run without activating Windows, and be doomed to see the watermark at the bottom of your screen all the time

or you could procure a fresh Windows license key. Officially speaking, the most legal choice is to purchase one from Microsoft directly, or from an authorized reseller

If yes, it solves an issue with capturing audio from consoles where they don't send voice chat over HDMI to the TV and capture card, but instead over Bluetooth to your controller. The Chat Link Cable plugs into the controller and allows you to also capture the chat that would otherwise be lost.

For that, you'd be looking at a capture card instead. You plug the capture card into your PC, your PS5 into the capture card, and then you'd be able to see the PS5 on your PC or capture it in OBS to stream.

For simply showing the PS5 on your screen, it might not be ideal, since all capture cards add a tiny bit of delay to what gets captured (somewhere around a fraction of a second). Depending on the game, especially fast paced shooters and the like, this delay might make the game unplayable.

If you've got a desktop PC with a separate monitor, what you could do is get an HDMI switcher instead. These are devices that can flip between two or more HDMI input cables plugged into them (like your PC and PS5) and only show one on your monitor at a time. This would both be cheaper and get around the lag issue mentioned above.

If you've got a laptop or an all-in-one desktop (computer is built into the screen), though, then your only option is a capture card.

Won two (2) smart plugs from a giveaway they were doing

The plugs on a hardware level aren't all too special at first glance, but they run the ESPHome firmware and have an ESP32-C3 WiFi chip in them. ESPHome is really neat since you can customize the firmware basically as you see fit, and the fact it's using an ESP32 means that it has Bluetooth

And, if you're using it with Home Assistant, that means you can do some really, really neat stuff with it

Like having a HA dashboard on your phone that tracks where you are in your home and changes the view to only show stuff that's immediately relevant to you

That could be kinda creepy if that data was being sent to some random company so they could spy on you, but since you compile your own firmware for your own device, it never actually leaves your home network

Question as I'm looking into purchasing a neocam and neocapture as I have an Asus gaming laptop with built in cam but It seems my camera is not working as good as it should. Quality on the Facecam Neo is pretty good! There's a bunch of reviews on YouTube you could check out showing it off; I'd suggest checking out Nutty's review at the very least. And yes, it can attach to a laptop!

As foir the Game Capture Neo, it is compatible with all of the currently released consoles, and in all likelihood it should be compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 when it releases!

Three primary issues to tackle there: figuring out how to send the external program in charge of making it all happen info on what button you pressed, converting that info into an actual press on a Stream Deck, and of course capturing/importing the screen into Minecraft itself

I kinda handle the first two in a sort of dumb way. Behind each button are some calibrated sculk sensors hooked up to a command block that outputs a series of 1-8 spaces in chat. My program watches the logfile for this Minecraft instance, filters everything else out, and if it sees anything that matches that pattern it decodes it into knowing which button I'm looking to press.

My program (primarily written in TypeScript) then taps into another programming language (AutoIT) that handles actually moving the mouse very quickly to a Virtual Stream Deck hidden on my second monitor, pressing the button, then giving control back to the Minecraft window once the click is done. It's not seamless, especially if you're moving your mouse when it does so, but it fakes the effect well enough

Yep! I wanted to keep the Minecraft instance itself as vanilla as possible for this project, primarily because I don't know Java or Kotlin lmao

The one major concession that I had to make was to use a plugin called LCon. Normally when you're playing on a server you have access to a management interface called RCON, but that's not available in single player

LCON exposes a websocket interface that lets you do stuff kinda similar to what RCON can do, importantly including sending chat commands

I wonder what other things you can use that websocket for, like can you manage inventory etc

To my knowledge, you can use it for anything you can do with the built in game chat

So with some funky NBT shenanigans, you probably could manage your inventory

(the downside of the project: LCON only exists on Forge for 1.20.1 and below, which meant I had to downgrade the world and switch mod loaders once I realized that)

On the subject of NBT data: that's where the hardest problem happened. Watching the chat can get data out of MC easily enough, but how do you get data back in, especially when that data isn't in the format you want to use?

In any case, getting back to Stream Deck in Minecraft, long story short on the screen side of things is that I take 4 screenshots a second of a Virtual Stream Deck instance, scale them down and crop them to 8x8 pixel images, use code I borrowed stole from someone else to figure out which Minecraft blocks most closely match the pixels in question, then assemble a corresponding NBT file for a structure block and write that to disk where the game wants it (protip: these need to be gzipped for Minecraft to accept them. This took a while to figure out)

Since structure blocks are loaded into memory when first loaded, and since the in memory version has priority over the disk version, I need to change the file name and update the structure block each screen refresh accordingly. I can do that via LCON, thankfully, which prevents me from having to automate typing in chat. Once the data's in and set up, a simple observer clock constantly pulses the structure block and reloads the screen in the game world.

Combine button pressing and screen scraping, and you get something that reasonably resembles the actual thing :3

Funny thing: I was working on this before the public Virtual Stream Deck announcement, but instead using an instance of Stream Deck Mobile running via Windows Subsystem for Android (basically Android apps running on Windows). I showed early progress off to Ochatach, and he was like "yeah definitely try to finish this before Computex" without saying what for

All PCs have a certain amount of standby power available even if the computer is completely off, which means that in certain power states you can get stuff like lights staying on that you'd prefer not to. You might be able to go into your BIOS and hunt down a setting to have the computer turn that stuff off entirely when off.

This admittedly mostly applies to lighting. Fans actively spinning when the computer is otherwise off shouldn't be happening

Awesome, so we may have similar BIOS layout...for me I have a STRIX B550F...As far as lights go, there is a setting where you can enable what is called stealth mode, which turns off all leds [including the power led if you have one on the case]. Would you need help in where to find this?

Lol I love how I got my Wave 3, and the cable that came with it is so long it works perfectly in my room where the closest outlet is far away from my bed

So now I can sit in bed and charge my phone :D

And I should add, my room is outdated and has 2 prong outlets - I guess if I really wanted to I could get an adapter and use an extension cord but that seems unsafe
(There is one 3 prong one available but they're in the other side of the room)

So interesting thing about 2-to-3 prong cheater plugs: there's a (small) possibility you might be able to make them actually grounded. Most of those plugs have a little loop at the end of them that's designed to be screwed into the wall plate, which (in theory) should be electrically connected to ground. By making that connection, you allow for at least some degree of grounding capability for your devices

Of course, this does absolutely nothing if the electrical switch box itself in the wall isn't grounded, which depending on the age of your wiring is a very real possibility

Never assume anything with mains voltage electricity

As for extension cords, they can easily be unsafe if they're improperly specced, but assuming you know what you're going to be running, what the worst-case current draw is going to be, and how far away you need the cord, it is possible to run even heavy duty devices without a problem

I once had to figure out an extension cord for a portable AC my family bought (probably the worst case scenario), since we were unsure where it'd have ended up and the outlet situation there. After some calculations to calculate voltage drop and resistance, we ended up ordering a 75ft extension cord with hefty 12 AWG wires in it. In theory, it should be capable of carrying the 15 amps that a standard outlet can supply...

I say in theory because when we went to actually deploy the AC we discovered there was an at-the-time unknown outlet right by the window. Never actually ended up using the cord lmao

I have a problem with discord on steam deck on iPad. When I do the mute option and turn everything off, a triangle with a failure appears, I don't know why it is like that, I authorized everything on discord

The usual steps for authorization failures are first to remove it from the Discord authorization settings and add/test it again by re-adding the action to you Stream Deck. Make sure you have the latest version of the plugin (requires signing into Marketplace in the app) because Discord's API updates semi-regularly including the auth setup. If that fails:

Uninstall Discord, rename the %appdata%\Discord folder to something different, and reinstall it. This usually fixes a repeating authorization issue. Don't delete the old folder in case you need to put it back, or have to get support involved as it contains useful logs. This should prevent Discord from getting tripped up in leftover data from previous authorizations can can cause it to retrigger. At times rebooting between the uninstall and reinstall is also suggested to make sure none of the old files are locked open.

Failing that if it still keeps resetting the authorization, back up your Stream Deck profiles, and note installed plugins, uninstall the app, then rename the %appdata%\Elgato\StreamDeck folder to something like StreamDeck_old - again don't just delete it in case you need to put it back or contact support if there's still issue past that. After that reinstall the app again.

#question-of-the-day got a few of these, actually! One is for working with redstone in Minecraft that's seen a surprising amount of use. If you have a book placed in a lectern, you can use a comparator to read where in the book the current page is turned to, on a range of 1-15 signal strength. If you get a book with 15 pages, that lets you choose any signal strength you want, which is invaluable when working with more complex redstone. Problem is, such books don't actually stack in your inventory, which is quite annoying when you're using a lot of them. The multi action I have just rapid fires through all of the requisite buttons and typing to set up an empty book, and let me tell you it's already saved me so much time in my projects. I love it.

One that I don't use myself (on account on being on a streaming hiatus) is a multi action to spam Twitch Go Live messages in all of the "now live" channels on different servers! Its reliability is... questionable, since it's very timing dependent and it's annoying balancing execution time with reliability, but when it works it saves so much time compared to normal.

Has anyone been permanently banned on tiktok? I was banned for suicide and self harm when I streamed Buckshot roulette when it was popular. Many people were banned for it and not all of us got our live access back, I did around 2 months later.

However, since then my numbers have plummeted. I went from getting thousands of views per stream to maybe 200 total if I stream for 2 hours or more. I see random new accounts have 100s of viewers with mediocre set ups.

If you were in my position, were you able to recover and go back to normal? Or should I give up and try to start over?

I think of you have access still, just be mindful of what you put out there. You never know if you’re one poor choice away from loosing a sponsor’s/partnership scouting you. As a content creator, we are responsible for our voice, and what we put out to our community. If you keep this in mind, games you play included, and see if there is a stream friendly option as well, or if you’re a podcaster, etc… just maybe get those points out there with saying less via “implied” via key-point, and fact check without violating TOS.
