Not many people do live in wasteland.
Mostly healers, darkness hunters, mortuary workers, and rescuers that have outposts around the place. There’s also plenty of dark skykids since they thrive well in the realm.

There’s also a special group of wizard skykids that follow the teachings of the Enchantment spirits on how to harness the power of colored lights. They can be a bit eccentric at times but are very well learned in light magic.

Ironically, all three of my presently-existing Skykid OCs cross Wasteland frequently. Shadow outright lives there (he descended in Wasteland), Rosa visits often to visit Shadow when they're not exploring the world together and to check out (and wrassle) its native wildlife, and Jag often crosses over to get to Vault of Knowledge and Eden.

Anyway, I had an idea i admittedly yoinked from tumblr of resh splitting into two people. The concept in my au still exists but in a much more different form than the initial one.

Also took a lot of inspiration for my design from a lot of designs i saw.

Same! It's largely based on canon Sky, but with a few differences. Those mostly being:

-Not every skykid feels the need to visit Eden. About 9/10 of them can live out their lives without the idea of visiting ever creeping into our heads. (Coincidentally, all of our avatars are skykids who hear the calling.)

-Eden is a one-and-done thing. You go there, you straight-up die. Our skykids do technically reincarnate, but as fresh, new skykids with no memory of their past lives.

-The seasons take place on a timeline. Revival is the earliest, and each season tends to go to a 'focal' skykid, who does the quests. (I don't have many set out, but Revival was Spark, Jag, and nine other skykids, ending with just Jag, Moments was Rosa showing her home to Shadow, Enchantment was Shadow restoring the Ark...)

Hoooh for me, how I think of Eden is:

Sky children who have gone through Eden and reincarnated still carry all but the memories of whatever they did in Eden, from PNR to rebirth.
BUT, their bodies still remember what they went through. So if they go through PNR, even if they think they've never stepped foot in PNR, they instinctively know how to time and avoid the red rains. Making the transition from PNR to rebirth much smoother.

Oh! On that note, a fresh headcanon of mine - PNR is only a point of no return because any skykid who hears the calling to Eden straight-up does not feel the need or want to leave. They know it's their destiny, and they're determined to fulfil it, no matter the consequences.

Okay, headcanon salvage. Jag was one of the initial twelve, and the only survivor of the lot. One - Spark - made their way up to Eden, opening the way for new skykids to descend upon the world, and opening the gateway for spirits to potentially visit the Kingdom, and then reincarnated themselves. Nobody knows which skykid was Spark in a past life, though.

The remaining ten, however, chose to stay behind in the mortal world as winged lights; lending their strength to the skykids who make the pilgrimage up Eden in the hopes that one among them will be able to calm the mountain, as well as to ensure the gateway between the Kingdom and Orbit stays open.

Honestly, the entire rebirth sequence really calls reincarnation to me and the "age of the soul" archetype, like more reincarnations a soul goes through, older it is.

For my skykids, it's an unfortunate necessity. Left unchecked, Eden would get worse and worse and worse, until finally the entire land was decimated, breaking through even Hopeful Steward's shield over the Aviary. The skykids who travel up to try to fix the problem are the only thing keeping it at a balanced level, and their freeing of the skykids who have come before up there keep the cycle of reincarnation going and ensure that the skykid population also stays at a balanced level instead of fewer and fewer skykids descending.

On a slightly brighter note, I think I've brought up this headcanon before, but in case no-one here has seen it:

One headcanon I have that a part of skykid culture is to give names to those things that they have no names for! So even if there's a bit of a language barrier between the spirits and skykids (most communication between the two requires body language), the skykids like them well enough to give them 'titles', of sorts, explaining where the spirits' names come from.

So, a skykid notices a sleepy ship-builder who lives in Prairie. They're Slumbering Shipwright now. A group happens to awaken a peculiar little piebald critter (Oreo) from a monument. No doubt a few skykids out there call him Mischievous Companion. That odd, quiet skykid who appears and disappears sometimes? Wistful Wayfarer. Things like that!
