Im late, but I do rotate-but that's because they got multiple outfits for different occasions. Too many outfits... but they kinda my skysona and I find it fun. But man redoing their ref has been a pain (and have given up trying to finish ref before artfight). + the one you could consider their main (boatswain jacket) has multiple dye variations and they have multiple ways they wear it.

Meanwhile the rest of my ocs are "what if Cannoneer had a doppelganger that was the leviathan", a husk with a crab for a head, and the rest are creatures. so they don't have very much outfit variations unless you count Doppelneer's multiple forms but they pretty much wearing similar stuff just different colors.

I can explain it! So the teams are from art fight! It's an art trading game where artists draw each other's characters. You have two separate teams and whoever gets the most points, wins! There are a lot of creative sky players so there's a lot of sky kids to draw

@candid agate I've removed your recent post. Please note that we strictly prohibit posting artwork that is not your own creation; that includes bases. The images you posted also violated server rules because the characters were not fully clothed.

On a personal level, as an artist I also discourage using bases because that inhibits the development of drawing skills. Bases also bring the authorship of your work into question; If people work from bases and claim the resulting work as original, this is at least in some respects dishonest. Building skills is difficult and takes time, but is very rewarding!

oh! im sorry! everyone's doing it (i participated in some collabs too). i dont think people trace over them (well.. for proportions.. maybe) bases usually come without clothes T T. people choose which one they'll draw and collaborate with eachother.i understand your perspective on how that is unoriginal but this is for fun and we dont claim the base as ours. also there are multiple posts in this channel just like mine.. bases.. without clothes.

I don't think it is inappropriate if a base sketch is not clothed
cause it's not like there are any details for it to count as clothed or not clothed

also i used bases as well to begin smw (still do when i draw on my phone cause i can't get used to drawing with my fingers) but that doesn't mean that you won't learn or become better
and it is true that Kiru wasn't the only one so i think that saying those were reasons it was deleted is a bit unfair
(otherwise you should delete all bases sent that were not made by themselves, mine included)

I understand that many people use bases, which is why I indicated that's a personal judgment, not a matter of server rules. I don't think using bases means you learn nothing, but I have many years of experience as an art student and professional artist and I know firsthand that we can hobble ourselves by using a crutch!

Unclothed bases are a violation of server rules though. We do our best as moderators to apply the same standards to all posts, but there's a limited number of us, and the art channels in particular require close attention and individual inspection of artwork, and there are certainly times when we miss things. That's why we have a reporting channel, so we can all help keep the server safe and running smoothly!

personal opinion, i think using base (in this server) is included in grey area because most of us doesn't have problem using it (no clothes base + especially for collabs). Because i dont see members reporting it nor give negative reaction to anybody who offer bases for collabs

You can absolutely still host art collaborations! I personally host sometimes, especially for end-of-season events. I just choose not to use any bases myself because I find it falls into a bit of a grey area due to the 'no tracing' rule, even if you're drawing your own skid, you're still tracing the pose.

You can definitely do art collabs in your own unique style, whether that means encouraging joiners to get creative with their own imagination for poses, or even including your own original base for your open collaboration.

I agree. It's complicated for moderators more than it is for members, because we have a responsibility to help prevent conflict, and "ownership" is an area of high conflict when it's in doubt. We will not punish members for drawing from bases, but we will discourage (and remove) bases that are shared here (not artwork done from bases). We will not remove bases if those bases are original content, and don't otherwise violate server rules. Clothing is a good question for moderators because yes, adding clothing to bases isn't exactly standard. Moderators will need to use judgment in every case where clothing is not apparent, so in some cases it may be best to share bases privately. We don't want to limit anyone's creativity, so it's a difficult job for us!

the simple answer is that we're humans, we're volunteers, and the ever-evolving culture of each channel sometimes needs updated thought and response from us. Bases have been a topic of conversation among mods and staff, and coming up with a clear and concise policy that's easy for members to follow, and easy for mods to enforce is more difficult than it might sound!

Aside: I never tell anyone off 🙂 I give advice and notify if I think something is a rules violation. My philosophy of moderating is to show everyone how to make the community stronger, not to tear anyone down

i see that artist here love collabs and it inviting us together to draw (connections yk), and most bases online are actually free to use by all (means most have no ownership to it) especially ones in Pinterest which i presume most artist here get the base from

We'll continue to work on policy, but policy changes here happen very slowly. If we ever contradict ourselves or each other, please excuse our weaknesses. The goal is always to give people space to play and not to limit anyone's creativity, but also to protect members. And I even give a little bit of extra guidance sometimes that might help someone be a more responsible and informed artist.

Speaking of which, pinterest is a hotbed of art theft, and I know from personal experience that art you find there may be 100% against the wishes of the artist. Even bases! Some people sell bases, so it's possible that even bases you find there are stolen.

And a note about "rules violations:" the rules here are very strict, but don't always apply elsewhere. I've had to remove artwork that I think is wonderful and worth sharing. There are good spaces for some things that don't belong here!

thats super fair!! my only thing i wanted to mention is that the darks in what you draw also seem pretty light, as if i had my brightness really high. the composition of your subject matter is great, and i think your accuracy and feeling in what u draw is gorgrous!! i personally think if youre looking for places to improve, id focus on making your 'darks' darker.
i hope this was kind and not discouraging at all, i really appreciate your posts :> and the brightness they have to them isnt necessarily a bad thing either, it makes it feel very airy

Yeahh on the darkness thing, it kind of annoys me too but unfortunately my pencils are very stubby and short now even with sharpening, and it hurts my arm to try and make something darker anyway so I just try to avoid blackness sometimes but well that’s not really possible and… you get the picture
On that note though thank you?? This was not discouraging again I really really appreciate it

if i could suggest something, have you looked into pencils with "B" in the name? theyre made so the graphite flows looser and you dont have to press as hard to get darker tones. 5b is the darkest i thiiink?

I haven’t really, but that’s mostly because I just haven’t bothered to buy new graphite pencils through this entire challenge, but I’ll definitely take it into consideration when I need to!
