so, it begins with some speculation

i think before the CoL came, the Elders were in charge and were disconnected from the light aka Megabird. this led to their rule being, well, corrupt

the ancestors prayed for help. so megabird revealed the prophecy caves and basically went like « your saviour will complete these trials » (ysee thats the prophecy). then after several failed attempts on the part of the ancestors, megabird just sent her child, the child of light, to complete the trials and become prince.

light is returned to the kingdom ! but it comes at a cost. if thé CoL ages, they’ll become indifferent and corrupt just like the elders did, and the kingdom will fall. it’s the elders’ responsibility that the CoL remains a child. however, they don’t do that, and selfishly let the CoL become indifferent and grow up simply to expand their industry and power.

as the CoL reaches adulthood, they take proper charge for themselves, and becomes the infamous king we all love to hate. the elders begin turning to darker and darker sources of power and technology, corrupting themselves and the rest of the kingdom along with it. what was once a holy temple becomes a factory.

they don’t need to worship megabird anymore when they have themselves as gods.

eden is closed off from the public, now only accessible by the elders to further their hubristic gains. one elder however resists this, the isle elder. the ferryman turns to megabird again, and rallies the ancestors to take up arms and fight against the corrupted elders.

however, some ancestors wish to defend the elders and their ventures, so they stand guard at the base of the mountain while the revolutionary ancestors attempt to push into the vault and eventually to the gate of eden.

the elders learn of this attack, and in a last-stitch effort try to overpower the eden diamond with the powers of the elements. the last touch is the CoL, who sacrifices themselves for power.

it was all in vain, however, for the diamond explodes with the power of a hydrogen bomb. everything, everyone, except a few lucky creatures, are destroyed. all that’s left of the CoL, the failed saviour, is their tiny hunched body, encased within the diamond.

for thousands of years, the kingdom is a no man’s land, too dangerous to even set foot on. but as time passes, the dark radiation dissipates. and this is when megabird sends a new child, the opposite to the CoL, with a dark shell and a light soul. balance, something she regrets she didn’t understand sooner.

this is more of a fun story than a hard-and-fast theory, but take it as you will

To add to that, what if the mega bird separated its first CoL after around the world of Sky to try to save it. The new CoL was to collect him and help him get home. All the statues were every mistake that has happened and how he was punished. However, the original CoL would never go back to being one. Stuck as many because of that wasn't strong enough to fully return to the mother bird. So, he always returned to eden and always tried to reach his creation but was never able to.
