Both the CoL and our Skid were born from King, but from the two halves of the King. This makes the CoL and our Skid being the two sides of the same coin here.

Ok so my theory was they were working on a way back to the stars and somewhere in between the pipes in wasteland burst and some of them got infected by the waste and turned dark and afterwords the darkies went and attacked their friends and they all got into a fight in the waste land aka main palace and then scholars or smart bois took the giant crystal to their research institution or something like that to do expirements on it so they could figure out how to make the darkies back to normal and they couldnt so they then started to try to find a way to get back home quickly by using the crystal which woukd be why everything in eden would be gone or exploded and why there were scholar statues and why there is a big tower peice left in the sky before orbit but all the people got blew out of eden and nobody went home and thats when the crystal went out of control like when a circuit gets overloaded it started falling apart but was still stable enough to keep that tower afloat.
Idk what the big thing in eden is called so i used crystal. And also just a loose theory
Also the elders gave up on trying to go back to the stars and decided to try to protect their new home land but we know how that ended

my basic understanding is that the Light was infinite and united as a sort of collective unconscious, but the darkness came and the elders were scattered to the clouds to protect them from annihilation
they each represent aspects of society (wisdom, creation, innovation, sportsmanship, loyalty, tradition) and are united by the king
the spirits living in the clouds rejoice in having the elders to guide them, and the elders teach them how to harness the light in various ways and build up their kingdom
however their king wants to return to the light, and will do anything to get there
they form the power crystals which hold offerings of light (maybe a way for people to use light without being a child/elder of light, eg the boats for flying, etc) but the power crystals deal with darkness imperfectly

the pipes are put in place to remove darkness from the city to deal with the excess of darkness from the power crystals, but when eden is activated the pipes all break, everything gets polluted, etc
the eye of eden itself looks like a power crystal that maybe shattered? and it was comparable to a nuclear meltdown
im guessing the eye of eden power crystal was an attempt to fly the entire city back up to the light
but instead the whole thing shattered and they ruined the light's attempt to give them a heaven on earth
again this is just what ive gathered from studying cutscenes and the environment so i might have missed details
the spirits im guessing survived the initial explosion from eye of eden and wandered, trying their best to continue living before the darkness spread too far
the children of light sent by the light as 'angels' to bring the pieces of light back to the whole, and the imprints of children of light you see around are those who lost hope/weren't strong enough to continue

Darkness looms over the horizon. Ashes, dark matter, light fades everywhere I see. I will not let the beautiful city Eden fall into ruins, I will defend it to my last fragment. And the legacy of my light will not perish. I write to you, hoping that my will ignite your will to survive. Dark days are ahead of us.
