In my mind, the spirits memories are either a special memory to them, or a point in time that they would travel to Eden to ascend, or that was the point that the shattering occurred, and trapped them in the realms.
All of them have their own implications, and Duets cellist's seems to imply that it wasn't when the shards first fell, as they have further memories after that point.
Equally it could well be the last memory they recorded before the shards fell, and over time became the husks we see as dark plants surround that memory, and the light becomes "calcified" into a solid husk.
One other clue may be the Steward in the Aviary new starting scenes, as the Steward seemed to know that something was going to happen at the place their husk was, and that leaving a candle there would be important to whatever happened there. And as it turns out, that's where new players land and get their candle for the first time, and the Steward is the first spirit they interact with, as a guide to the rest of the realms.

I’ll settle with the idea they just didn’t want us to have 16ac each Eden run

Or is the size scaling in this comparison just inaccurate?

It's less about direct causation, and more about that some things have some sort of relation. It's about Themes, and context clues. In order to reach into the deeper subtexts of Sky being able to think about these subtleties are really helpful even if it's difficult to conceptualize sometimes.
