also I got bored and decided to break down the lore poems from season of shattering based on how I interpreted them- so if anyone wants to maybe see it I very much wanna share it’s just super long lol (like above the 2000 character limit long, but I have nitro so I’m good lol)

First poem (simplified with synonyms) — Krill
“Climbing towards darkness
A distorted reflection
The hunger relentless to satisfy
Insatiable hunger”
• First line implies something going from being a creature of light to one of darkness (supporting theories and implied in-game cave drawings that krill used to be mantas)
• Second line also supports krill previously being mantas or at least light creatures
• Third and fourth line simply shows that with darkness comes either a literal or metaphorical hunger (depending on the creature) that can’t be satisfied

Second poem (simplified with synonyms) — Whale
“The distant call out of reach
Echoes swallowed in a scouring(everlasting/always moving?) silence
Empty light tossing the fragments
of a spirit split apart in the break (either meaning a disturbance or the shattering)”
• This whole poem seems to callback to the beginning of the game in the isle, where it states the stars fell and darkness came, but this can probably be interpreted in other ways

Third poem (simplified with synonyms) — Shattering
“Empty at the precipice
Unseen fractures crumble in the rift/void
The stars under endless weight
Reaching to light and to dark
Carrying the memory of all that was held
In the final moment of shattering”
• First line seems to refer to the very end of eden being empty with only a large hole/tear in what I’ve always assumed to be a layer of storm clouds surrounding eden, but given that this relates to the past, alongside the rest of the poem, I think it refers to [whatever eden used to be] getting consumed by a void of darkness that crumbled apart into the storm we know it to be now
• Second line is part of why I assume the void crumbles and turns into a storm, or maybe the storm partially breached into the void, which would explain why after you die in eden you head towards a beam of light that looks similarly to the one coming out the diamond at the end of eden
• Third line seems like another reference to the stars falling; the “weight” of darkness (presumably the darkness coming from eden) forced the stars to give in and fall, comparable to if you put something heavy on top of a shelf that wasn’t built to hold that much weight and allowing whatever you placed on top of it to fall down as well
Third line seems to refer to the stars and spirits calling out for help? could be interpreted differently
• Fourth line represents spirits memories or maybe the season guide from season of shattering, or both
• Fifth line maybe represents the storm breaking into part of the void, the fallout after the war, and/or the darkness taking over the kingdoms of sky

I think everyone isn't so "shaded out" in canon as they are in game, but I definitely do think that lighting strangers is canon. Like, everyone is a blur with the person next to them until you light their candle and suddenly they stand out from the crowd

Plus, it's a very integral part to the game and how you interact with people. You can choose to remain distant with someone even if you run an entire realm with them or light them to hang out for a few moments before they log off. You're extending yourself out to the other person both figuratively and literally, I'm pretty sure it's canon even disregarding the whole gameplay aspect of it (as in, less things to render and also being easier to spot friends when in a giant crowd)

For me the "shadow people" are more like real life. When you're in a large crowd of people, you don't always pay attention to each one, and you don't relate to all of those people. They are there and around you, but at the end of the day you don't necessarily remember them. They are like shadows.
So "enlightening" is something like saying hello, getting in touch with a person, and in that way making them stand out from the crowd. People like that are sometimes remembered more than anyone else because you dealing with them.
If you don't see them for a very long time or don't meet them again, they're just as "shadowy" as the others. Just like in the game, the enlightened players become shadows again.
Friends on the other hand, stay enlightened because they have a close bond with you, friendship, you remember them and you don't forget them.

At least that's how I see it in game. :3

The current lore-thread I’ve been diving into recently is tracking what the devs call the civilization/world (as to us, they are deeply intertwined) of Sky. The two main terms are “Realms” and “Kingdom”, with little visible distinction between them. However, these are not the only ones — as long as a term sounds like it’s referring to the Sky world, it counts!

I’ve been tracking #news and recent Passage promo posts on the website so far, but will hopefully expand to #beta-announcements, dev messages, and the official Sky website soon as well if I have enough time! Some of these instances are hard to track down for various reasons. Maybe their site doesn’t have a search function, they’re low down on the official social media page, or so on… with that in mind, if you find any, please let me know! I’d love to compile these into a graph eventually.

I’ve already found some really interesting information so far, including disproving a relatively common theory, but I sadly don’t have time to talk about it right now.

regarding the sky kids lighting each other thing, this is mostly a headcanon since nothing i know from the canon lore backs this up, but i like to think since the candle fire comes from within sky kids, touching candles with another sky kid is like joining your soul with theirs together for a moment, and you instantly become familiar with them as if youve known them for a while now, vaguely, somehow

The candle fire can actually be seen without taking it out on a sky kid, it usually appears as a bead of light on your sky kid's chest and I'm pretty sure is usually referred to as your skykid's "core." It's probably where all our winged light is stored and also visibly de-lights when your skid is extinguished. I think there's some tomcept art regarding what you've said but I would absolutely not be able to find it and my memory's faulty so take it with a grain of salt

i like to think sky lore is like a short story called “the egg” by andy weir, where some guy dies and meets god, who tells him the meaning of life - every single human on earth is the same person being reincarnated over and over - every time they hurt someone, they hurt themself; every time they were kind to someone, they were kind to themself. that way they can live through every experience in their universe, and when theyve finally lived enough, they become born as a god. and the story of sky in my headcanon is similar.

All souls are part of the Megabird. Each soul cycles through the Human and Sky World, gathering experience before returning to the Megabird. We are all one and one is us all.

through cycles of death and rebirth megabird lives through and is the experience of every soul there is in the universe so that it, we, can have the responsibility and compassion of a proper god, and thats how we (talking in character rn) achieve enlightenment

Oh I actually have hcs on this! I imagine spirits to have varying levels of memory, since we guide them through fragments of their memory, their recollection may be not the best, I imagine if theyre part of a group, someone else might remember their name for them, but if they feel too disconnected with it, or no one else remembers, they adopt their spirit title as a moniker, go by a new name or some other name, some of my spirit hcs prefer their title to their name for reasons

like my storyteller goes by “Sock” based off Sock & Buskin (the comedy and tragedy masks), with the joke being they picked the mask opposite to the one they wear, but they could also just refer to themself as storyteller!

I imagine most spirit card tips refer to things before they had passed, since usually theyre before we meet them/refer to past events/just getting to know them, so it could be from before they died, but also oddball could just remember their name, or doesn’t but someone else does so that’s why it takes them a while to respond if you wanna get silly with it instead of them just being inattentive!

The pity room can be explained in two ways.
From a gameplay perspective:
This is a place for the player to know they may have another chance to do something in the game, while the character can canonically continue in the story of the game as if they did not fail. I have reason to believe the pity room may have more lore to it, based on what the older version of the lore was about, and according to interviews by the devs in the past.
From a lore perspective:
A skykid carries both light and darkness. While a skykid can cleanse darkness, they can still be lost to the darkness (like a candle).
Finding a winged light there is not only because of giving the skykid their light before returning to sky. This may also be a glimpse into the origin of skykids.

Here you can see the two halves coming together and becoming a Skykid. A hybrid of both Light and Darkness.

In an interview with Jenova Chen, he described the play through layout of Dawn. This was during a time where the realm was undergoing changes. While the older version of Dawn may not be in the current game, and likely not applicable anymore. The parts of the lore that does carry over may be explored.

Now that I think about it we know literally nothing about the Eders other than there place in the sky hierarchy and there region they rule over so to be honest, the elders are very mysterious in nature we didn’t even know their extent of their powers

To be fair, the elders rarely get as much attention with updates as the ancestors spirits and the realms.
Any lore info we got about the elders through the seasons were from seasons of Enchantment, Prophecy, Flight, Shattering and Aurora.
from the 17/18 seasons (if you would count Rhythm twice), less than half of them expands on the elders.

The most noteworthy lore drop of the elders were from season of Shattering.

I think we can get some looks into their personality’s if we look at the realms and cutscenes. Environmental details like the gravestones lining The Valley twins temple is super intersting to me. Shows to me the twins are close enough to their people where they share their temple to be a final resting place for ancestors.

This, this can be the reason why having a mask is important for the skykids. While not all ancestors may have not needed to communicate with spirits for various reasons. The skykids needed that to find and help ancestor spirits.

The “pity room” in Eden has a similar, void-like background with a mirrored floor. There are 2 other locations in the game in which we see this: the final Abyss quest when you are swallowed by the dark creature, and the Ancient Memories.

I think the darkness represents being overwhelmed by darkness.

When we lose all our winged light, we become a “child of darkness”, and only when we gain light do we become a child of light. I think they updated it because it doesn’t make sense for a being that came from the stars to be absent of light.

Some theories suggested clay, wax, stone, and even a magical body that appears and functions like natural skin, but cannot burn.

This is possibly (not proven though) what the devs intended for this to be a one time thing for us to do and not have to repeat again.
Similar to us reliving non-season spirit memories, getting the message that they would be at the temple, and yet they would not be there.
Which I do hope would someday be implemented that we can see them at the temple any time we relive them, and not just with the first time we do it.

Well, Winged Light are called “Lost Memories” in games, so that gives some clues

From my lore document:
“Winged Lights are figures made of pure light, scattered around the kingdom. They stay in one spot, and cannot move, but they gaze up at the Sky until they are collected by the Sky children. They are made purely of light because when a Sky kid picks up a Winged light, they gain extra cape capacity from it, allowing the child to fly higher. It is notable that Wing Buffs in the Eye of Eden function a very similar purpose, implying there’s some link between the two.

It has been said by developers that we have a close relationship to the figure represented in these Winged Lights.

Winged Lights can be seen from far away by a circular light flare, tipped off with 4 points to make a subtle diamond shape as well. This is the same light flare that can be seen surrounding the top of the Eye of Eden in the distance of most realms. The shape is reminiscent of a parhelion.

Winged Light is represented by a star with wings in most murals and illustrations. It also appears this way when it is dropped by a Sky Child.”

It says Lost Memories, but of who? It could be of another Skykid, perhaps a wingless one, like the one we see in Ushering Stargazer’s memory.

Winged light has some lore.

Half of it was lost to the Light Awaits lore. (meaning the lore from back then may not apply to the current game's lore. Either because it would have changed, or be left out. Until we can prove what the current lore has to say, it would have to be taken with a grain of salt)

What we do have as lore from them is as follows:
They were once called stars
They were renamed to Winged Light. However the star reference is still on the table as the change to the Dawn introduction was updated. And the older version of the intro is still valid in some parts (as a dev confirmed).

They were referenced a lot in the season of Performance lore (in the play)
Which strengthened the Star idea (stars fell and some of them became skykids/children of the light)
There is more, though I don't know much of it off the top of my head (there are images of the text made on this channel though).

In Light Awaits, they were once seen as a spirit like being that game the skykid's their light and skykids were once able to rely on the spirits to gain more energy. This was changed not long after, and was a feature that was scrapped a long time ago.
Back in the day of Light Awaits, skykids used to use spirit memories (emotes) for their capes. losing light meant losing emotes.
This was changed to become the winged light system. That way, there is still a cost to losing the light, but not with the emotes.

The ‘includes Isle’ column on the data sheet is largely irrelevant now, but I started it because I was wondering if the usage of ‘kingdom’ excluded Isle. Based on some announcements about the first four seasons, where one spirit from each showed up in Isle, it does not.

This means that Isle is 100% considered a part of the kingdom proper and the possibility of it seceding, or its elder being exiled, is highly unlikely.

I MISREAD THIS ORIGINALLY, sorry tired. I lost the date data for realms, but I remember the spike was because a lot of support notes got updated around that time. (Support notes are like FAQ questions, stuff you’d search in the official helpshift site like ‘what is eye of Eden?’)

Something very interesting I learned from collecting this data is that sometime in between November 18, 2019 and July 20, 2021, Eden started being considered a realm.

What I mean by this is that — before July 20 — devs would talk about the ‘six realms’ or the ‘six kingdoms’, either implicitly or explicitly excluding Eden. For example, they’d talk about spirits from the first four seasons as being ‘present in each kingdom’, excluding Eden because no spirits can be found there. July 20, 2021 is the first instance of a dev (Ash!) saying ‘seven realms’, a change that would later be mirrored in the newest intro. (By the time this change occured, the phrasing ‘kingdoms’ had been entirely phased out).

The mystery about why that could have happened and what it means is something I hope to figure out.

Well from what I’ve interpreted from the dialog at the beginning
That the children of light are made from stars and when they die their mind and spirit remains until an elder is able to send us back to become stars being the spirits case in game
And with the ending I interpreted that we couldn’t pass on because there was no elder to do the task and same with the spirits there so their body’s remain along with the spirit doomed to be stuck there same with us as the payer but since we made the sacrifice to try to save them we are destined to come back to life to do it over again

But that’s my interpretation but from the ancient ancestor in the isles of Dawn mixed with everything else my understanding from the story is that

Everyone (all the spirits) came from stars and once they somewhat settled in the isles of dawn they soon discovered they could do magic and use the power of light to make lanterns and weapons eventually being able to make boats so they could fly up to the skies to reach out for more light to expand their kingdoms (assuming because most probably couldn’t fly like most since very early do spirits have wings) but at some point one of the people gained the power of the elements and become the ultimate ruler and would expand the kingdoms into smaller realms to reside in but ended up not being utilized witch makes it why there isn’t alot there.

as they expanded the ruler used the magic gem things that we see in the vault of knowledge to create the big one like we see in Eden in my head I believe it was to conserve the people who passed instead of having them pass on and leave their knowledge behind and with light there is shadow and I believe after that those shadow creatures where normal creatures and became corrupted by the GAINT eden gem because I believe something went wrong and that’s why some of the creatures look decayed and corrupted in a way just looking at the crabs and giant shrimp things.

as it spread they had to try to fight back hence the land scape in golden wasteland but failed so they children where the only ones left and tried to stop it but died and got stuck since there where no elders left to move them on so as we the player where born from light we are destined to stop it but fail every time being reborn every time to come back stronger

Okay I need lore on this it’s so sad. Awhile ago I asked what are the theories on what the winged light children are and my favorite response was it’s little pockets of energy/magic left by the king when he was a little boy. BUT today I did the shard event and the memory I got was the eden crystal and all around it were the guardians being blown away by it. At the very top of the crystal is the winged light child but this one is different. This one counts as one winged light for you but there were two light children there holding each other. What are the theories on lore here? If one is the king as a little boy then who is the one holding him? What’s that thing above their head? I’m not sure but my thought is maybe this was the exact moment the eden shard appeared in the world of sky. It landed causing everyone around to get blown away by it and since the king is the one that caused this to happen that’s why he is on top but idk 🤷‍♀️

That could be how I view wl in general though. One of my friends believes they’re memories from us from the past (as I roughly remember).

The wl after we die in eden changes to be our height, which made me think it wasn’t another being exactly. Like to think it’s a wl another skykid sent down and gave to us to ascend, just how we did for the other statues, continuing the cycle which I think fits well.

What if the mountain of Eden isn't a mountain at all, but a pointed cloud that we are actually under when we are in the Golden Wasteland.
Throughout Eden it is surrounded by cloud, and though it goes up, we never actually see a mountain. It is also internally called Storm.
That mountain we follow is not an actual rocky mountain as we expect it to be from as afar as when we first see it after Dawn, but a giant storm cloud drawn in be the light at its summit.

My personal theory is during the war the elders tried to gather all their light to form a great power diamond, but it ended up being too much for them to control, called too much darkness in its shadow, and blocked the route to ascention.
I don't think all the ancestors died at that point, but the blast cut through the entire set of realms, tearing them apart.
Some survived and had to salvage the remaining light from the older areas (abyss crew), others tried terraforming new lands with light (enchantment), and others lived out knowing they could never ascend, and their remains were trapped in the land, until hope returned from the Light.
The Elders became trapped in a timeless void between light and darkness, and only by saving the spirits of those in their realm could escape to also return to the Light.
We are the shattered part of that hope.

Have you ever thought about the great mass of clouds? I think they are related to that event that killed most living beings of light. I think the whole world was once like the Golden Wasteland. Without sunlight, the light can't be fed into the light creatures like Mantas. As of course, they mostly died or migrated somewhere safe. I can go into detail of the Light Theory in Sky if you want.

the first part is the same as you, but I think what makes the spirits and elders die because of an unexpected earthquake and constant shard rain, once the creatures are hit by the shards (especially the dark creatures), they become aggressive and hit the spirits very actively. Imagine the dark plants became large horrible piranhas and swallows the light creatures and the ancestors

But the reason why everything seems normal from now is because the Megabird trying to restore the realms with Light

After the restoration, the dark piranhas turn to normal dark plants, and the mantas which had been swallowed by piranhas get stuck with the dark plants

This might be completely wrong, but what if the diamond in Eden was the heart of the deceased Eden Elder (supposing there was one). I noticed that spirits have orbs to be lit inside of them. But well if that was the case, where are the "hearts" of the other elders.

Anyways I agree with this, i see light and dark as a balance. But it annoys me a little that many folks don’t see that and see it as light bad dark evil.

Like the king krill (fannon name) is seen as evil, and even was called a monster in beta when they were a simply a wild hungry animal who was trying to survive

Side tangent but i had this whole convo before but if sharks were ever added in sky, I hope they’re a light creature for this exact reason. As folks will automatically assume light = good, dark = bad, and sharks are demonized enough in media already.

Colour is heavily symbolic in a game like Sky, but I also agree that I don't see light as good, dark as evil no in between sort of thing. For me personally, I feel like dark and darkness represents the decay of a world long gone or the consequence of the actions of one who went too far.

The whole good and evil trope is everywhere so it tends to be the thing most people first jump to when they think of light and dark. I feel like Light and Dark in sky is heavily important (it's a game that emphasises a lot on colours after all), but it isn't something that should be just interpreted as just good or evil.

I honestly think spirit memories just vary: some are import, some seem like trivial things. I think the point of spirit memories are to give insight to said charater and somtimes contribuite to the world as to help make it feel more alive and flush it out

As far as the canon is concerned, the elders seemingly were not born. And even if they were, they may have came into existence just as the stars have.
They may look human, but are far from it.

Random thoughts coming in again:

What if krills were never actual animals, but sentries/patrols made by the inhabitants of the sky kingdom? Considering how Eden looks, it seems to have been technically advanced. Currently krills are only found within Wasteland and Eden. They patrol in a constant set path, and attack anything in site. It just seems like they act more like robots than animals. What if krills used to help protect wasteland/eden, but decayed away due to time after the kingdom fell, to the point where they cannot distinguish individuals anymore and will target anything they see as an enemy (whether it is or not). Crabs on the otherhand, could have been a byproduct of the decay. They could have adapted/mutated to fit the new environment they find themselves in (which in the case of wasteland and eden, seem hostile currently). Maybe they only attack the players, not because they are "evil" but because they are instinctual to be hostile to anything they see as a threat to their own survival. In this case, the player themselves is trying to clear away darkness, which is the crab's current home. This could be seen as a threat by the crabs, and they attack the player as a result. Shard crabs could be a mutant/evolved version of the normal crab firstly because they only come from Eden, and secondly because they have traits that cover over the normal crabs weakness (deep calls).

Honestly the krill theory could be falsified due to the existence of the king krill, and I wanna look into that a bit more. But personally I like the crab theory.

Adding on to the krill theory, their current appearance could also be a result of the decay. Once beautifully built sentries, the outer shell decayed over time, to the point where only the inner skeleton remains intact

The pitch black appearance could be by design, or could have been due to the pollution changing the original colour of the skeleton
