I’m mostly coming here out of curiosity, and my monthly visit to eden involved far more exploration than usual this time around while trying to find the map shrines for Eden. Notably, me sitting around the final cave and really listening to the sounds of Eden for once! They’re rather chilling in my mind compared to the rest of the game, but Eden is already a massive tonal shift from most of the world either way.

Whatever the case, I’ve played a few other games with ‘secret’ sounds like this, and with those sounds came loads upon loads of theories about what these sounds meant (I’m sure some of you Switch players probably know at least one of these games - which I find the sounds to be kinda similar. But that’s not the point). I’m sure I’m not the first one to find this, and probably not the first to bring it up here, but I’m curious as to what people’s theories are!

From one of the many things I hear of it, it’s one of the few times we hear an actual voice in the game aside from the start and the end of it. Or, at least some sort of creature making a sound. I don’t know, it drones on for too long for me to think it’s the sound of structures barely holding up in the storm.

TLDR, weird sounds at the end of Eden, other games that have secret sounds have loads of theories that come with said sounds, and I wanna hear what other people think about it.

i always thought it was the eden elder, trapped in the storm and calling out to anyone who could hear them. sort of like a distress song, but also a lament of the fall of the kingdom and the calamity.

I can see how they’d be nice to listen to after a bit, it just caught me off guard this time since I’m usually too scared of hitting wl taken away to stop and listen. I can definitely see that, and now with some new lore really pushing the elders existence outside of the wasteland statues and vault mural, it would be another nice little detail about the elders story. It would also fit with the theme, if it is a voice, on the only human voices we hear always singing.

And it would also be really, really cool if the light around us was the music we hear around the game as it tries to communicate with us. Though music is usually a storytelling method and not exactly it’s own character in many games, that would be a really cool little detail considering how music and performances seemed to be a major part of society as the kingdom reached its peak. Wouldn’t be too shocking if those harmonies were embedded deep within the stuff that helps make up the world.

The memory one is a low pulsing hum that sounds rather mechanical, something that will simply continue on its cyclic way exactly as it must. The one from Eden itself is richer, almost a voice singing its low note in some places but more of a groan in others. There are some sounds of rocks crumbling along with it, but I think those are part of Eden’s normal rockfall cycle?

The humming could be previous skykids who have already turned to statues in pnr. Aka the little blue lights we turn I to when we die before our friends when doing an Eden run together. They can't see us but perhaps a skykids could perceive us through sounds like humming

Forest is a realm where we see the usage of dark stone, otherwise known as diamond batteries, the usage of dark stone (at least in the concept arts) are informing us that these diamonds "corrupts ancestors" especially since Forest was the realm where diamonds are made (along with GW before it became a wasteland)
Some theories speculate that the making of diamonds is why the rain in Forest is known as "acid rain"

As for why the Shattering Shards seem to be stronger in Forest is ||not because Resh (Eden King) divorced Rain (Forest Elder)|| because darkness in Forest is still growing and the Shattering Shards use this as an advantage to spread this further (+ rain included in some shard eruptions)
As for the reason why Shards in GW doesn't seem to be as strong as Forest is because darkness has already corrupted most of the realm (in my personal opinion).

You can actually find in game examples of this in the golden wasteland’s treasure reef! I’m fairly certain that some murals in certain areas explain why some creatures are trapped.

I think you need both that and light to ascend- the statues in Eden have too much of the red crystal but lost all their light in the process, which is what we give them. This is supported by the post-“death” room in pnr where we are dark (after being pelted by red crystals ourselves) and have to reunite with our light half in order to ascend- the red crystals and the light aren’t enough on their own, we need both.

I've been summoned lol.... there are a few levels of written texts in sky, whether they are actual, tangible languages, we don't know. We don't even know if they were spoken. The first level would be the murals, which is more of a rudimentary story telling method. Secondly, there's the bell engraving symbols, which may very well be the inscription of a prayer or a mantra. Then, there's the symbols in the archive in vault, (haven't rlly studied those yet), and lastly there's the texts in the final elder cutscene which we only have one example of.

why is the area before the prairie temple referred to as the villages? it's pretty empty, the only area that could be referred to as a home in any manner would be shipwright's little area in the middle island.

I like to think the Storm is receding, losing strength, hence new seasonal areas revealed by shifting clouds, so perhaps someday the clouds concealing the rest of the Prairie village will recede too.

I also think this is a really neat progression because you go from independent architecture being exclusively for temples, to it being for temples and other sacred buildings, to it being for refineries, to it being for houses — almost like, the temples are less and less important and distinct, and what makes them unique is expanding everywhere else as well.

The concept of ancestors taking up no space in Isle and not changing the environment at all is also really interesting to me because it could be seen as another piece of evidence for the whole theory that everyone in that realm was mostly nomadic, and didn’t have permanent homes

I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit especially because of switch trailer and… I think my general concept so far is that ancestors Did come from somewhere else in the world. [there used to be this idea that the ‘previous place’ was in orbit but I don’t think that’s true.] if I had to guess what pushed them out it would be darkness but… I’m wondering what the story is there…

I did have this idea that the elders are who led them to the new land, kinda like using constellations as guides for where to go but in the most literal sense

There’s a lot of reasons why people may move or migrate — fleeing poor conditions like war, environmental decay, or destitution; seeking better economic prospects; searching for stability for their families; or spiritual pilgrimage.

I emphasize pilgrimage because we have one place in the world that one could call sacred — Eden. Of course, it isn’t now, but it may have been the holy land where ancestors and light creatures could ascend to the Light. We are all one with the light, after all, and the light cycle must flow. Seems most of the light creatures we see in game are headed towards Eden, so perhaps ancestors did as well, maybe as they were dying to ensure their spirits could ascend or simply to pay reverence.

It ascending people is kind of a byproduct of that, the main sacredness is that it flows directly back into the light cycle and is one of the strongest points in it

Some nomadic tribes in Africa actually tend(ed?) to circle the same spots seasonally to follow the rains; they sow crops then let nature take its course while traveling to other areas, and find the crops grown the next year.

Maybe it's the same for ancestors, temples could have been gradually built and upkept through cycles of rebirth, like beacons to show the way. Kind of like cairns you find ascending some mountains, but buildings you leave offerings in as you go.

Maybe the end of that nomadic lifestyle marked the disconnect between ancestors and the Light as they sedentarized and built sturdy buildings meant to withstand use year-round (see my light=transience and change & darkness=stubbornness vs change idea); maybe they feared a "reset" would make their current life meaningless, and they didn't want to let go of it...

Sky takes some, but not solely, Christian inspiration, given by the name Eden (which, in Japanese, is called Original Sin). I think it references more the myth of Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden, where humankind strayed from God’s command and had to leave because they were impure from their sin.

To be fair I don't really consider food in my headcanons but we do have it confirmed ancestors grew stuff (scarecrow farmer) and hunted (dismayed hunter, anxious angler), so it's likely they traded for ressources they didn't find in their environment easily, like us.

My headcanon is that they painted the stars and mantas on the ark so that them & the rest of the crew could see them, even when they were stuck in the empty and desolate Wasteland

meaning the thought of them seeing each other again makes me Very bittersweetly happy

because of mural reasons I think the guide died first, in the crash itself. I headcanoned that their spirit stuck around as long as it could trying to do things to help the others survive, like scaring away birds from scare’s farm, but the darkness meant they couldn’t manifest fully so no one really knew it was them — but they watched everything happen

yeah hypoglycemia is really awful, I deal with it a lot and have passed out from it a few times (hypothyroidism means my body doesn’t process hunger at the same speed it process sugar so it causes Issues) and it’s one of those things where you don’t really grasp it’s all because you’re hungry, until you actually eat or on the verge of passing out because the Badness happens so slowly

Glucose pills/tablets, usually. If you have reactive hypoglycemia your body feels worse if given typical cane sugar so you have to eat it in the form your body uses right away in my experience (I know this only very loosely, sorry for any medical inaccuracies)
