I like to think skykids have like a flame recognition system going on – as long as you share flames, you know who that person is no matter what they look like, hence how skykids (and ourselves as players) can recognize their friends who change their appearance. this also enables skykids to recognize the voice and calls of other skids at a distance. the more often skids share their flames, the stronger that recognition.

skykids who don't want to be recognized or keep their identity a secret don't share their flames. in my fic, my protag accidentally shares flames with a capeless skid who's been in hiding but led the moth protag through the Wasteland when they both go to light Dusk Elder's alter. even though they don't even exchange names, that skid dashes away. the protag spents much of the fic looking for their guide.

been wondering that cos we have ancestor spirits who wear head coverings outside of the Vault (Admiring Actor, Modest Dancer) so that was a thing in ancestor culture. but we don't know whether they regarded that as fashion or religious adherence or some sort of practicality. yet most base-game Vault spirits wear one, so perhaps in the Vault it was an ordained uniform.

Ash has also said before that Vault Elder's headcovering is based off irl headwraps (hence why comparing it to food is inappropriate and offensive). to me it's reminiscent of some hijabs Muslims wear for a religious purpose. so it's a wonder whether there was some spiritual purpose behind the headcovering that was stronger within the Vault and that Vault Elder followed. no other Elder wears one, so either there is some variation in the religion they alll shared or the Elders don't share the same spiritual beliefs.

Given how nebulous of a figure the king is compared to literally everyone else, I find that overbearing and fruitless speculation about the king tiresome. Sure, the king is appealing, but we have characters in the game we can actually look and interact with and have hints to ponder about. The king is way less tangible than literally everyone else.

This actually just got me thinking about something very interesting!:

Do sky kids have proper blood familes or the concept of a blood-family in relation to themselves?

All skykids were all born by the Megabird, none of them are related by blood beyond being the same species. So logically you'd imagine that they wouldn't, right? But at the same time it's because of the fact that they were all born of the same creator that it's possible they COULD consider each other blood-family.

But at the same time since there are few of them & all of them being very young it's possible that they haven't even yet considered the distinction of Blood-Family vs. Stranger, as they don't yet have a need for it.

But on the other hand, thanks to the existence of the ancestor spirits, it's possible that they DO have a concept of strangers, with them considering other sky kids as blood-family & the ancestors as strangers, & all of them together as the same "kind" of creature, regardless if that's true or not.

But it's also entirely possible that they don't consider ANYTHING blood-family, with the spirits & sky kids they meet either falling into the category of friend or stranger, but never blood-family.

A seeker may be similar to a scout as both words imply a person is foraging ahead of the group. Aside from the familiar pattern on their masks. The spirits seemingly have vastly different personalities, although that may be an unfair observation given the limitations of the Lightseeker spirits at the time of their season.
Perhaps the memory may give more insight?
That said, based on the emotes, both spirits do have a playful aesthetic.

Doublefive Light Catcher > Daydream Forester
a Light catcher may not be a real life profession, however when looking at the spirits of Daylight Prairie, one can deduce a light catcher to be a person that is skilled in gathering and and managing perishable precious resources (namely Light and Trees). As for Forester, the word may imply that the spirit has been taking care of plants in the forest. Aside from the familiar pattern, the spirits seemingly have few overlapping traits. Albeit that would be an unfair comparison given the limitation of the Lightseekers at the time of the season.
Perhaps the memory may give more insight?

Laidback Pioneer > Baffled Botanist
An interesting comparison with a Pioneer being someone who explores a new area and a botanist. Perhaps one can deduce on once a new area has been discovered, an expert would be called in to study the nature and wildlife. A botanist in the forest would make sense, while the baffled part may refer to the memory of the spirit, or the dark effects brought on by the rain.
Both spirits may have more similarities given they are in the same realm, and similar plant themes in their memories (namely the flowers and the treehouses for the pioneer and botanist respectfully). Although there may be more to their memories that may lend to other lore tidbits.

Twirling Champion > Marching Adventurer
Interestingly when looking at the spirits together, one may see a common theme develop of the spirits possibly having aspirations of being in a parade. Seeing how a twirler may imply a baton twirler, coupled with the marching emote and prop resembling a baton (albeit it being a torch). The adventurer part may through off that idea, although this may lend to the Assembly spirit being a child and being more rambunctious in the woods, rather than a performer in a parade. Not to mention the eye patch that may be linked to a misadventure on the spirit's part.

Crab Whisperer > Scaredy Cadet
Despite the brave reputation of the crab whisperer, their Assembly counterpart takes on a more timid role as a cadet.
The cadet title may be a key detail to the militaristic theme of Wasteland. However the scaredy part of the spirit's name may imply either the spirits were taught to be brave at a younger age when facing the dangers of Sky. Or some spirit ancestors were not intend on going into the hardship of war.
That aside, both spirit memories lets the skykids travers through an environment that damages them (the dark water and rain).

Shushing Light Scholar > Scolding Student
These spirits may have a very strong connection in their names, as a scholar is someone who specialises in a field of study, while the Assembly spirit is a student.
While it is uncertain if both spirits would have similar interests, their emotes do present a stern trait they share with the shush and scolding tones.

The lightseeker guide may not have a lot of lore in the game, aside from the Days of Bloom event with them at a tea drinking table, which may be reminiscent to a tea drinking ceremony although that may be subject to more research.
The Assembly Guide was one of the first spirits to interact with Skykids more, taking a more active role in the story unfolding in the season.

While the Lightseeker season had limited story telling elements, there is still a theme that can be deduced from the season.
This can be seen in the memories such as the piggyback spirit's memory leading up to a boat carrying light orbs, or the names of the spirits relating to Light.
The Assembly season may be a more oriented to a childhood project of building a treehouse. There may be an a subtle common thread from the Lightseeker season in the Assembly troop.
Whether it is the message of teamwork helping the spirits reach their goal. Or the Lightseekers mission of preserving the Light they find in the world (namely the light orbs, and the light trees). Both seasons may have some lore that applies to the big picture, being that the spirits have been taking care of the environment, although had to overcome challenges to do so.

I think the possibility of light being an essential part of almost everything could be the basis Sky's ecosystem; imagining every living being being kind of like a lantern carrying light, which can be transfered to and from it. The ultimate goal would be to deliver that light to Orbit but for now, in the realms, the goal is to gather it on the way.

A manta eating a fish would absorb said fish's light and transform it into their own. The fish would have incentive to try and escape to gather light as their own being a bit longer, but it's not stakes as huge as irl predation since ultimately all that light goes through Eden.

There's also some memory shenaniganery since I headcanon light = memories but I will spare that aspect for later.

There has been an inkling of a theory in my head that may have some relevance here.
A mobius ring is a ring with a twist. As you draw a single line on one side of the paper model, unlike a normal ring where the line would only be on one side, a mobius ring would run continuously on both sides of the paper.
Even if the line is as straight as an arrow, there is a point where the line would cross over to the other side and run twice around the ring in one cycle.

Imagining the whole light cycle concept but applied to time as well. Instead of it circling around each week (which is a theory that I don’t really like) it’s like, as large as the beginning and end of the world entirely. Vs darkness stopping and slowing that cycle, throwing it out of balance completely

Like, Vela’s concept of darkness being permanence and inertia, applied to slowing the cycle of time itself so that the civilization and lived could last longer or something idk

Like… all this horrible corruption, every soul trapped in darkness, wasn’t supposed to happen. It didn’t happen on the previous cycle. But this one is horribly, horribly different, and if we didnt fix it it would’ve become the last cycle

I think I like more that theory of Eden being some sort of "black hole", it contains such an immense amount of darkness in such a reduced space that it starts bending time, much like a real black hole which is a single point in space with practically infinite mass

I have a theory on the subject! Being that light is like water in a sense and the lifeforms of Sky have a similar relation to the Light, as we do with water.

My theory is that, like the cycle of water, light also has a cycle, that goes like this:

1. The light is formed into a light creature (butterfly, fish or bird)
2. The light creature then, responds to the enviroment, if they need to protect their light, they will withdraw it from parts of their body (creating solid bones or shells (crabs), hence the 'dark components'
3. The light creature, depending on their light consumption will either resort to something like photosysnthesis or predation
4. A light creature will grow exponentially bigger until a predatory creature eats it, or infests it (like a parasite, as I beleive a 'dark shroom' can produce spores to eat up light leaving only the 'solid' parts of the body, rendering Krill what they are now)
5. Once a creatures goes hungry (usually predator), they will grow 'dark plant' variant, a solid vegetative creature that can't feed itself, so it becomes encased in a 'frozen' state,
6. Light creatures, might eventually use their light to burn the plants and release their light.
   (or 'Megabird' releases a heatwave that burns the remaining plants
7. Light which doesn't have enough energy will head into orbit and introduced to sky one again)

Yeah, along those lines.

Essentially, my thoughts were that the realms are trapped in time loops, or cycles. Where time would gradually progress as the skykid travels through the realms, and then either stop, or idle, when the skykids stops. And even go backwards as the skykid backtracks.
I am not saying that skykids are time travellers, or the realms are stuck at different time zones necessarily, though going from dawn to dusk is a progression of time none the less.

There are several other theories that goes around the same idea of time loops, time travel or cycles.

To explain further the black hole idea, gravity works something like, heavy objects put "pressure" onto the fabric of space itself, space is like a piece of paper and heavy object bend it, causing nearby object to fall onto them because space itself is bent (at least that's how I understood how it works)

A black hole happens when something has so much weight in such a reduced space that space itself can't hold it anymore and that space "breaks", like if you stabbed a piece of paper with a pen, it leaves an actual hole

I imagine the Eden diamond is something like that but with darkness, all that darkness is screwing the flow of time

Not to deroute your train of thought, but the comparison of light to water fascinates me. See, when we’re in Orbit, there is “water” where the Elders and spirits up there appear. Many difficult cultures place water as the boundary between the living and the dead or a passage to the afterlife. I hold the headcanon that Orbit is the surface of the Light whereas under the water is the Light as an afterlife, where all the ascended spirits go. Skykids can’t go truly into the Light, can’t dive under the waters, because they still have work to do in the world.

Water can almost manifest in multiple states: solid, liquid, and gas. It’ll be called different things — ice, water, and vapor — but it’s still all H2O. Likewise, matter what form light takes — magical, neutral, candlelight, sunlight, light creature, colored, ancestor, skykid, flame or fire — is still all light. We are all one with the light.

I like to think it's not darkness that powered the realms, but the way it reacted to light. Kinda how you could theoretically feed a black hole to get a speed boost irl. So the ancestors thought that a big diamond making wierd sounds when put at the source of all light was normal until they realized they did an oopsie

darkness is taking over the realms, spirits are petrifying, the life is being sapped from the land. You know the end of the world is coming soon and it is too fast to slow or stop — all the time you’ve bought has trickled through your fingers. You still feel obligated to save everyone and bring back the light because it’s what everyone expects you to do and has faith in you to accomplish. So you try using the darkness everywhere as a tool to defeat itself, pushing back its spread so you have more time to make things right.

These sum up exactly what skykids are like.
It is frankly seeing how players as skykids add so much variety to the game.

Some skykids can seem intimidating, while others are shy and sweet. Or some would chase after another skykid to make friends, while others would be hesitant to reach out for various reasons.

Hope the game would continue to foster the friendly atmosphere, albeit it may need to find other ways to either enforce or discourage certain situations.
Where making friends with just any skykid is not a matter of 'the more the merrier,' but more so an encounter to meet a person, spend time with them and either grow more fond of them and become friends, or move on and learn from the experience.

That’s so cool to think about, was going to ask is the manta remembering the whisperer? Are those his bones on the ground (they don’t look like manta bones given the skull), did the manta use his heart candle?

They’re a weird case in that their memory is just as blurry as whale whisperer’s but their cosmetics are more developed

Maybe the cosmetics were made from the manta’s memories (not the manta itself)? Like white having the characteristics of the manta holding the memory?

The idea that spirits only exist if someone remembers them is headcanon, not canon. What we’re talking about is the concept that souls can fuse in this world as they’re made of light, which we can take within ourselves, & which contains the spirits personalities and memories. So memory whisperer would have fused with the manta in her memory

That’s a cool head cannon. Makes me imagine that the elders are like really old computers, and the merge may have been due to data corruption or the spirit intentionally listing themselves as the manta, saving them both instead of just the spirit before the collapse. 🥹

I think so too for at least Rhythm/Sanctuary guide, cause I mean, everyone went the idea that Rhythm = elder bird from final cutscene, but I never saw an explanation, it was never confirmed but many accepted it
