I'd say (and hopefully I make sense. I'm no expert with terminology)

• If a low note doesn't fit in Sky's limited octave range, transpose to the nearest equivalent higher note
• If a high note doesn't fit in Sky's limited octave range, transpose to the nearest equivalent lower note
• If a song is originally written in a minor key, use its relative major key
• If a song has flat notes that cannot be replicated with Sky's limited notes, cry and move on—there is nothing you can do about it, unfortunately

There's not really a minor key setting. You can get a regular minor scale if you start playing on B1.

But you don't get two octaves.

Custom keys would be amazing. But I do appreciate that keeping everyone in the same key with each other and the background music makes it much easier to play with one another, especially for those less comfortable with music theory

It would maybe work if you could "join" someone in a different key than you by tapping an icon above them, similar to joining in with a music sheet. But that still doesn't solve the problem of being out of key with existing background music

I actually sorta hate the thing where the keys tune themselves to the current music. It is soooo frustrating to want to play a song only to find out the notes are all wrong now. Or worse- you hit the same key twice and it plays two different sounds because the instrument is tuning itself to the music as the music plays and changes.

``` Download this "silence" file to the device you play Sky on, play it on loop in your music player, and in-game background music will be turned off. Play music on your Sky instruments without BGM interruption. This doesn't affect the key-changes that go along with the background music, so areas with frequent key changes may still be difficult to play in, or might force you to adapt and be creative!

@cobalt lagoon they just simplify the buttons in order to play songs since not all players can’t read music sheet. If you wanna know, from A1 to B2 is C4 -> B4, from B3 to C5 is C5 -> B5, C5 is C5 (from that photo above). They’re all major. Because of lacking keys, Kiss The Rain can’t fully performed, you always have to skip around 5 notes

*C5 is C6. Sorry fast typing

Yes!! It does some things you just don't see in games generally. And the characters are all so well-written.

Memory from Undertale is my go to song to play in Sky. Very very very early on, I had snuck into soft via VPN (shhh, don't tell the official TGC people like Aeri! :P) I found a good friend there. Then when beta came out and we switched to that, we of course lost our friends list which was very sad. I was sitting around, think I was waiting for players at the 8gate, started playing memory. Then someone else started playing a Harry Potter song. And we realized, we knew each other. It was my good friend! We recognized each other by music!

@woven swan No, it was Mirian who did all the work, haha. I can't music. But maybe I should dig out some of the Undertale charts for friends over here too!

I find teaching myself to try something by ear works out better, as my brain still struggles to remember which random in-game key is the second G, etc when I attempt to read sheet music

So I end up building muscle memory for the song faster that way - win/win, haha

That's why I use the A1 B1 C1 style of sheets. I don't know aaanything about how notes work. Tried to google it once, got a "Technically any key can be any note and something something dense piano notation" and gave up, haha.

The sheet music was the reason I was glad when the key layout for horn and bass were changed to the same layout as the piano. The triangle pattern the horn was in was really cool-looking, but I had no idea how to make an easily-understood note system for it. Saved by an update!

I hope it's helpful for people! I think Aravshetikolava and @dim steeple were the first people I saw to use this kind of layout, way back in January of last year. I've found it super useful.

I've been pondering a way to transcribe songs that would be easiest to read (at least for myself), and I've settled on something that's very close to guitar tabs, that incorporates the standard note labels in the template above. I've whipped up a quick example now and would love to hear what people think before I set off transcribing a whole song. I think one change I would make in the "real thing" is to use the row colors for all of the notes. I just didn't feel like fussing with switching colors right now 😛

Each measure has four beats. A dot means to rest for that beat. Numbers correspond to the notes in each row.

Fair enough. If you peek at Nagati's template, you'll see the three rows of A, B, and C, each with five notes. In my chart, you still have the three rows, and the numbers correspond to the note in that row. So to read the chart, you would simply read left to right. So you would hit A3 and B5 on the first beat, rest one beat, hit C2, hit A3. Etc

But you're right, I'm likely taking too many things for granted in regards to musical knowledge

Count steady in your head, "1 - 2 - 3 - 4," over and over. Download a metronome app and it should clear things up. It's just an easy way to divide music into easy-to-communicate chunks.

I think I'll start by writing it out very simply and also do a tab-style chart for myself (and for anyone else it "clicks" with, if they are out there :P)

I have an Actual Music Question. If I understand correctly, the Sky piano will pick up the key of the music in any level. Is that right? If so, are there any levels that make it easier to play accidentals (sharps or flats)? I am working on a transcription from sheet music for a friend here.

What amazes me now that I understand the instrument limitations is how much beautiful music Sky players are producing. Wow!

To my knowledge @cobalt lagoon it is not possible to get an instrument to play accidentals in any music in any levels. The one thing that might work is to find a BGM song that makes the key you're playing in shift (like the flute-harp duet in Forest) and time the music you're playing to that one section where on might get that one Ab that deviates from your main key. That would require a lot of careful timing though. ^^

I'd kill for an instrument "advanced mode" that unlocks either full chromatic scale or a selection of scales. Complicates the simple beauty of playing along with BGM and others, though

There are (or in the case of the beta were) some that can be challenging to start off because there's nothing signaling the tempo. And sometimes there's randomly a lag between when I tap and when the note plays which can throw a person off.

And then there are some like the fast one that is the only non-seasonal sheet music in beta ( ) that I think a lot of people would most effectively get a feel for by watching a video of how it's supposed to sound.

The idea was to have it read a bit like guitar tabs. Each row corresponds to a row of notes on the instrument interface. The number is the button on that row. You read left to right, each space is one beat

The “sheets” themselves are just going to be simple midi files, from there we can visualize the notes however we want. That will also let people use external software to transcribe their music, then just upload the midi rather than doing it by hand in whatever interface I manage to sloppily put together.

I’d like to make a ‘practice mode’ that lets you play along in the browser, with the same instrument interface used in game. That will come later though.

I personally prefer the visual method someone came up with in the very beginning of the beta, which used letters to identify the sound/note per instrument and then used regular sheet music to outline what to tap and when

@hallow kraken Well I can't diagnose your sanity over the Internet, but I suspect you're not hearing things in this case--Vincent Diamante composed the music for both Sky and Flower, and there are a lot of nods to previous games in here. (I also swear I hear musical references to fl0w in some of the Prairie music.)

@tiny raft Best way is to either listen to someone playing it already, or check out YouTube videos. If you watch videos be sure to watch ones from April onward because some of the instrument sounds changed at that point.

I don’t think the horn changes based on your chirp voice anymore, @pale kite. At least it didn’t in the latest beta builds, I haven’t tried it in launch.

The sound itself is much improved, though. Much less harsh and some vibrato on the higher notes. Sounds great in the reverb-drenched temples.

Song sheets in the game also sometimes/often have different parts for different instruments. Piano and harp seem to have the same part, so if you get a piano and then horn, you can experience the song sheets in very different ways.

It's DONE! This was a really hard chart to make! It took me so long, I actually forgot who exactly got this song for me... whoops. Sorry, friend.

I stitched together two different videos of two players playing this song, and wrote down the notes I saw. The second player was moving extremely quick and made a few mistakes, so it was extremely hard to transcribe the correct notes. I did my best! Though who knows, I might have written a few down wrong on the chart. Hopefully not.

This song is easier to play than it looks, that initial 4 note is scary but it's not so bad after that. It's very pretty, I recommend giving it a shot!

My method: tap it out on the instrument in the game to find what buttons correspond to which notes, then write it down or memorize it.

If you mean in-game sheet music that is not possible (even though it would be great!). However you can write it down in any way you want and works for you!

Be sure to check if you’re in the right level to play the song you want, as they change the key of the instruments. Some songs are almost impossible to be played on the game unfortunately

I mean it technically doesn't matter what key a level is in--the same "buttons" of the keyboard itself will always work. If your song starts on button B2 in Prairie, it'll still start on B2 in Wasteland, it's just that the pitch will be different.

I feel like I never quite explain it well--but you know the tune when you sing do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do? You can start on a lower pitch or a higher pitch, but the tune basically sounds the same no matter how high or low the starting note is. Same thing with the instruments in Sky.
