Those who have at least one of the items in the gratitude pack cannot buy the pack (the pack was temporarily available for all of us in the previous build, but that was a bug which is now fixed), so probably the spirits who have the items sold in the pack will eventually come, because otherwise it will be like people who already have a gratitude music sheet can never get the red bird mask or the white fur cape.
I know it's only my speculation and probably not the clarification you want, Dae, but this is beta discussion channel, so if you want TGC to clarify more details, probably #wishlist-and-ideas-archived would be the better place to appeal to them.

I know. I find it really unfortunate that we won't be able to keep what we get though. Feels a bit unfair to people like me who only have the Android beta option. By the time live releases so many wonderful cosmetics will have gone past and all of us android betas will feel incredibly left out. Being able to switch what we have over to live when it comes out would feel like a really nice thank you from the company for our work on beta testing.
Especially like, I've been waiting for the opportunity to get the fox mask, even though it is just beta, and now that I have it here and it's become a part of my sky identity, the fact that I'll be losing it all over again when it goes live is kind of heartbreaking.

Traveling Spirits aren't scheduled to return to Beta. Testing of this feature has come to a close. Take this as a reminder that Beta isn't meant to be a substitute for the Live version of the game. It is not a free preview or early access. Features and events will be unfinished, details of completed features may be intentionally obscured from Beta so we can save some surprises for the global playerbase.
Progress on Beta will never transfer over to Live. We understand that can be a disappointment when you're waiting for the game to become available on your platform. Veteran iOS testers can assure you that having to start over from scratch, especially after years of testing, can be emotionally taxing. We're forever indebted to those who donated (and continue to do so) their time and effort to make Sky the best it can be, and after losing everything in Beta, still chose to start over from nothing and continue to be a part of this wonderful community.
We're fully aware those who are waiting for any platform other than iOS will miss out on some content, it's the nature of rolling releases and a harsh reality of game development. These things take time, especially for a tiny self-publishing studio like ours. Thousands of hours in addition to blood, sweat, and tears goes into bring Sky to as many players as possible. This is also why we have introduced features like the Traveling Spirits so people have a chance to catch up over time.
This is why we try to emphasize that participation in Beta is entirely voluntary, because there is no promise of permanence. If you're feeling angry or resentful of this fact, please know it's okay to step away from Beta and wait for Sky to come to your platform, where your progress will be permanent.

the beta cape was never in-game before launch, all the stuff including free IAP and seasonal stuff got reset and didn't carry over

I do miss some things in old beta, perhaps most of all the close-knit community we used to be with trust and respect all around. With the global release many old friends have not returned and a few trolls arrived. But instead, we also have a bigger game with more complexity in many areas and gameplay.
To me, being part of beta has felt like an honour. I know not everyone agrees with that sentiment, but that’s ok. I feel that sometimes beta access is viewed more like a status symbol, rather than...a call of duty? Well, maybe that’s too big an expression. But it’s sort of a group project you take part in, more than “just gaming”.

The beta felt more like a journey than the real game, if I'm being honest.
The final release is a live service game. It doesn't have a specific end until it loses enough popularity, the app-world changes or something significant happens.
Taking part of that live service is fun in itself, but it lacks an end. Something the beta had. A goal. Test the game with what the staff makes and figure out those faults and game ideas to produce the final game.
In a way and for many people that is much more giving than the final product. Like an artist getting more from drawing the drawing, versus the final draft that others might find amazing on it's own.
For me there is a worth in that because it's not accessible by everyone, but not everyone should be able to join everything. The single experiences you get to take part of are often more special than that "anyone" can get. Rich people pay a lot for that kind of entertainment for example.
Just the fact that there is no "end" to Sky makes me really sad in a way, because Journey had such an emotional impact of wonder through it's distinct visuals and flowing music. It had a point
If you ask me what Sky is about you get two answers:
The first is the understood intent of the game: It's about children made out of light helping restore the world.
The second is the game actually created: It's about collecting light in a tedious timed loop every day, to unlock cosmetics.
The second is what is the reality and makes the beta more admirable as it has a more distinct purpose and end of life

Yes, everyone here is making really good points, and I apologise for my frustrations. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a beta tester, I really am, it's just going to be hard to be so behind most everyone else when the live does get released. The traveling spirits are a very kind addition (though I do wish they had waited for Android launch, so new Android players could be given the opportunity to get older content right off the bat instead of missing out on it for a second time).
But thank you all for your responses because it's helping me to view this in a different light.
I've been struggling a bit lately with other unrelated things so a bit of that is being reflected here. Sorry.

That's a good point, it seems to me that the iOS release was a financial and agreed decision more than it was "we're ready". They had to scramble for the android version while the iOS has had a significant amount of bugfixing and certain core elements fixed.
Due to the AAA nature of how TGC delivers their games, Journey being the prime example, Sky definitely felt rushed. Maybe they had to please investors with a return on their investment within a set date, or they had to in order to pay their employees? Lot's of legit threads to be pulled at once there.
For anyone being picky reading this, I am speaking my own mind out of assumption based on presented information. Then again, you don't need a source to make correct assumptions if you have enough information

The discrepancy between the game’s initial core message and the ultimate daily reality is an allegory of its own, but perhaps not one TGC intended to make, given how grim it is. This is why I feel so strongly that in order to be true to its stated core values, TGC will need to find a way to add some big new content that is allegorical to the game... find a way to integrate entirely new narratives to the game that have other profound messages. But of course, this costs money, so we’re back to the first (probably unintended) grim allegory.

This^^^. And on top of that, it’s really plain that they drew their inspiration from real-world philosophy, religion and mythology. This is why the initial core resonates so deeply with people all over the world. Their source inspiration was good. They are not afraid to go big and deep with their stories. And to say there is only one story to be told flies in the face of the real world, where profound stories abound and live side-by-side, augmenting each other. It is a matter of both generating new content and sorting out how to connect things up to what already exists in game... which is a tall order. But I do think the longevity of the game demands it.

Idea for new land that would not mess with the lore. The land of the time before the battle. Maybe when the tensions were ramping up and the last days of civilization where happening. We could see the building of the great diamond in ||Eden|| look at the light extraction factory in forest, wander in the golden wasteland before the graveyard and see the krill when they where tame before they lost control of them. And go to vault of knowledge where the elders, fearing the end, where making the first sky kids to try to carry the light on.
Would there have to be consequences to going back in time? Like losing a bunch of cape stars ( which you could get back by coming back to present day?

I´ve been thinking in a way of adding new levels and expanding the world of Sky without breaking the journey theme set by Sky. Also, since I suspect an underwater level might be under development at the moment, I´ve been working on that. This, of course, is just a long-term idea, but I thought it would be the moment to share it before it´s too late.
Instead of just adding an extra level not connected to anything, I´ve worked on the medieval concept of "As above, so below", creating an upside down and underwater version of the game that would mirror the current levels in Sky. It could be called Ocean, or sea, or Abyss, or whatever.
This Ocean version of Sky would help explain why we as skykids cannot break the ||cycle of life and death of Eden, because the red diamond split into 2 and it won´t heal until balance is restored by bring for halves back together.||To visualize how all this could work, I´ve used an image with the cross-section of all the levels from Journey and adapted it to Sky (the layout is similar so it was quite easy to do). The new levels would mirror the ones in Sky so, instead of going up, we would dive deeper and deeper into the ocean.
As for what could the levels be, I´ve named them to get an overall idea of them (some are inspired by suggestions from other players, Heather being one of them).This gigantic expansion doesn´t need to be done all at once, and maybe some portions could be connected to the current game (I´ve placed some arrows). These connected areas could be the first to be implemented.
I know it´s a lot and smartphones might not even be able to handle something so big, but I thought it was worth sharing.

It's a little more complicated to change items that have been in players' hands (and paid real money) for a while. We may resurrect the folding animation into an all-new item in the future, but I cannot promise this will be the case.
Regarding other changes, I know we made some drastic changes to the Winter masks and pants, but the reasoning behind those changes was a little different. The goal for those was to bring a little more diversity with the pants (Art Team felt they were too same-y) and the masks and hair needed a little more love and polish to bring them up to par with more recent cosmetics, which took some trial and error and feedback from y'all to achieve. It's kind of wild to think Winter's original run was in 2018!

FOMO is a very strong motivator, unfortunately. It's flattering that people are very excited for the game, but nonetheless poses risks by circumventing the official process. Dealing with hacking and the like is a never-ending arms race. I can assure you we take these things seriously, but it is best that we remain silent about our efforts to address it.

Interesting, tried artificially throttling my device to see how Sky would play on a slower device.
1 - It doesn't. I mean it loads just fine, and no internal settings change, but there's a reason for the strict cutoff point. Anything ~<20 fps is nausea territory.
2 - I have even less of a clue how Sky determines device rating now. I thought maybe it ran a quick benchmark on each startup, nope. Maybe it runs a benchmark on first startup, still possible but not likely?
Sky gives each device a set "capability rating", so it has to be pulling that number from somewhere. Which leaves two other alternatives, an algorithm, or a database.
I pray its not an algorithm. (GPU x Processor × RAM) It'll give a meaningless value. Just look at the variability for devices with the exact same hardware.

The beta version is an entirely separate version of the game used by the devs to test upcoming features and patch bugs before they hit live (the real game), like upcoming seasons. Some mechanics are different (for example, IAP packs are free) for the purpose of testing but progress isn’t linked in any way to the live version or safe- meaning progress can be reset at any time and your access might get revoked. Its worth mentioning that content in beta does not reflect what will happen in the live version and isn’t supposed to be treated as early access or a way to enjoy paid content for free. It’s available globally but you need an invite to join, and those get shared in #beta-announcements when the devs need more testers.
As the bot says, you can give yourself a role that will be pinged for beta announcements and when there’s a new beta wave there will be a link there you can use to join the beta. It’s first come first serve, so when the slots are filled the beta will close again until the next wave

@lusty light that's not really true. Apple doesn't pull apps from the store if they don't use Metal. There are literally tens, if not hundreds of thousands of apps using OpenGL still (most of mine do) and this is just not an issue. Sure, OpenGL has been marked as deprecated, but that typically means we have years of iOS updates before we can't use it. Vulkan (I've done some reading this morning) is basically an alternative to Metal that addresses a lot of the same issues that Metal does. There is a layer called MoltenVK I think that allows devs to use Vulkan on iOS and other platforms. It's all possible. Don't believe all the hype from the non-Apple crowd. There's a lot of pointless nastiness on both side imo. I always figured the Android port would be problematic; the device range is huge, and if TGC don't want to upset players who (probably unreasonably) expect every game to "just work" on whatever phone they happen to have, they are unfortunately in for a lot of work, evidenced by the long beta cycle for Android.
I'm currently testing an update to one of my own apps (I'm iOS/tvOS only), and I can tell you, testing on the relatively small number of devices produced by Apple is a lot of work (especially for a solo dev). I do NOT envy TGC at all on this.

about optimizing for different devices, i would say usually devs want to have one set of code that works on all devices, which is unlikely for android environment, but still wanting to make things easier, so we categorize devices by api levels (aka android version), cpu types etc etc, then optimize the app for each categories. There’re also some issues that produce by a specific device, in this case devs would have to do optimizations for this certain device.
(i would just ignore this kind of issues if i can’t resolve it by looking at the code, unless i have that device in my hand to test, cause i really can’t do anything about it)
so basically, devs won’t write codes for only one specific device in most of the time and hope they will never have to do it
could be different in a relatively larger company but the basic idea should be the same

It creates server load as well as impact to CS since these players send in tickets with various issues that we ultimately have to close unresolved because we can't help them due to the nature in which they're accessing the game. We're definitely trying to combat all fronts, but we also must make sure legitimate players aren't accidentally caught in the crossfire.

The fact that some of them are reporting bugs (as per Ktjn’s message above) indicates that some are honestly wanting to test. A difficult position for TGC to be in. Side-loading and Android have certainly added complexity to the process. The problem is that I suspect when Android is launched in live these fake apps will cause problems there too.

The only issue I described is increased server load from the large influx of additional unexpected players. We're doing our best accommodate until we find a solution with the best outcome. That doesn't mean one should invite ill will towards these players, it's incredibly important to practice kindness to all, regardless of the situation. It's on us, TGC, to address the issues caused and find a solution. That being said if you do find anyone who is being toxic or saying inappropriate things, please try and report them, then block/mute them as needed.
I don't want to discourage anyone from submitting bug reports, the game files are the same so those reports could, and have in the past, proved useful for identifying fixes for things. That being said, downloading the game from a third party source is against ToS, and we discourage trying to circumvent the normal process. TGC cannot monitor files downloaded from a third party, though we can identify the source. When you download game files from an illegitimate source, you run the risk of downloading whatever nastiness they might have packaged with the game files such as viruses or spyware. I know the FOMO is strong and people are impatient for Android, but there's a lot of risk involved in trying to gain 'early access' that way. It's better to wait for the official release and have the best possible experience.

I did, I had to go look at what the exact change was from the engineers cuz it was a small novel of technical jargon <_<
It looks like some devices that were capable of 60fps were not being flagged as such so we had to make some adjustments.

The notes in beta updates it's pretty surface-level. I haven't worked through all the JIRA tickets of bug fixes for the Live patch notes just yet. We also did a large number of regressions for old, unaddressed bugs this round as well.

We'd have to build out the engine logic to check if you have the cape in your inventory or not, which is why that gate requires it to be equipped. We're doing our best to address people circumventing owning the Beta or Founder's cape and gaining access to the office through ignoble means. It's a delicate balance because we celebrate other out-of-bounds activity, but the Office has investment tied to it (either through investing time as a pre-launch beta tester or investing money in TGC by purchasing the Founder's Pack.)
