Your best bet is to go behind the guardian statues to the left when you enter the area where they are patrolling. Go as far away from the center of the room as you can.
This works for the underground as well as for the last (snow) area.

Maybe your internet connection wasn't working? The game doesn't explicitly tell you if you are online or not, so if you never see anyone chances are it was due to being offline.
Most of the time people meet each other in the Broken Bridge or Pink Desert (the level where you rebuild a bridge and the desert level after it).
Also ,players may not show up straight in front of you, but if you see like white light in the corner of your screen, it's showing you where your companion is at. A lot of the time new players just run past that so the other player doesn't even get a chance to get to you 😅

When I say white light, I mean like this thing in the top left corner. The companion was behind me.

Yes and no. There’s a similar story progression but you aren’t controlling a specific character. It’s a lot more relaxing and there isn’t anything chasing after you like krill or the guardians

I never really got the opportunity to write about Journey so i'll do it now: I just wanted to point out that i really despised Journey's ending for the sole reason that it ended in the first place. You just need to collect all the symbols and finish the game, then you can get white scarf when you start a new game!

@boreal remnant If you like flying around in sky there's a good chance you'll also like movement in flower. In that game you're controlling a flower petal that becomes a whole swarm as you fly through flowers on the ground. The controls are quite unique because the direction you fly in depends on how you tilt the controller - you can literally place the controller on your palm and pretend your hand is the swarm of petals, it's great. You progress through the levels by flying through enough flowers, which causes the surrounding area to rejuvenate. There's secret flower bunches to find and other achievements. Later there's some obstacles. The overall story is up for interpretation but it centers around nature and sustainable energy sources I think. Sorry for the wall of text, let me know if you have any questions about Flower or Journey!

You usually encounter one other random player on your Journey. The communication between the two of you is extremely limited, even more than in Sky. There is absolitely no way to chat, no way to know who your friend is (until the end of the game), there are no emotes. A lot of people don't even know that the game is not single player when they start, so they think that the other figure in the game is an AI.
The game really pushes this "a journey to a mysterious world where you make a connection with a complete stranger who is there with you with the same goal"

@fringe jay Journey is, simply put, Sky but in the desert. It's equally beautiful, don't get me wrong, but it's basically the same thing, just on the ground. I highly recommend it, as it's a two player experience that's just beautiful

I think it's their design. Krills are scary and ugly, but feel kind of like living beings. Guardians in Journey on the other hand feel like soulless war machines, and that's terrifying

...not to mention that your movement in Journey is much slower and more restrained compared to Sky. You cannot escape them.

That's white robes. You get it by finding all glowing symbols.

Nope, just red and white. White has a special ability compared to red.
You can, however, download mods to change appearance of the robes (fellas on the Journey Server have been making a bunch of them lately).

Although I think it changes only for you, the other players can't see it, I think. Haven't tried.

Flower has this awesome sort of free, magical feeling and suddenly it's like you're being punished and attacked... things get increasingly ominous and dark with one quick turn and that sense of freedom is yanked away. If you were playing it to relax then suddenly past a point it's not so relaxing. It's interesting and dramatic, just kind of unfortunate in how tries to push the darker story and how that might not work for those not expecting it. Sometimes it seems it'd be nice to just keep flying around as flower petals and watch the colours and listen to the music.

Especially after a game like Flow, that was a much more chill game. Tougher as you go but optionally so, you can stick to the level you enjoy. Really relaxing as background music.

Now that I have replayed Journey, I think I figured out what I find is missing in the maps of Sky.
Size. Now, it could be a resolution thing, but the zones of Journey feel bigger, more open, than Sky. Walking the length of the starting desert in Journey takes twice as long as the Isle of Dawn. Gliding is a factor I considered, but even just walking, I think the sand physics play a role in how big and grand the environment in Journey feels. That and the atmospherics of sand and snow sticking to you, your character shaking it off if it accumulates.

Journey technically isn’t a sequel but it is a precursor of sky in the fact that story elements are shown without any explanation and the gameplay style is nearly the same (except the traveler walks slower and jumping is an auto feature)

Without explanation as in there is no voice actor being paid to tell you what’s going on you have to just theorize

I think it works differently depending on what platform you’re on. I use iOS and can only find people randomly, but since someone offered to help me out “if I was on pc” I assume there’s a friend feature there at least

There’s no friend feature in journey at all, it’s not that kind of game

You can connect with people you want if you do very specific things at very specific times but it wasn’t intended for you to do it

Not completely randomly. Occasionally Journey players would make an arranged meeting, and intentionally synch entering and activating same things in the world in a way that would let them connect to each other. The person who offered help expected that, if you accepted their help, the two of you would through messages or a voice chat option on some other messaging app tell each other where you are and what you did so the game would connect you.

@dapper yacht I also suggest making a "password" so you and your companion can recognize each other. Last time I was arranging a meeting with someone, our password was three small and one big chirp. That way, if the player you connect with doesn't respond the same way to you, you'll know the game connected you with someone else. Then you have to refresh the game and try again, until it matches you with your friend.

From personal experience, the white robe that I play as gets the other white robe somehow stuck in OOB and our only solution is to restart the level.

We tried to do stuff to break some elements of the game. We broke the initial encounter with the (i call them like this) War machine. The ribbons who were supposed to be shredded in front of you somehow survived, and also tried flying over the end patrol. They didn't chased us, and the whole music made it ultra dramatic for no events at all.

Journey was made using the PhyreEngine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhyreEngine) It's a game engine made by Sony.
As for Sky, i saw in the credits AWS. Aka Lumberyard, a game engine by Amazon (?????) (https://aws.amazon.com/lumberyard/)
(Correction: AWS are amazon services. Sky does not use Lumberyard.)

Making a game engine from scratch is definitely possible, but it would take an excruciating amount of time to get right! I've some amateur gamedev for 15 years (Coding got the better of me.) And explore many different game engines. Even tried to mess around with OGRE 3D and shortly abbandonning it because i realize it was nothing but a rendering engine but an actual game engine lol.

Recently, i saw a rise in free and open-source game engines. Mainly because of one contender that broke the game engine industry, which is the Godot engine. Godot was the first who DARED being licensed under the MIT license. Which basically states "Do whatever lol i don't care".

Ever since Godot, i saw Unreal declaring the Unreal engine Open-source, Unity slacked off with their payment policy, Lumberyard popped up out of nowhere... Because of Godot, the game engine scene is changed forever.

The PhyreEngine can now compile games for PC (Under Windows, with DirectX11) Also to Android according to the wikipedia page.

But it is mainly playstation, yes.

both of them are very replayable in my opinion, but in different ways. in terms of one playthrough of the full story I think Journey and Sky are about the same length, but since Sky gives players so many options in terms of going from point A to E, E to C, etc. it kind of feels longer. I replay Journey and find new details to the main story, while I play Sky for the distractions if that makes sense
