In my opinion I don't find the lantern to be worth 20$ I see it to be more worth at around 5-10$, although it does have 35 regular candles that come with it.

I find it increasingly getting useless in the long run since most players usually memorize dark paths by then. Although it is a fun little knick-knack to have to use and explore dark areas and see it in a new light

As WattleFlower (KitKat) above said, you can receive and try the free Lantern spells from the boat at home.

I'm a busy person and during seasons I only earn 10 candles per day. While on off seasons I earn 15-20 candles perday (already including dailies) and I find it to suffice and it's efficient for me atleast
