"ensuring" that it isn't already burnt is a bit tricky, but an easy way to deal with it already being burnt is to leave and reenter the area via the sunny forest exit -- that's the closest entrance/exit point in the area to a trapped manta

you're basically aiming to change into a new instance where it hasn't been burnt yet so you can get there and do it yourself in time

Sometimes it could be a bug, but if you have a lot of unfavorited friends that are disappearing it could be that you have reached the viewable limit of friends that can appear in your constellation (while you can have an unlimited number of friends, there is a limit to how many you can see at once in your constellation) pSkyHeart
