you have to pick up the quest from the circle that appears after a certain amount of plants is burned

or from someone after they start it

If they are completing the shard, you should still have the option to sit in the meditation circle that appears--that will trigger the memory. Once the memory is done, you get your AC and the guide will appear a moment later.
If they activate the meditation circles before you get over, you should be able to select one of them to join them in the quest. Otherwise, I'd just recommend restarting the shard if you are able by warping home and warping back through the shrine
