The email didnt come from mcafee, it came from the scam but the link to upgrade payment info redirects to mcaffee subscription, so if people pay the scammer gets their affiliate cut. If people use common sense cloud almost full has nothing to do with anvitirus, but if they panick they might fall for it.

I think they just hope to get enough elderly people who don’t know any better. Like back in the day after AOL came out and email scamming took off. The elderly then were big targets for that because they’ll be the first to think they must need it without questioning anything.

I've seen it on YouTube, they get access to their computer and install a fake virus popup, and then they impersonate Microsoft on a phone call to lure them into paying for the fake antivirus program that just simulates scanning and removes the popup. There's a guy known for exposing those scammers and messing with them, he acts like an old and keeps tampering with the keyboard until the scammer loses it and starts cussing

That’s a very serious situation for the person who finds themselves in it. I’ve seen it happen to people with banks, too. Person acting as a representative from a bank and gets the person on the phone to send money to unlock the account or whatever they say the issue is.
