What skills are recruiters/hiring agencies and/or in house teams looking for from designers? I’ve been wanting to switch from the company I’m currently at and get something else I’ve just had little-no response and am looking to find out what I need to do to stand out.

I can only speak from a very limited perspective since I’ve worked for the same company for a long time. When we hire, we look for competent basic design skills and some creative flair. We don’t look for perfection. Most young designers have some rough edges. Polish comes with time and experience, and we’re happy to invest that time into someone who shows creative potential. The other quality we look for is a team player. We’ve rejected applicants who came across as a prima donna or a know-it-all. A little humility and a willingness to learn goes a long way. That’s all pretty basic, but I hope it is of some help.

Thank you so much @granite plover! That’s very true that starting out there’s a ton of getting used to how the professional world works and that being a team player and collaborating is a major factor. Definitely one of the things I’m looking to get right now is more of that experience. At my current job I feel like there’s little room to collaborate on a project and it’s very much so handing off tasks and not doing much else. I’m getting some polishing with my skills which is great but I’m definitely wanting more of that through work that I can include in my portfolio, show off, and provide stories about how I grew from the project and worked with others.

I agree with the sentiments above. I wouldn't worry about certifications until after you have a strong portfolio established. A case could be made that studying for certifications makes you stronger in the use of the apps. However, people are going to want to see the work regardless of certs. Thus, I would put most of the focus on the portfolio. Also, with a strong portfolio, you may not need the certs. :)

Hey! I have a question for you about managing your career.
Currently, I am a digital artist and previously a graphic designer.
Currently, I'm 17 years old and I have about 3-4 years of experience in Photoshop (I understand it very well) and a bit of Premiere Pro and After Effects
(much less, but I still understand it), because I had a bit of a break, unfortunately.
I don't have any specialization in these programs, currently I do it more for fun, but I would like to monetize it.
I'm wondering what I should pursue, and in order for my future earnings to be very satisfactory (a lot),
I'm wondering whether I should start learning, for example, Figma or Illustrator and be able to make logos or, for example, programming,
so that I can work as an art director or as a very good freelancer etc.
So my question is what is the best option in such a situation? What should I understand to be able to earn more? (actually anything)

In addition, try to network with other freelancers, especially those who have a successful business, so you can learn from them.

solid merlin
#

icy vector
# solid merlin Thanks a lot!

A note: working for fun and working with clients are two different animals. It takes a lot of discipline to work as a freelancer or run your own business. There are a lot of distractions if you work from home (TV, family, friends, etc.) that you have to tune out. Also, you'll have to manage the business end, such as accounting, payables and taxes (when you get to 18 in the US). Just a few points to consider.

#

I would start small. Offer your services to a local business or group. Remember, that your costs should reflect your experience (and quality). Build a clientele, and offer incentives to your client for finding you more clients. But build slowly. Getting a project done early is far better than it being late, so plan your time wisely. If you think a project will take you 10 hours, then say a week. you don't work every day, and that will enable you to do the best possible work. And ALWAYS, try to take time off on weekends. Time off spurs creativity. Again, hope this helps.

When I click on a project, or the "About" or "Contact" page, the only way to get back is to use the browser "back" button. It would be nice to have some navigation on each page to return to the home page.

#

I like the clean, simplicity of the site layout, but the empty space in the bottom right makes it feel imcomplete. It would be nice to have a sixth project to put there. Or you could move the wine label to the right and put your "TC" logo in the middle box.

#

Other then that, nice work! I really like the "Pulse" logo šŸ‘

#

I see now that clicking on your name in the top bar takes you home. That works fine. It just took my a minute to figure it out.

Have you done a art residency before? For application -- What do I do if I am asked to only submit 10 images for an art residency application? But some book arts can be best shown in multiple inner pages which would be too many images for just one book art, one of the many works.

I am seeking art residency programs in New York City, I'm exploring the relationship between intrinsic human emotions and the collage of colors and lines or patterns. I do illustration and interior design, mainly, and like to expand more on printmaking, painting and book arts. I'm from Taiwan. If you have suggestions for me, I very much appreciate them!

Is there a common way to do some really entry level photo editing for money? I have PS, a few months of learning with a can do attitude and want to get my foot in the door with really anything. Like I've even replied to people on here and was happy to properly complete their task for just $1 but there's a pattern on people not actually paying out. I have couple questions regarding Ui designing:

  • Do you have to program them when it comes to Game User Interface or Website Blueprints?

  • Do you send the finish product as a PS File?

  • Where do you mainly get commissions from?

I’m new to UI designs out of Roblox, I’ve been a Roblox UI designer for over 5 years but recently started fully doing my UIs outside of Roblox and was wondering how to actually get non-Roblox customers.

How you set up your portfolio depends on who you are hoping to attract with it. If you want it to be a general catch-all for all kinds of clients and projects, then it's fine to have a wide range of projects types and styles to show. Showing a wide range of abilities might also be attractive if you are looking for a position with a small studio where a range of skills could be desirable. If you are trying to land a particular client, I would focus your portfolio on anything that is most relevant to that client. You want them to see that you have expertise in their field/specialty. As for showing work as if you've worked on big brands; I'd avoid presenting anything that might be seen as dishonest. You'll do better in the long run by keeping everything on the up and up. Good luck!

I'm very sorry about the situation in your country. I hope everything will slowly return to normal now. "How to find gigs?" is a question many people ask themselves. There’s a lot of competition on Upwork and Fiverr, but you have a portfolio and experience, so you're definitely in a better position there.

I would focus on networking.

What kind of clients do you most enjoy working with? Think about where they spend their time, and try to connect with them there. For example, if you want to do game-related work, look for forums where such people gather.

Not looking to make a career out of doing PS stuff, but was wondering if its even appropriate as a hobbyist to do Fiverr. I'm also not beginner but I'm also not an expert and I'm kind of intermediate, is there anything wrong with taking on simple fiverr projects? I do struggle with some stuff, but I'm always practicing and I figured this would be a nother way to practice but I'm not sure if that's appropriate to do on Fiverr (plus I'm not going to be charging much anyway and I'm mostly concerned about not being up to snuff for a task, etc).

granite plover
# alpine stag Hello everyone. I recently got called for an interview as a junior graphic desig...

It's impossible to predict what the interview will be like since different companies do things differently. In general, here are a couple of thoughts:

  1. Be honest about what you know and don't know. I've had candidates claim expertise in virtually every software program ever written. If you're not a seasoned veteran, that's a big red flag that you are not being honest. Be confident in your talent and skills, but don't oversell it. A little humility can add to a good impression.

  2. Present yourself as a team player. Express enthusiasm for working with, and learning from others.

Other than that, just be friendly and honest. Interviews can be nerve wracking, but remember that it's like that for everyone. Good luck!

First of all, you should find a way to motivate yourself to post regularly about projects that are interesting to you. What are your interests, what are your hobbies, etc. Sometimes it helps to just browse through some news sites about topics that are interesting to you and you think "I like that and it suits me". From this, depending on your style (graphic design, photography, web design, etc.), you can then create a schedule of when to implement which ideas and how, and then post them when. This way you can plan well in advance.

# nova gazelle Hello! I don't know where to ask this exactly. Is sending a creative brief quest...

I’ve always operated on just asking questions via email, while a questionnaire might seem like it takes some of the burden off of you, it can potentially come off as impersonal. Also depending on how granular you’re making the questionnaire prompts, you might get more detail and specific information from personal correspondence.

You might consider having a saved list of the basic questions that you can copy and paste into emails, if you find yourself asking the same things over and over, and then have an email back and forth from there

View how your peers display their projects. Spend some time creating those displays/graphics, and fill out your behance page with as many cool projects as you can.
if you have any questions, feel free to dm me.

Design is about making good decisions. Just because something looks good or looks cool doesn’t mean it’s the right decision for the project. It’s not art. If you wanna make money, you’re gonna work on a lot of projects that aren’t cool. You’re gonna have to work with business people who don’t know how to communicate what they want. You’re gonna have to get good at reading your customers. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t want to pay for design work and will try to manipulate you. Every designer feels insecure when they’re just starting. But you have to learn to judge yourself honestly, compare yourself to other designers and what they’re charging so you can be competitive

Hey folks, I could really use some advice. I'm currently in the middle of campus placements and have a decent shot at landing a 3–4 LPA Software job. But honestly, I'm not interested in that kind of work it's not something I enjoy or see myself growing in.

On the other hand, I'm really passionate about UX design. I know that with some effort, I can land an internship or a junior role at a small company or startup. The pay might not be great initially, but at least I’ll enjoy the work and grow into better opportunities later.

My only dilemma is should I go for the campus job just for security and a good company name, even if the work doesn’t excite me? Or should I take the risk and fully focus on UX, knowing it might take a bit longer but would align with my interests?

Would love to hearĀ yourĀ thoughts!

because I am doing a photoshop course right now and I have As on every assignment except like four of them in fact I have 100% on nearly every assignment

that isn't prone to scammers?

I want to do freelance photoshop jobs for people

slender venture
#

In ANY professional setting you will want to present yourself in the best light. Punctuation and grammar are essential for others to take you seriously. After that there are many ways to use Photoshop to make money, but it will be ONE of many skills/tools you will need. What do you want to do/be in your carreer? Doing Photoshop isn't really a career, imo.

flint anchor
#

Can you clarify?

I want to make freelance money designing stuff or editing photos, retouching old photos, etc

Stuff like that

#

Do I just do a graphic design trade?

#

Like at a school?

#

Or is an adobe certification course a good way to learn?

slender venture
#

My honest opinion, unless you are in the top 0.01% in this space, you will find it difficult to make "much" freelance money designing stuff or editing photos in a fulfilling way.

I find using Photoshop in certain circumstances or to enhance one aspect of my work is great, but it does not make up the bulk of my toolset anymore.

Advice I would give to myself would be: to assess what I want and how to achieve it. I would completely change any trajectory I had and focus it mostly on AI tools. Learning AI, especially in the creative space will benefit you the most now and going forward. Then complement those tools with Photoshop and other tools.

flint anchor

AI as in artificial intelligence or as in Adobe Illustrator?

slender venture
#

As an example I used to spend hours, days, weeks, or even longer on editing and design work. It was good, but very time consuming. It can be fulfilling, but it can also burn you out if there isn't enough creativity in the process.

With AI (Artificial Intelligence) I made this in a relatively short period of time. (With Photoshop, illustrator, Indesign, etc., it would have taken me days, at least.) And now I can reproduce it in many forms in minutes:

flint anchor
#

I do want to do photoshop requests like where someone wants you to edit a photo, not as a career but to make some freelance money

#

Ok thanks

#

While I’m doing the trade I mean

#

If not I could just do the trade and get another part time gig

#

That’s possible

warm zodiac
# flint anchor Or is Adobe Certified Professional certification worth anything?

Might if you intend to teach. But again it would be akin to a paper that says this guy can use a pen or a brush. If you cannot imagine a design it would bring you very far. But if they search a draft man to retrace designs, the pen certificate might be useful. There are countless of different jobs in the creative industry but they change rapidly. I started as graphic artist, but am now photographer, videographer, photojournalist and editor..,

flint anchor

Ok well thanks

# worldly wadi Dealing with clients who can't make up their mind and keep changing things even ...

Yep, that’s such a common (and frustrating) situation 😬
What really helps is sticking tightly to a clear design process — and breaking the payment into stages. When a client pays part of the fee upfront and knows exactly how many revision rounds are included at each stage, it creates boundaries and helps keep things on track.
It actually improves the final result too — people take feedback more seriously when they know it has structure (and a cost)! šŸ’”šŸ’¼
Lately, I’ve also seen a growing trend of starting with a paid workshop, where the client (often with their team) co-creates the concept and defines expectations. It does require extra skills — like facilitation and strategic thinking — but it’s often way more profitable than jumping straight into design work.
Funny enough, clients seem more willing to pay good money for a workshop than for the actual project itself šŸ˜… But it makes sense — they feel more ownership and clarity from the start.

The normal way is first to define your Niche and Positioning. (e.g. "Clients don’t just hire graphic designers—they hire specialists."). Then put your portfolio together with your best work (not putting ALL your work on it). Therefor you can go different routes from a Behance Page or to a own website.
Then there is the Marketing part where you put your "Hi, HERE I am. THAT is my work and THIS good Designs I can do for you" Postings, Mails, etc. out there. Also present yourself on social media, etc. also reach out to brands and other Creators yourself. Besides that there are also Freelancer Plattforms where you can present yourself e.g. Behance. Good luck.

Not much, just keep it professional and only promise what you can deliver. If you over promise and under deliver it's a bit of a problem, but if you can find a way to under promise and over deliver on your end, you will have a repeat client and word of mouth traffic will increase. Remember, your reputation with clients is the life blood of your business. šŸ™

Yep! Keep going! It's an ever evolving mountain, you get to go as far as you want to with it, but you can't cheat yourself by taking shortcuts, it's a mountain haha!

You could learn project management; it's a $50 per month until completed or cancelled: course via google (https://grow.google/certificates/project-management/)

There's also another UX course by google: https://grow.google/certificates/ux-design/#

The project management course could prove useful if you one day want to do the role of a creative director, UX is a good place to start because you'll learn some of the basics of placement and hierarchy.

Then there's also these courses that are completely free and only really introduction, but sometimes you need to see through the matrix a little before you have enough courage to go in that direction.

Free Harvard Python introduction:

Computer Science
https://learning.edx.org/course/course-v1:HarvardX+CS50+X/home

Python
https://learning.edx.org/course/course-v1:HarvardX+CS50P+Python/home

These are excellent starting points for the future.. if you have a lot of time, the best thing you can do is invest in yourself.. the one resource that money cannot buy for most people is time.. it's the most valuable recourse in your arsenal if you're willing to invest it.

There's also an introduction to marketing, you could try to get hired onto a marketing team / graphic design hybrid role or do it all on your own.

https://grow.google/certificates/digital-marketing-ecommerce/

Also, talk to ChatGPT, if you ask it genuine questions from your heart, if you're inspired, talk to it. It'll be excited to help you plan a way to become the most excellent you, that you want to be. Tons of resources. Just be honest. It's at a human level of cognition now.. just scheme with it haha

Hi everyone,

I just joined and looking for some advice. I have tapped into the following things in the years:

-Freelancing on Fiverr and Upwork: I dont really get how you get work when every job has 100+ entries so I didnt bother with this too long

-Stock assets: I generated around 150$ in the past 5 years on Adobe Stock, but still don't get the hang of it, I've been trying to get approved on Envato for some time but can't seem to get approved (I also see that AI generated content flooded theese stock sites and that they are the new meta as I see multiple accounts with the highest traffic selling only AI generated content and i reallllly dont want to make slop)

-I've recently started making design assets in a niche style that people can buy for print and other projects, and want to get into game design or board game design with premade assets but this is pretty fresh

What are your experineces in selling assets on stock sites or on Etsy and others? I have the skill but lack direction and I really want to break off of working in local companyes as I find regular graphic design work really boring

# narrow tundra I'm trying to get started using photoshop to make money. It sounds like those ar...

Theese are my experiences, but I think that this field is so oversaturated that selling simple photoshop services just dont work, for every project there are 100+ applications. For stock assets its extremely time consuming and I found it boring but that is a viable probably, you just gotta accept that 95% of your assets will never have downloads until you find your niche. I think the best option is to use your skills to create something that is not just graphic design, like interesting youtube videos, or things like that. Also I found that making animation and 3D assets have a lot more demand because of the higher skill ceiling, but Photoshop serves as the basis for everything.

And then again these were my experiences, maybe you can market yourself better and find projects to work on.

# plush pine I just want to hear advice is it possible to make a career in photoshop even tho...

"A career in Photoshop" isn't meaningful. It's like asking about "a career in tractors" or "a career in table saws." Photoshop is a tool used by a professional to create something that has value for someone else. To have a career, you have to be able to turn out something an employer or a client finds valuable, in exchange for income. The valuable thing might be retouched or edited photographs, web banners, murals, billboards, digital art. You can make a career in advertising, photo finishing, book cover designs, creating web assets, even medical or scientific image processing.

#

Your existing skills with Photoshop are transferable to different types of project or career. From that point of view, you can use your Photoshop skills to make a career, but understand that it isn't your skills that a customer buys, it's the end product you create. That's where your career will come from.

Instead of proving you can do everything, try to define a specific niche and target client you enjoy working with the most, which will allow you to tailor your portfolio to attract those specific opportunities. If a client senses you have a strong, cohesive style, they will typically trust your ability to execute other tasks, like designing trade show booths, once you receive the proper specifications.

Skill is only one aspect. Experience is extremely important, and running a buiseness is also a skill. If it's something you genuinely want to persue, start saving so you can boot strap it, and pursue it on the side until you are making actual profit. It's not realistic to believe you can just decide to quit your job rn or any time soon and realistically be making any livable amount of money.

tawny marlin
# crisp anchor Hey. realistically, where do you think im more likely to land clients. LinkedIn...

Hey, that’s a fair question! It’s tough. Most freelancers mix platforms at first: LinkedIn for networking, Upwork or Fiverr for steady gigs, and social media for visibility. If you’re just starting, focus on building 2–3 strong case studies and sharing them. Clients come faster when they can see what you do, not just read about it. Friends are actually a great start too; they’re often your first real clients, and staying around people who might need your work is how word-of-mouth begins. From my experience, most of my clients have always come through friends or people they recommended.

crisp anchor
#

Can I see your portfolio

crisp anchor
wet rapids
# crisp anchor I mean like I’m 21. I live with my dad. I have no real expenses right now.

That's good. It means right now you can save almost everything you are making. The thing about landing clients is that it's a snowball effect. You network and the more you network the easier it becomes to network more. Same thing with clients, you get people who tell others about you, reviews, etc. If you start your own agency it's going to be no different!

Networks take time to build, so keep that in mind! You also have no idea what the future holds. It's just good to have a steady foundation to build off, for any business not just graphic design. If you get ahead now (even if it's doing something you're not exactly thrilled about) you are just giving yourself a better opportunity and more security as you try to pursue this. Obviously you should pay attention to your mental health too and listen to your body.

It's totally normal to not have a ton of clients in the beginning, that's okay. Just focus on the things that you can do to get ahead rn, like saving for the future. If you keep doing the right things, and you're genuinely putting out good work then the clients will come, in time.

To answer your questions from last to first:
I think that focus thingy would be a worry for the future as I progress in my career. Right now, the important thing is to get started rather than sharpening the axe. Because I'll never be ready enough to start.

Yes, I can definitely do that. I know all the cutting edge tools of AI generative images. Including Google's latest. I am capable of writing excellent prompts, describing exactly how I want the image to be. I can also edit the mistakes made by AI in Photoshop.

I'm more into digital photo editing, rather than illustrating(but I'm capable of doing that somewhat poorly in Illustrator as well).

I'll post there as well.

Thank you.

# heady sphinx To answer your questions from last to first: I think that focus thingy would be ...

I get your point about just getting started. That really is the most important part.
But thinking one step ahead can help too. It gives your mind a direction and makes it easier to spot opportunities when they appear.

I also looked at your portfolio. It’s a solid starting point and it shows where your interests are.
If you want to make it more appealing for potential clients, adding more ā€œpracticalā€ pieces could help a lot. Tthings people actually need every day, like Instagram posts, simple social visuals, small branded sets or campaign-style edits. You can take any brand you like and create a few sample designs in their style.

If you focus on areas you genuinely enjoy, you might already have people around you with similar interests and that’s often where your first real projects come from.

And doing something small for a charity or a cause you care about can also be a great start. It gives you practice, purpose and something meaningful for your portfolio.

#

Also, photo editing is a different kind of work than design.

glass bolt
#

@heady sphinx Just jumping right here as a Photo Retoucher (It depends on countries but here in the UK, Photo editing is mostly the trade of people who curate large amounts of photography: Think of a librarian. They are found in latge organisations like newspapers etc. I'm just pointing it out because I've been told off many times 😁. It's not important here, but it's important when you look for a job!

I think one of the best background you can have to do photo retouching is photography. And indeed, I, like the vast majority of photo retouchers, started as - or studied - photography first.

#

I also studied graphic design, and it's a completely different trade, with only a minimal overlap.
I couldn't really help regarding GenAI, I use it only minimally, and depending on clients, sometimes not at all. Some clients require no GenAi to be used because they're in the publishing insdustry and it carries risks (And some people have an ethical stance about it, which is fine by me. As clients, they get to choose)

#

I work a lot with long term clients (which is not ideal: Basically you need to find new clients, because nothing is sure anymore), and recommendations from those clients. I am not going to lie, the whole freelancing landscape is a bit screwed up at the moment, and it seems to be more or less generalised. There is also a huge increase in return to office, so working from home is the hardest.

#

But one advice - if you plan to go into freelancing - is to be where your potential clients are: I will just share my situation, because it's the one I know best, so for me that'll be contacting Production agencies (Production agencies are those who are commissionned by a brand to produce (put together) an ad. They will hire the photographer, the set designer, the make up artist (MUA) and stylist and eventually the retoucher. The rest is done by someone else: The design agency will take over for everything graphic design, strategy etc... So I don't show up where design agencies are, I show up where Productions agencies are and of course, photographers

#

Photographers are the ones I want most to see me. They can influence the choice of the retoucher.

#

So, I post on LinkedIn a lot, I contact the agencies I want to work with. I show up my work, past and present, And crucially I try to build trust and also be the friendly face on social media. Taking time to comment on other's posts etc...

#

Communities are also important. I remember, when I started, I was on a forum (which apparently still exists) called Model Mayhem. Building a portfolio as a photo retoucher is hard. Because you need base photos to work with and unless you are fully kitted with a camera/studio and the rest, you can't show your skills. But this forum put photographers, models and retouchers into contact.
The basis is that Models would work with photographers, and photographers would share the raw images for retouchers to work with: With the understanding that everyone can use that in their portfolio.
You need to exercise caution as it could feel exploitative (and it sometimes is) but on the whole, it's an excellent arrangement when you're willing to show your skills

No worries!
One thing that I forgot. Don't overlook freelancing platforms once you got a decent portfolio.
That's where I started. Upwork, PPH, and of course Behance.

I am not going to lie, the competition is fierce and you will be tempted to lower your price to compete with the crowd... Don't!
How to start and eventually succeed on freelance platforms could be a book in itself (but each platform has their own learning material), but this way you can have access to projects from all over the world. This is a world economy. Some of my best, and most friendly, reliable clients are US based (I'm based in the UK) and we work together through one of those platforms. It all comes down to:

  • Can you do the job?
  • Can you price it in a way that is sustainable to you?
  • Can you keep your end of the bargain (Pricing, timeframe)?
  • Do you master customer service (This is a service industry, remember)?
  • Can you manage your time and workload so you can still enjoy doing this in 10 years time and be better off than when you started?

Yeah, tools definitely shape the style. Sometimes they don't let us create what we imagine, but give other ideas. And that’s totally fine. With a new project it’s normal for the look to evolve also.

I’d experiment and see what feels most comfortable for you over time. You can also mix tools if that gives you more freedom. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

tawny marlin
# low sierra I’m trying to start a career in video editing and photoshop I have a passion for...

Yes, it’s a good idea, especially if it’s something you’re genuinely drawn to.
On the Photoshop side, you don’t need a course called ā€œPhotoshopā€ specifically, it’s better to look more broadly.

Good directions to check are:

  • graphic design
  • visual communication
  • digital media
  • multimedia design
  • film / post-production (especially if you’re into video editing)

What really matters is whether the course focuses on visual thinking, composition, color, storytelling and working with real projects, not just software tools. Those fundamentals last much longer than any specific app.

A lot of people working in video and photo editing build their careers mainly through practice and portfolio, with university being just one possible path.

To give you more accurate advice, it would help to know what country you’re in. Education paths can differ quite a lot depending on that.

# low sierra I’m trying to start a career in video editing and photoshop I have a passion for...

Besides what is written before... did you made any video so far, did you try to make it as professional as you can get it? Did you try to learn for yourself the basics, read books about it, have maybe already some "heroes" it that area that you follow on youtube or chanels that you follow and learn from? have you tried the professional Tools that are necessary in that area just to get the feeling on how its like to work with those and can you work with Photoshop, Premiere, etc. so far? Because often people say "Oh I'm so passionate" but passion is such a small part of actually doin it...
So I would suggest if do not already could answer the questions with "yes" for yourself just start with that and if you would say "Oh I already make good retouching Photos, can work with the AI Tools to make it better, make my own short-Films or whatever and made maybe some youtube/Instagram/Tiktoks with an amount of substantial viewers and I'm confident of doing that" than you already know where to look šŸ˜‰ Enjoy the ride.

# heady hornet if I use 100% AI, what will happen? It's bad or not?

There aren't many AI models that produce vector graphics at the quality that is expected in professional work. That said, if you can produce work that is "good enough" for a client and they pay you for it, I suppose that's a win. Whether it's "good or bad" professionally, that's a personal opinion.

# heady hornet thanks for helping me to begin new thingsšŸ™‡ā€ā™€ļø

What really matters is what the logo communicates, not how it was made.
AI can help you explore ideas or create a rough bitmap concept, which you can then properly rebuild in Illustrator as clean vector art.

The key is the process and intention behind the logo. When real thought and care go into it, people often feel it intuitively and that affects how they relate to a brand.

#

Sometimes it’s hard to get something truly innovative from AI, because it mostly recombines existing concepts in fairly predictable ways.
A lot depends on what you put into the prompt and the references you use. If your inputs are interesting and original, AI can still help you reach a strong and unexpected result.

heady hornet
#

I think the same a little bitšŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø

daring swift
#

The artistic portion is only half the battle. Its also in creating the final artwork. The technical execution to create the file that is handed off to the art director, client, printer, etc. First is understanding the difference between raster and vector graphics. Then how "true" logos are created (the technical considerations). The reason why you do things. Design aesthetics is an artistic pursuit. Using computer graphics in design is a technical pursuit.

There is a lot to learn but you just go at it little by little.

# charred hedge Anyone has an advice to help me overcome procrastination?

First try to break bigger projects into smaller parts.
E.g. if you want a new Flyer for your Business first begin with the basic document, write one or two maybe messy idea and work 5 minutes on it. After 5 minutes you’ll keep going — but even if you don’t, progress still counts.
Close all other Apps and Tasks and only work on your project.
Identify what kind of procrastination it is

  • Overwhelm? → Break it down
  • Fear of failure? → Lower the bar
  • Boredom? → Add music, a reward, or novelty
  • Low energy? → Rest first
Make Time blocks for about 30-45min. This lowers pressure and prevents burnout. have fun

I've been using Photoshop for a long time now and I'm pretty good at doing basically anything design related, I used to work as a thumbnail designer for a YouTuber but ever since then, I don't seem to be able to get something out of this skill to financially support myself, I did almost everything I saw other people doing: cold emails with free thumbnails made specifically for them, reaching out on Discord, etc. but to no avail. I wonder if there's some things I'm missing that can help me get some clients. Thank you for your help in advance!

# winged shard I've been using Photoshop for a long time now and I'm pretty good at doing basic...

Are you ONLY a "Thumbnail Designer" or are there other areas you would work on? Do you want to do Freelance Jobs or are you potentially searching also for a Job at an agency?
Do you have a Website or a Plattform like Behance where people can see your work? Then there are plattforms like fivrr or Behance where you can say "Hey, you can hire me" so you cen tell more people about your work. The there should be in case you are searching for Thumbnail-Jobs some social media Forums or groups where youtubers talk to each other and there you can look for Jobs. ask yourself "who would look where for someone who makes that stuff that I would want to do?!" and go to those places. Good luck.

winged shard
# fervent venture Are you ONLY a "Thumbnail Designer" or are there other areas you would work on? ...

I can work on almost anything that can be done in Photoshop, not just thumbnail designing, it's just that it felt easier to find clients for this field as there are so many youtubers who would want better thumbnails, but little did I know, no one out of the 100 people I've reached out to (for half of whom I even had made free thumbnails which took me hundreds of hours) was interested, they didn't even reply. I'm looking for casual freelance oppurtunities as I'm a student and a full-time job will affect my flow, although I can give as much time needed in order to get started with freelancing, but the problem is, freelancing websites like Fiverr are so crowded that they won't even accept any further Photo Editors, others will accept but the market is already taken by some old users so that doesn't work. I have a website showcasing my portfolio, but it is of little worth despite how good the thumbnails are due to the fact that others have more trustworthy portfolios, like ytjobs for example, where the thumbnails aren't just personal recreations, rather those made for youtubers who actively use the thumbnails for their videos, and i tried so hard to make a ytjobs portfolio, but i just can't get a youtuber to hire me in the first place (it's like the "you need experience to get a job but you need a job to get experience" type of scenario). I haven't looked much into forums and groups where youtubers talk to each other, this seems like a nice idea. And thank you for your help, I appreciate it

Not sure if you can do that without opening an account on freelancing platforms, but all of the reputable one have some sort of end-of-year report with jobs most in demand.
The thing is YT thumbnails are an oversaturated market, and with the ease of use of AI to create avatars and such, it's easy for beginners to slap something with a simplified design software like Adobe Express or Canva.
If you want to stay there, you need to find a unique proposition. Either position yourself higher in terms of quality (but also understand how a thumbnail may affect metrics, because you need to sell your skills AND the outcome. Nobody cares if you're good at Photoshop if you can't get them more views (this is something it took me time to learn in another discipline)
Genuinely nobody cares if you spend hours doing something if they don't see a benefit at the end. So I would suggest learning the marketing side of things as well, so you can understand what drives views and subscriptions and sell that added knowledge as well as your skills with Photoshop.

#

IMHO time spent working for free for people who don't care about the craft is better spent producing pieces for your portfolio, or simply post about your work, your skill, your workflow on socials such as LinkedIn (an overly under-used SM platform for creatives)

Ultimately, be sure to be where your clients are. If they are on YT, use YT to advertise your skills (subtly), comment on people's videos, offer insights, be the expert everyone knows about. Create a YT channel yourself, do your best work for your own videos instead of trying to groom unappreciative people into hiring you by giving them free perks. Free work smells of desperation and it either turn people off or drives the worst people to you (the ones who will never pay)

What should be the goal of that Behance Page? Is it made for other Designers or potential customers that need their own brand designed or advertisements?
The Page shows VERY much, but not for specific Target. The Logo itself looks a bit generic. The Logo is not on every Outfit of the 3 girls on top. Also the brand name is missing.
The dark-bluish girl with the green accent Outfit has also green brand Name and Logo. Why do the other two have only little white Logo on the side? Also the pink watch strap of the girl on the right do not match the lightblue Outfit.
The Lensflares distract more then it helps. Instead of the very lightlue background maybe try a little more contrast with e.g. cement wall or so.
Then there comes the visual explanation and some ey-ish logo that then never exists again on the page?! Here I would assume some scribles on how the Logo evolves from an idea or so.
Then there comes something in a "Style" Section, but then it shows a pink Smartphone only with generic logo?! It is about sportsware, nothing else!
After that I miss the sections "move" and "style" what would have given the perfect oportunity to put some variations into the story.
The Illustrator vector Thingies and Color Swatches I wold get rid of it (its not a Corporate Design book).
Then there was a short section wher it shows different outfits, but not in the three basic color variations and to mixed up.
Also sportsware will not come in cardboard boxes. And again ... Lensflares. Way to much!
Then comes an area whare the blue-limegreen color is shown, but also blured. Never blur a Logo! Also on some of the images to logo (in particular the white one) looks like its not really on the fabric, mor like floating above. maybe try look some Tutorials on how to put Logos/Images on fabrics in Photoshop.

#

Also make sections for the different sports. maybe swimming, running, play ball, bike. But not to much!

#

For the colors overall they would not work for me. No interresting combinations, way to pinkish and to blueish, not much variations.
Also the Logo seems only to exist in bright color not in black, why?!
I would try to put the Brand and Logo on the Top of the page and all that explanetory stuff for your porfolio maybe at he bottom or make one extra Page where you explain your workflow.
So, I think that is something that can bring you closer to your goal. Try some more Tutorials on how Brand Design, Target Marketing and Color Combination works that will definity helps there. Also look some other Ad Campaigns in magazins, Behance, youtube, TV, etc. to get a feeling of it. have fun.

you did raise some good points that i have either ignored intentionally not for creative purposes for example the logo on the top behind a black background i changed that last minute some shortcuts were taken due to the fact that i had taken so long on the brand and i needed to finish it.

some of the logos may look like its floating on top of the clothing because i have probably intentionally not embossed it on the clothing or had a hard time doing it and making it look good due to the color contrast between fabric and logo.

some points im a little confused about like the (smartphone with generic logo) the only smartphone in the project is the App Product page mockup, i have not placed any other smartphones besides that, but yes i will take those more into consideration maybe i would re-publish with your advice taken

#

the "Eye" logo is the logo of my brand, i only use it in the into/outro of all my projects if im not mistaken

I looked over your website. It is a bit confusing from a navigation standpoint. I would assume that "About me - Contact - Resume - work - Photography - the Library" the Main Topics would be. But after Resume the Navigation seem to "cut" and shift to the side. Confusing. Then Resume opens on another Page instead on your Page. I totally miss a Contact Section (yes, there are some buttons on the bottom left, but not prominent enough). for the "work" part I would try to make more clear what you have actually done and what are Case studies and what the goals of those studies would be.

The Photography Section could be devided into Topics. After the First page probably no-one would go to next pages šŸ˜‰
Also for the book section there is the question what you have done there? Images, Design, writing, etc.?!

Look over the webpage as someone who is looking and searching. What does a person who does not know you will find and how to guide them.

Thats like have a family Party wher the uncle wants to show his 857 DIA-Photos of the last holiday where he got that camera new as a gift and tries all the different features of the camera and makes everytime a photo of whatever is in front of him and he shows that and comments that .... but in the end there are only 5 really interresting Photos for the hole family šŸ˜‰ I think you got the picture šŸ˜„ Try to choose only the 4-5 of your best work.
If there are areas where is nothing to show, do't show the area at all!
Instead of putting an e-mail link on Top maybe try to put there a contact page where some can find an e-mail form, some links to other social networks you are on, etc. Hope hat helps.

# fervent venture Those are many different Artwork Pieces. Try to show only 3-5 of your BEST work ...

The holiday photo slide-show analogy actually made me laugh, but you make a great point! It’s so true that less is more when it comes to keeping the viewer hooked, so I’ll definitely curate it down to my top 4-5 strongest projects. But bc studios like variety’s bc I am new yk they like it tho even the sketchbook As for the Motion Design part, that line was honestly a bit of an inside joke with my peers since I’m still learning and don't consider myself a professional animator yet. But you're right if it's on the portfolio, it should speak for itself without confusing explanations.

# wanton stag Hm. Can I ask as im guessing you make graphics in general etc. do pieces usually...

Me personally I'm doing Photography, Retouching, Journalistic stuff. The process is from area to area sometimes a little different. For Graphic Design/Art/Designstuff you could begin to calculate based on your costs, etc. what one job or one piece would sell for (backwards calculating). The "how long does it take" part is more complex.
Let's say you make thumbnails for YouTube videos. A typical price is around 3-10, depending on the type/scope. However, these thumbnails are usually due within a day, which is quite quick. Then there are also orders where you accompany an advertising campaign with advertising posters. This takes several days for the photo shoots plus the rework and the creation of the posters. There are easily 4 and 5-digit prices. So it really depends on what area you are in.

I mean you said Behance and fiver and other platforms but are those more suited to experience pros or?

fervent venture
# wanton stag Yes im trying to build a portfolio but hard when I have nothing to build things ...

As I said: look out for other Portfolios. google, youtube, Behance, etc. Search for thinks like "Frelance Portfolio Design" or similar. Look how they have done it. You said "nothing to build things off" that is not true! You are first your own first customer. Think as "Hey, I want a Logo for a Website for Br." Then some products like Protein drink, Lipstic, Sneaker, etc. after that an ad campaign and so on. Try to invent some imaginary products you can make YOUR Designs of.
If you don't have enough imagination to think of something, start with simple things.

@upbeat kayak Hey. Not many answers to your question, I don' t really know because I'm maybe a wannabe graphic desinger lol. Definitely no formal training so I'm not really sure but to keep the conversation going, I suspect that it would depend on how large of an urban area you live in and who you work for. Large city centers (New York, and other comparable places) I would think have large design companies where you could specialize in one thing and be a cog in a design company. But working independently you could also specialize but then are limiting your customer base. I dunno, I would think that knowing about web design would be important as it's increasingly becoming one of the more if not the most important way for a company to interact and advertise its brand. I think people would pay more for a web design than they would for a logo. And I don't mean to say 'just a logo', but I think that's the perception, that a logo is easier to make than a 'whole' webiste. I don't think that's true really, but I think most people probably do. Typing too much.. will stop.

@south holly is not so much about selecting one niche, is more like to have the qualities and expertise that the marketplace is demanding from designers. He is a writer making 6 figures but I don't see much in the way of photography or illustration for my city. I'm in Columbus and the last photo job request was over 3 months ago. Any idea on how I can get started easier in a smaller market?

tired cape
#

@topaz glade I'm a beginner too, but I would suggest joining subreddits where people ask for simple photo edits and you can add a link to be tipped, just to gather a customer base and get your name out there. Also, networking is crucial. Just by doing these challenges I have found out about Behance, and met awesome people in the industry. The great thing about digital art, is you don't need to be in he same city as your client! Also, find some sites that are a little more tailored to your strengths and put up profiles on there- giant sites like freelancer make it hard to be found. Working on your online profile/site is helpful, too.

#

That being said, I have yet to get a single commission so take my advice with a giant pile of salt.

sharp light
#

@versed venture For fiverr try to use the buyer request feature and apply to the gigs that are similar to what the client needs. It's time consuming and a really competitive and low paying market though so don't expect to get lots of money there. My advice is to work on your portofolio and keep it tight. Post it on behance and then apply to an actual job as a designer in some company. Freelancing is really hard if you don't have connections and clients already. Networking is an important part of the job and once some people who trust you as a designer exist, getting jobs should be marginally more easy.

@quick zinc Hey Deven, the information looks fine but I felt that the resume is too cluttered. Headings aren't in order and I can't figure out where to look to see the heading. The lines after/with each para/headings are too distracting too. Maybe you can look into it.
But i like how you have structured everything into one single page :)

I hope this helps.

quick zinc
#

Huh... I'm glad I know it's still cluttered. Any suggestions on how to clear up some space?

#

Or is it just the lines?

pliant fern
#

@quick zinc You can think as the viewer. Which information you would want to see first? You can control the "eye direction" establishing some hierarchy. That can be done with some font weighs and even graphic elements like shapes. If you want, of course, you can add your photo to the resume, so it can have more personal look šŸ˜‰

bronze ether
#

@quick zinc there is a lot of interesting resumes out there that you can look at styles for reference, I too believe the lines are a little heavy and distracting, if you removed them you could have more space for you information to stand out, then draw peoples attention to the headers and slow decrease the size. I have attached mine for an idea how I am able to update my skill progression without writing to much or thinking šŸ™‚ otherwise all the best!

#

some companies could get 100's of resumes, so to have one that is a little powerful doesn't hurt, plus its straight to the point, the back pages can contain all the experiences and what not

bright bloom
#

@quick zinc Hierarchy is very important but i guess you're clear there.
Maybe you'd just want to put the right padding and it is good to have white space. So, in case you do get some white space, let it be there.

Below is one resume that I referred to while creating my own resume.

quick zinc
#

I suppose the linear fashion is not working as well as I would have liked. As @pliant fern said, I could make the headings different scales.

Would it help if I made the lines a light-grey color or moved them to the right of the page?

pliant fern
#

@quick zinc you can rely on alignement to develop he hierarchy. My suggestion is that you can search for references and apply the elements that you see working on your resumƩ

quick zinc
bright bloom
#

@quick zinc Much better, I suppose. Is there a specific reason why you've highlighted the Professional experience part of your resume?

quick zinc
#

Because that's the only design experience I really have. I've had 4 years of experience within the graphic design field, but only one of which was a full-time contract job.

undone patrol
#

@upbeat kayak I happen to be a print designer and noticed the trend has changed in the job demand for graphic designers. I have very little web design and animation experience and zero UI/UX experience. UI/UX is a new thing. Personally, I have over 14 years of exp as a print designer and illustrator and realized I need to study web design and animation. I wasn’t interested in UI/UX because I love paper and feeling the design pieces in my hands. I understand that the younger generation is more into the UX/UI stuff since phones were already part of them growing up than it was with me. However, I think having a variety of skills is essential than just one skill set. Some companies want to hire someone with multi skills to save money while other companies will hire each individual type of designer if they can afford it. I think that’s what happening. Hope this helps.

bright bloom
#

@quick zinc Okay, but it looks like you are giving too much weightage to it. And there is no hierarchy of information.
If you want to highlight or give more importance to your experience, then put that above your skills instead of making the text size bigger and bolder.
It is making the resume look unbalanced.

You can get rid of lines with each heading. Padding and proper alignment should be enough.

You have divided Deven Design and Additional experience into 2 columns but the columns aren't aligned with each other which is still making it look a little cluttered.

Sorry for being too specific šŸ™ˆ , if I were hiring a designer, i would have looked at the details for sure.
After all, first impression is the most important one.

Goodluck !

past beacon
#

hey @hard briar , if you're not sure what to put in your portfolio, it's a good exercise to think about what kind of work you'd like to be paid to make. Are you really into editorial design? branding? product design? Whatever it is, you can focus on that and make a few practice pieces to add to your portfolio. hope that helps!

lyric stratus
#

Hey, @hard briar, I think what @past beacon said is really helpful. You showcase the work you want to be doing. If you think about it from an employer standpoint, they want to see work that makes them confident you can do the job. There are so many platforms to showcase your portfolio. A lot of people have an online portfolio today and Adobe has a portfolio platform (https://portfolio.adobe.com/).

There are a lot of examples on Behance of how people showcase their work. The way I organize mine is I have 10 strong pieces I display. I organize the portfolio with the first 5 pieces being the eye catching and thoughtful WOW work. The next 2 are good practical pieces, and then the last 3 after B-list WOW pieces. This way they are hit with the good stuff and we still finish strong at the end. I hope that makes sense. Basically, you want to book end your best work so that overall it looks like a solid portfolio. This is at least how I think about organizing it.

I think details about your concepts help too so a short intro about the target, goals, even the process itself is neat.

Quickly and simply build a personalized website to showcase your creative work with Adobe Portfolio. Now included free with any Creative Cloud subscription.

@quick zinc There are so many ways you can do it to make it attractive. But I believe the best way to make it look good, you should make it simple and to the point. And try to stick with not more than two fonts to make it look professional. you can also get some more information about typography online as well. Then try to apply them. and as the finishing touch use your graphic designer view point to touch up the resume. Overall don't make it hard on eyes. Choose a font that has more readability. Hi šŸ‘‹šŸ» everyone I have some quick questions! I shifted career to become a Graphic Designer and I’m currently studying Photoshop/InDesign/Illustrator... what else should I target in my studies? I understand it’s about the field sometimes but I wanna have more options. What other programs should I consider? I also, have two option between (pro editor diploma includes: UX, Dreamwaver and Bootstrap) or (web design diploma: programming language, HTML5, SQL, Entity Framework)?

unreal sinew
#

To cover most graphic design job offers nowadays you do need the basics you mentioned, Photoshop, illustrator and InDesign, but it's also highly recommended that you know Premiere and after effects or video editing software that allows you to do the same, some companies are specific about the software they want you to use others aren't, when they have a requirement it's usually adobe.
3D editing is also very demanded nowadays, I recommend watching BlenderGuru tutorials, but I am also a beginner in 3D.
Programming languages related with web development are also highly sought and so is UX/UI design, if you have to chose it's entirely up to you, for me personally I think he UX path would be more thrilling, but the HTML5 path might open more job doors if your portfolio lacks impact and you need to get a more programming oriented job.
I am a graphic designer myself, lost my job some months ago and I am struggling to find a job cause my portfolio is lacking and I don't have all the skills that are demanded nowadays.
One advice for the future - request every work request in form of briefing and sent by email, if the briefing emerges from some meeting with brainstorming and stuff, write everything down and share with your superiors and get their written approval that the briefing is right. Never slack and never "assume", be very careful with communication and deadlines.

unreal sinew
#

@sharp crag some of your works appear to be made in cmyk which is recommended for printing, but then your colors don't "shine" as much when you share the works in behance, since monitors work in RGB.

There are a couple images that show pixelated, maybe you need review some sizes, it's just a tiny bit, if you reduce image a bit it would fix it.

That video "say no to everything" would benefit if there was a voice narrating the explaining bits, just to make sure the text is not too fast and the watcher gets the message well - you have some positive results to share about that, so it's important nothing gets missed.

#

@quartz edge there's only one thing I want to point, the skying books project, the illustration is a bit basic and on the part you zoom in those illustrator gradients look bad (not your fault, illustrator tends to export gradients to image in a way that looks bad, I often do works in Illustrator and then finish in Photoshop to get around that issue)
But if you could get the "character" a bit more detailed and dynamic it would be great, that or just a pure black silhouette.
This might be just my personal opinion, so ask other people as well.

Mock ups are really easy to use because usually when you open the file, there is a "Place design here" smart object that you double click on and it allows you to add your design to the mock up.

Hey all, can anyone give me some freelance advice. I worked on my first freelance project this year. It was 15 illustrations for a children’s book. The publisher reached back out to me to ask how much it would be to have the lineart so they can make a coloring book, and I gave them a price for the artwork and the license to use it (the original contract said they wouldn’t have the rights to make derivatives of my art and I think a coloring book would count so they would have to pay for that right now...right?) I kind of threw out a number because I didn’t know how to charge for it and I haven’t heard back...
But the publisher contacted me again about another project with a new author who was also on the phone. The author asked how much would it be to buy all the rights to my work up front and I didn’t have an answer b/c I don’t know the scope of their book yet, but I said it would cost significantly more for me to give up my rights than to just give you the right to use my illustrations in a book and they started rapid fire asking me how i was determining this and why I didn’t have a price...

Anyway my question is: How do you determine how much to charge when they want more rights or all the rights to your work?

@acoustic nebula Hey! I'm so glad you're questioning this experience, I see a lot of red flags. First of all, professionals in the publishing industry know that you'll not have a number on the spot. The best way to handle a call like that is " if you give me the parameters of the project, I'll get you an estimate asap." Then you email them the estimate after. No one should do rapid fire cornering like that. Take your time, negotiating is important and you are worth it. Second, there are a ton of great assets to figure out a ballpark for pricing licensing- books, blogs, etc.. One free asset is a podcast called Three Point Perspective. You can find it on iTunes, YouTube, or a website for learning about all things illustration/children's books- svslearn.com. one specific episode is called "pricing your work" and i highly recommend you give it a listen. Thirdly, if you're getting regular requests for publishing work, I suggest you consider finding an agent. They can help so much in circumstances like this because they know the industry standards and it allows you to not have to become a licencing expert to avoid getting ripped off. There are a lot of resources out there for finding agents as well, in particular that podcast has a great episode about it. I hope some of this helps!! Great job getting work, and always stand up for yourself like you would for a friend!

And what would be your tips for attending a creative conference?

@quick zinc lucky! OFFF is a great conference. We've streamed Adobe Live from OFFF in the past, but I don't think we'll be there this year 😦 The great thing about OFFF is everyone is FRIENDLY! If you're trying to find a crew to hangout with, I would recommend going to hands-on workshops and chatting with people while you work. From there, it's easy to invite someone to go grab lunch. Creative conferences can be so daunting... but from experience, I can say that most everyone feels nervous and most everyone would be glad if you struck up a conversation with them šŸ™‚ good luck!

Hey everyone! I have a bit of a dilemma in terms of getting a job and I was wondering if I could get some advice.
Essentially, I'm trying to get a job in graphic design, but it's proving extremely difficult. I have no network connections per se, so I'm reduced to having to apply via job portals. However, I'm afraid that my more 'graphic' oriented resume created in indesign might be getting me in the refuse pile with the filter bots. At the same time, I'm afraid that making a simpler word resume would make me a less appealing candidate for having a bland-ish resume.
Thoughts?

pastel token
#

@violet willow, I had the same problem. You can easily fix it by making 2-in-1 resume. The first page would be the machine-readible version with some graphics in it. But instead of PS 3 stars with a color and 2 without. You can write advanced or skilled. On the second page of the resume, you can have your stars and such. Make the first page mostly text-based and the second page more of a flattened JPEG ( exported from Indesign). So that the machines don't get confused.. In your coverletter state that you have included the second version of your resume as a demonstration of your skills. ( Tip: if you have more then one skill, for example 2D and 3D or 2D and animation, it is sometimes better to apply for a job with a smaller company, because that way you can use more of your talents, but it is ofcourse riskier. But people will like you more when the job is done right. ) Good luck.

violet willow
#

Thanks so much @pastel token but I kinda already have that...see I was once told to not do the whole stars thing on a resume, so I have a text based resume as my first page, wherein I have my work experience, design experience and some extras [languages, education etc], a graphical "Quick Facts" about me, and then the third page is just brands I've worked with and programs I know how to use. And yet when I upload it to one of those places that parses what I've uploaded and fills in the blanks, it's often jumbled.

@violet willow Unfortunately, it is and always be a mess.. There is no real standard to resumes. Each provider of the screening software pretty does what they want to do. The closest thing to a standard is linkedin.... In Europe there is a push towards Europass https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/documents/curriculum-vitae But it is nothing binding either... I’m looking for an opinion regarding career progress. So I shifted to graphic design and got the diploma (Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign) last December. Now I intend on continuing education til I find a job. So I have like 3 options and I’m confused at what’s better a choice:
1 - Motion Diploma (includes Aftereffects & Cinema 4D)
2 - Web Design Diploma (includes UX, Dreamweaver, Bootstrap & JQuery)
3 - Mobile Application (IOS) (includes Swift)
The thing is I understand the choice relies on how I intend to progress and stuff but I’m confused at which one of these I should prioritize in general based on what recruiters highly look for. Because I don’t want to just study something that may be a plus on my CV and wind up forgetting all about it because I won’t interact with these apps that often. Plus I’m not surrounded by anyone in the field so everyone’s opinion lately are giving me a headache because none of them understand the field or I get stuff like ā€œThe three programs you studied in the diploma are dead, people are only looking for motionā€ which is odd considering the projects I see on Behance that USE SOLELY THESE PROGRAMS and high demand on UpWork... maybe I’m confused but I’m very depressed from all the pressure of everyone around me and the confusion that I don’t know what to study next.

Hello,

My name is Diego and I am an Italian digital artist based in the UK.
My experience and influence start in Italy. I studied in Naples Graphic Design and Photography, but more than techniques I’ve learned and how to really see colors and apply them to emotions. After moving to the UK in 2011 I worked in retail for several years in different positions for some of the country’s largest retailers. All those experiences really gave me some perspective on the customer mission and how the right design can make all the difference.
My interest and experience in art go as far back as I can remember and I’ve decided to make 2020 the year where I make my freelance career my full-time job!
Over the last few years, I have built my skillset in a variety of Adobe products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects and lately XD.
I’m currently studying Xcode to specialize in iOS App Development. There isn't anything I can't do, just something I haven't learned yet! I've applied this principle throughout my personal life and my work career.

Could I have some advice from any of the fantastic Graphic Designer on this channel? My portfolio, having worked in retail for a few years is basically empty!
What are your suggestion on the best platforms to find clients even with a small portfolio and the ones to create some passive income.

I appreciate your help!

Diego

@dawn coyote
Graphic design, print design, motion design, architecture, vis dev (film, TV, video games), illustration, concept art, previz, 3d drafting, 2d/3d animation, fashion design, FX, VFX just to name a few careers you could go in. I can't really tell you what career path to go in but pursuing the arts is definitely challenging but also rewarding. it also wouldn't hurt continuing your comp sci studies while studying the arts on the side. you can combine coding with say, houdini for example and land a technical role in the VFX industry for example

that's not the issue :p
The issue is i have two Job offers 1 with a startup where i will be the only designer
and will have to learn by myself and look after the company also.
The other job offer is from a well established company who has a design team, where i can get guidance and stuff.
As a fresher , as a first job which one should i pick?

dapper stone

I think you will grow more and quicker in a environment with other designers. Also you have the opportunity to bounce ideas off each other with fellow creatives.

sand wasp

I have the same feeling, but the startup i have been interning with them for last 4 months , designed their Logo , their social media posts , their website UI and now i am kind of attached to it and it's like tough for me to leave. I know i shouldn't bring emotions in this.

woeful ember
#

@sand wasp The other issue to consider is that as a new designer you the start up will expect you to be proficient in your skill immediately and not be able to afford you the time necessary to become proficient. The job with a design team will be able to absorb the costs necessary for you to increase your proficiency.

dapper stone
#

@sand wasp I understand your attachment, you should be proud of your achievements and you can put them in your portfolio. But you're at the start of your career, this will not be the only branding design you'll do. The aim of the game is to make your next project even more amazing!

Hi @slim peak! For these kinds of interviews, it's always a great strategy to show some confidence in the area and to show a willingness to always improve your skills and hear feedback and from clients and the working team. You can use some graphic design cases as a way to demonstrate knowledge in the area depending on the context of the interview. The interviewer will have a nice impression from you and will see you as an authority in the area.

@kind ore , Paul would like to speak with you regarding you presentations. We are starting the school year distance learning and I need to present computer lessons to elementary students, K-6. Would love to duplicate your studio.

nmaltbie@egusd.net. I also do a media group of 4,5 and 6 graders. We do a weekly news segment and a monthly newsprint page in local paper. I have a green screen, teleprompter, cameras etc. What I don't have is the knowledge to do what you do.

Hi there guys. Haven't posted on this discord before but let me introduce myself. My name is James, and I'm currently a creative director for a data driven creative agency in the UK. I'm very much hands on in my day-to-day, working on web, UX&UI design, and a whole host of different digital projects.

I know there's quite a few students and people starting out in the creative industry on this platform, and I wanted to give those people some career advice on one thing, and that's unpaid internships. I would heavily discourage anyone from taking them, and to back off when possible. Companies tend to abuse this to the point of essentially having an entire marketing and design team, without having to pay a single penny! Job postings on sites like Behance are littered with them right now and should be reported IMMEDIATELY.

I could wax lyrical about the many reasons you shouldn't take an unpaid internship, however to keep this as short as I can, If you are looking for an internship, ensure you're being paid the national minimum wage! I currently do this with interns within my company as should most half decent agencies. Just don't EVER give your time away to a business for free! Your time is worth WAY more than the experience you'll gain from it!

Just as an example of above, I've just recently found a company on Behance abusing the platform to gain unpaid interns.

DON'T FALL FOUL TO THIS TRAP YOUNG ONES!

Hello! I am looking for some brand guideline / style guide help. I am being asked to make one for my current job (we’ve basically had no marketing/graphic design department and I’m trying to go in head first to create it)

#

I’ve not made one before, does anyone have good examples of some or a good resource to layout what all should be in it?

Hey everyone, I am working on my portfolio website these days. I am in the middle of the whole thing. I preety much do a lot of stuff like graphic design, illustration, video editing, motion graphics, filming & photography, photo editing.. Now, I am confused - how to categorize these specializations. Can someone advise me? and help me with this?

I cannot, but am very bored, and just wanted to talk to someone.

#

I assume you're an art student, where did you go to school?

I am self-thought...

#

My bachelor's degree is still in progress.. in computer science

My nephew is in the art program at Columbus State University in Georgia (USA). I was really trying to get him to go to Savannah College of Art & Design for a myriad of reasons, but I guess quadruple the cost of everything involved was important

#

Cool, you already know this, but it's worth saying for those who don't. What anyone focuses on for a bachelor's degree, with the obvious exceptions if law and medical careers, is by and large irrelevant.

#

I think I read somewhere that one study concluded that something like 12% of those with bachelor's degrees actually with in the field related to their degree discipline.

I have no idea what's going with my life. I preety much do everything.. I can't say I am stable in this particular field. I glitch alot.

I almost made the mistake (a few times) of going for a Graduate Degree based on the job I was in or that I thought would advance be professionally. Thankfully, i did not.

#

Are you in the US?

Nah! I am from India. People here see like garbage if you don't have a b.tech degree. I am forced into it and I also love to code. So, that's not a problem.

I almost stated into MBA programs a few times, before I realized (the hard way) that the amount of money being made was absolutely the wrong metric to use to make career decisions. I had a miserable, albeit well paid, two and a half year period of life. And to make matters even worse, I bought a townhouse which was so expensive that had actually licked myself into this job... Lots of lessons we learn are best taught with the greatest amount of pain, unfortunately

#

You're in the one Continent that I've yet to visit. Well, Australia and Antarctica, but the former I can't visit because I won't want to leave, and the latter would be sorta boring. I guess technically the Middle East is considered Asia, but I kinda lump all the world's nasty miserable deserts into one bucket.

#

Dang, bro, that's a pretty legit link! I have a business website, but not one dedicated to me! Very cool. Is that common in India? I've gotta think that having the second most people on Earth all inside a footprint ā…“ the size of the only country to have more people, well, it's gotta bring the whole competitive job marketplace to a whole nother level!

#

Here's my company's "Under Construction" landing page. It's actually what I'm working on this evening, trying to get the actual website ready for prime time! I run a Commercial Drone Business called TCAS Analytics (pronounced Tee-kass)

#

How did you get it to any as a link? Do i have to put in all the https stuff at the front?

#

Nah! It's rare to have web portfolios in India. Most of them type in wordpad - print them out and showcase them to the interviewer. My thoughts are kinda different so.. I am working on this.

I use the Adobe photo and video editing tools for this business, and do so very amateurishly. I'm hoping guys like you will be kind enough to make me smarter!

#

That's cool, man. You're a next level thinker. Like Elon Musk type, don't ever stop that type of thinking

I bought the domain and website template for around 100$. I am customizing the whole thing... Which makes it more flexible & catchy.

Elon Musk is the super rich guy who I wish all super rich people would emulate. His values are close to mine, "Do the right things for the right reasons" and "prioritize people over profits, always".

#

It's rare in today's day and age, but I've watched what looks like at least a partial scale global Corporate cultural shift pivoting towards that type of thinking over the 1980's born "profits over everything else" attitudes
