This is why I've suggested (multiple times, I think) that you do the tutorials that come with Photoshop. So that you learn and understand the basic tools and techniques.

I've only been using it properly for 10 years or so - and the biggest challenges is the fact it does so much. - MOST of which you won't ever touch.

I would call myself a 'professional' but there are plenty of bit's I've never bothered to learn. - simply because commercially, for me, the knowledge isn't needed.

Learning photoshop is just about learning tiny little 60 second 'tools' or 'tricks' and then bringing them together.

E.g.
Start with some basic cropping, then straightening horizon... - maybe move onto brightness sliders...

Watch a few videos on adjustment layers and then layer 'masks'.

This allows you to then do things like making an image greyscale and then have a single 'rose' or 'sportscar' in full colour 🙂

Hey everyone,

I have this photo from Good Will Hunting where Sean Maguire (Robin Williams) and Will Hunting are sitting on a bench, overlooking a pond. The shot is from behind them, capturing their backs.

I’m trying to edit out Will Hunting so that it’s just Sean Maguire sitting alone on the bench. I’ve been working on this for hours, using different methods, including Photoshop and GIMP, but I just don’t have the experience to make it look right.

What I need is for someone to:

•    Remove Will Hunting entirely: This includes his legs, torso, and head.
•    Blend the environment: The sidewalk, shadows, bench, and pond should all look natural, as if Will was never there.
•    Make it seamless: The bench should look uninterrupted, the shadows on the ground should still match the environment, and the pond should blend smoothly.

I’ve tried my best, but I just can’t get it to look right. If anyone here could help me out with this, I’d be incredibly grateful—more than words can express. Thank you so much in advance!

By the way, yes, I did make this with ChatGPT just because I’m a very poorly worded person, and I’m very disoriented in the way that I speak and the way I talk. This is just me trying to use another application that can better formalize and kind of look for and better explain what I need because if I was to write this by myself, it’d be very confusing and disoriented. So if it feels very formal, that’s why.

So there can be a quite a bit to learn when it comes to setting up custom brushes. Particularly, getting the pressure sensitivity right with your device and setting it specifically for how you draw.

You can bump up the Smoothing. Just be aware that the higher you turn that up, the slower (more laggy) the strokes will be. You have to draw the stroke and let it catch up. So you have to be aware of that.

Yes. You can draw vector paths with the Pen Tool and then Stroke the path with the selected Brush.

I would probably draw a vector shape and customise it. Then copy it and convert the copy into a smart object. A blur smart filter then provides the necessary blurring.
Can be changed flexibly until everything fits.

Well, that is assigning a Stroke to the line you drew.

You can draw the path (not a Shape... no lines or fills). The right-click on the path and choose "Stroke Path" and it will use the selected brush to draw a stroke down along the path you drew.

Plotting shapes is tedious. Its not like drawing. However, that is easier if all you have is a mouse. Invest in a cheap Wacom Tablet if you really want to draw. Nothing expensive. Like the 50 dollar one. It comes in handy for all sorts of things.

Also, there are other ways to do things. In this instance where you're just trying to close a gap, you could just Smudge it with the same semi-soft round brush that you would paint with. There are always many ways to do things. Experiment to find out what works best for you, your current skill level and devices at your disposal.

I don't disagree with your method. In fact, I've created cartoons in Illustrator by drawing every vector line and controlling the stroke profile of each and every stroke. If you like granular control over every stroke and stroke weight, that is the way to go.

It could be what's presumably a layer with a mask that didn't quite tighten up good enough. If it is ou can press alt (or maybe it's ctrl) and click on the thumbnails of the masks to get an obvious outline and fix it.

1. open the tire image in Ps and place the logo in the same document
2. make sure the logo is an editable smart object - it will make it easier to rotate if you want to
3. use transform mode to place and adjust the logo - both logo and tire are round so you just have to adjust the horizontal scale and rotation of the logo layer
4. adjust if needed

Faster to push a button to get the exact tool you want in the set, rather than cycling through multiple keystrokes. I'm going over with the developer right now the things that will be the biggest time saver. The new plugin allows you to select an Action from a menu and assign it to a button, which for those of us with a lot of Actions is very handy.

I have the numpad on the left side of the keyboard, and have the hotkeys bound to be modified with ctrl, so I can use ctrl+pinky to hit actions without moving my hand from the ctrl/alt keys

And via AHK, double tap for certain things

so if I hit 7 on the numpad it's a stadnard 16 bit deconvolution, if I doubletap 7 it's a 16 bit deconvoilution with a subject cutout, etc etc.

Anyway, more options is always good.

I never got much joy out of macro pads or keyboards. I tried a bunch over the years, but SD (and its cousins, like Loupedeck) was a game changer.

Quick Keys is very well made. The wheel works very well and you can work the buttons by feel. I agree about Wacom. I hated mine, so Xencelabs was a fantastic find. Everyone I know who's made that switch is super happy about it.

The Xencelabs folks did a terrific job of handling all the pain points of Wacom, including a driver that is a doddle to set up.

Yeah, dead on! The plugin dev has this idea of liberating the user from the keyboard completely by adding all the frequently used functions to the plugin (like how you can assign OBS scenes to buttons). I'm trying to convince him that the least often used features, the ones you can never remember the darn shortcut for, are the best candidates, along with everything that's an awkward mouse journey to get to. Nobody (imo) needs to put Ctrl+T or Ctrl+J onto a Stream Deck button, but "Rasterize Layer" or "Replace Content" would be very welcome.

The other thing that would be massively useful for all of us would be for Photoshop to get the keyboard shortcut UI from Ae/Pr/Au that's now also in Bridge. Keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop are just a pain.

There was a feature in an IDE called JetBrains that would show you the keyboard shortcuts on screen for any action you used the mouse for...

And it recorded your frequency of use and would gradually stop reminding as you learned them.

Anything that could monitor what you were still using the mouse for and populating a list of "Things you should really have learned the shortcut for but haven't" would be fantastic 😄

In fact just in general it'd be interesting to see the metrics from a photoshop session for tools used, keys used and menu items clicked with a mouse. It'd go a long way to identifying issues in workflow. Tedious little things like breaking out the lasso modes to different keys so you don't have to use Shift+L to cycle them saved me frustration, as an example.

Also another tip is that you can bind things to F13-24 and hit 'em via AHK, which can relieve some keyboard congestion. I have my footpedal done thusly, it triggers an F13 which I then bind elsewhere in AHK.

The configuration software for it was sketchy but it does work - there are plenty of videos online about it.

The version I used was, it's a fairly common tool so there may well be an English version around. I translated it and made templates for translated software but wouldn't want to commit to being able to find them!

It was fairly straightforward though,

Yes you can set up macro keystrokes with it, and specify things like repeat rate and so forth, but what I actually used for was to bind up simple keys like a num pad and then do all the complicated stuff in autohotkey (ahk) One because it was easier than using the software, and two because all of my Photoshop actions and binds were already configured through AHK

I also didn't bother using the layer functionality, one because my auto hotkey modifiers don't need it, but also because I have a terrible memory - something which using the illuminated keys of a stream deck would help with, if you are binding up shortcuts that you do not use frequently

In general terms the hardware was quite nice, especially for the budget price! The keys are actual keyboard keys instead of the frustrating clicky tactile switches that seem to be included on things like the xence labs button bar

The odd shape though, made it impossible to fit alongside my keyboard in an ergonomic fashion, which is why I ended up not using it. If you were looking to purchase one I would look to purchase one that does not have a protruding wheel section, and instead get something rectangular that will more easily fit alongside the other things on your desk.

Thanks, but I'm in the US. And yeah idk how google lens slipped past my radar looks very worth downloading. And smooth move how you made it work with the easier software. So did you actually get that specific one from the link? Because if that one has all that stuff then I totally want to get it. I think I could seriously do some damage with that and my tablet and not even have to bother with a keyboard. Right now I feel like getting that and some glow in the dark paint to label the buttons is the way to go

Yeah the manuf costs of these things are... staggeringly low. IDK how aliexpress works in the states but for the UK a lot of stuff gets aggregated out to more local distribution hubs, so the shipping is also bonkers cheap.

I always wondered about having a streamdeck or not but eventually decided against. None of my work is high volume/ high speed work, more tedious skin work and while I do mistype some keyboard shortcuts sometimes I don't feel I am loosing too much time in searching for those, at least not enough to justify the (large) expense.
I have 8 buttons and a rollerwheel on my tablet, all set up to function differently depending on the software I use, and while I do quite often on the rare times I use Fresco on the desktop, I still feel more comfortable with the keyboard for Photoshop and Illustrator.

Yeah I think my conclusion was it'd help a great deal for lesser-used software or processes where the shortcuts don't get burned into memory. I'll be giving it a try with Resolve methinks, if I don't get tempted into buying their speed edit keyboard that is - as the price of that Vs the studio license is... compelling.

(One then wonders if the speed edit keyboard could be coerced into replacing my venerable NumPad for photoshop macros...)

Yes, I checked that one too.
Eventually I went for a low key solution that was a mouse withh plenty of extra button (that I use exclusevely for Blender) And I don't even use all the button I have set up.
You need to remember what the buttons are for 😂
Of course, it's easier if it's written on them! With large bright icons.
But I also tend not to look elsewhere when I work. Like I have my eyes solely on the screen. So I would probably have to rely on muscle memory to find those keys on the deck, so... why?
Last project where I did use my tablet keys where when I helped my SO with an Ancient Egyptian language translation project where we made some tests, decided that digitizing the papyrus was not precise enough, so decided to retrace entirely in Illustrator, so it being low-mental load/tedious work, I fired up the display pen, installed the tablet stand on my lap, put my feet up with some music on the telly, and used my tablet tethered, but as a standalone instrument, accessing the modifier from the express keys.
Apart from drawing with Fresco, I don't think I have any other workflow that whre an additional device would ABSOLUTELY save my life.

The only plugin I have is something to create luminosity masks, and it's more because it does that faster than I would, and since I don't necessarily use it often, it saves me from looking at my notebooks to recall how to accurately make them.

I tend to just use a curve over a grad map to pick out luma masks when required rather than generating them - I do like Affinity's implementation of Blend If for this, as it's 16 bit and really rather flexible

Much nicer than the PS implementation, though I appreciate the requirement for legacy compatibility chains Adobe's hands on this one.

I never tried affinity photo, but I became quite fluent in Affinity Designer and Publisher, I did love some stuff they had, particularly when it comes to the export assets options. But now that I can use the whole CC, I see that there is still a huge gap in features.

I reckon Illustrator particularly could do with a UI refresh (and AD is quite clean), but that would be just cosmetic at this point 🙂

you can use the pen tool in illustrator then manually adjust the curves i think or you can also cut the circles in there as well

once youve completed it just create outlines/expand it and copy it and paste it in photoshop if you wanna use it in photoshop

I installed that touch portal app and at no cost it can turn a tablet/phone into a virtual macro keyboard with even dedicated PS functions that easily allowed me to use a slider for brush size and another for hardness which is worth the time it took to install it alone. And I got a dedicated lit up ctrl+i button 🤘

There was delay as in while moving the slider and using the brush at the same time there was no change, but when I stopped brushing and started it seemed very quick to change even though I wasn't particularly paying attention to how quick it was. Invert mask button worked flawlessly

I ran out of space in my time, mind, and body to split any more to give them time to be read, so I am not sure how I would handle the intricate art of photo editing
Like, the fact I knew that rotating images by degrees not equal to 90, 180, or 270, would cause quality loss is a product of pure chance when I came across that fact on some online forum some years ago

Illustration is craft that requires knowledge of drawing and painting, each of which is a craft. If you read the terms and conditions of Adobe Stock, the subscriber has rights to use the asset(s). Not "anyone" that they happen to give it to. You could make something in Photoshop that has Adobe Stock images in it and give it to your client. That would be the standard practice. I can't download assets, use them and give them to whomever.

I'd probably flip the face horizontally first. Turn down the opacity and try to line up the facial features before you do the Auto-Blend.

Basically what you're asking Auto-Blend to do, paint a Layer Mask around the outside edges and such. Except, you're doing that manually.

First off all, it doesn't always work as expected. Next, those are two photographs in that video that are close to the same perspective. You're trying to use what almost looks like an illustration and blend that with a bad phone camera image. If it fails, which is appears to be doing, you'd have to do this manually.

You have to do what I said above. You should try to align the facial features up first. Eyes, nose mouth, etc. Scale and rotate them so that they line up.

You probably weren't deleting the face from the underlying layer. That's probably why it looked like it was just giving him glasses. You need to cut a hole in that bottom layer before you Auto-Blend.

But still. At the very beginning of the video, Unmesh mentions that you need to find images where the lighting matches and these images don't match.

The face angle/perspective and size also need to match. If not, they need to be flipped, distorted, and/or liquified into alignment.

You could do that either with a warp transformation (Edit>transform>warp) or the liquify tool.
It's more or less the same thing, except that in one you control the mesh with nodes, and the other you control the mesh with a brush...

I would sincerely try to past a new layer that contains an image of plastic and set it to screen

You also have an effect in the effect gallery
Filter>filter gallery, That's called plastic wrap. You need to try that to a copy of your layer and change the blending mode to screen. But I think you'll got better luck finding an image of plastic filem and place it onto your artwork

exactly like the plastic wrap. You could make your own (like manga artists do with a flick of the finger on the brush to imitate blood splatter) or you can find one of those textures online

The only difference with the plastic wrap is that there you'll have black splatter and either you don't change the blending mode, or you set it up to "multiply", that's because you want to keep the black. Also see if you can can find brushes that can imitate that kind of splatter. For example all the brushes that imitate street artists/Graffiti, would be useful as well. It's less "easy" than just taking an existing image, but you'd learn something new

applying some edits will be done with Adjutments layers for anything that have to do with colour and light, same can be done within the Camra Raw module as well

"edits" is very vague so if you can define what you want then it help

The cool thing is that you learn while doing things within the software, step by step

If your text is white you won't see the effect if your plastic wrap is set to "screen". Try with a text with another colour (say grey) and tell me if that works

This works completely differently than Photoshop though. It can be some learning curve so be sure to follow the in-app quick tutorials after installing it.

Either Photoshop and Lightroom are professional software so there is a base knowledge you need to have. That's why each of them have a in-built "quick start" tutorial set.
You can spend 20 years in Photoshop and still learn things (as I do)

There litterally 100s of font identification websites, not all of them are reliable, and some of them will give you what they have in store themselves (like "what'sthefont" will give you only what's available on "font.com", the parent website)
By the same token, Adobe Font will only show you what's available on Adobe Fonts, but in that case, all the fonts that it will show can be used for free with a Adobe account

If the video is static (except the inside of your aquarium) simply select the aquarium and add a mask to your layer. The layer mask can’t be animated so your aquarium needs to standstill all along the video.

I originally wanted to do it alone and my idea was to find a aquarium video online and just put it over the aquarium on the photo (I have 0 graphic design skills) and make a video out of it. I still think I could do it but it would look mid probably. The other thing I can't really do is to blend the silver/gold play button well. Sure I could just put the buttons as pictures and it looks 1 dimensional but I want them to blend in like a realistic photo.
