this order of operations does work as an action:
- Select group: (name of group)
- Convert to smart object
- Set selection to smart object's transparency
- Convert smart object back to layers
This results in the desired output. Thank you for your help!

i had a brainfart, i just that thing u use when u press add vector mask then press two buttons to turn it from white to black and not even 15 seconds later i forgot what buttons it is so if anyone can remind me that'd be great😭 i've never forgotten something i use constantly before
what is this gold role i have
invert mask ctrl+i ?
You need to click on the mask first.
You selected "Intermediate" so that's the color for that role.
ah moderate experience, lowkey forgot i chose roles
So i am working on a project where all the illustrations are in a single layer and I have to move the objects in the illustrations a lot
- need everything seprated in different layers
- illustrations extended using diff tools (ai, content aware fill, manual paint, etc)
I use photoshop heavily for this and want to keep AI usage minimum to maintain original illustration quality. I think I do have access to grok AI but havent used it yet. Would love to learn about workflows and tools that can help speeden this process for me, thanks.

Hi y'all, I need quick question, how can I put my original logo (I am designing Brand Guidelines) on Tennis racket net? Which steps do I need so I can have smthing similar that Wilson sport brand has for example on their rackets?
Thanks and cheers!
what is wrong with my photoshop content aware fill (i have plenty ram and graphic card that cant be reason for crash)
does opening 13 year old photoshop files cause this? could it be they are corrupted
hi guys i wanna ask where you guys find pictures is there library that u guys can send to me
Yeah person that took those pics, pay for them
what does this mean? the file opened anyways
hi I got photoshop very recently and have been using other art programs otherwise can someone tell me why the eyedropper tool was normal when I first turned it on but now right clicking instead takes me to brush settings
<@&548221840750018590>
Thanks!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @ivory trellis (current: #162 - 11)
Right-clicking the on the Canvas with the Eyedropper shouldn't open Brush Settings. It should open a context menu that looks like the attached screenshot. Something seems wrong there. I would restart Photoshop and see if that changes.
There are a number of reasons why this might occur. Too much to get into right now. If it continues, the first thing I would try would be to reset the Workspace. Main menu: Window > Workspace > Reset [WORKSPACE NAME]
Many people use Adobe Stock. That generally requires a subscription but with a CC sub, I think you get some freebees. There are also sites like Envato (also requires a membership). There are free sites like Pexels and Pixabay that could be helpful but so many people use those free images, they are becoming a bit cliché to use. But if this is just for practicing your image editing and compositing skills, it's probably fine.
okkk could the file being old cause it? file corrupting coz of it.
I am answering this question: #❓ask-a-question message
I doubt file corruption or version mismatch is the reason you would see that error message... but anything's possible.
I see thankyou. Usually copying layers and starting new files helped me. Hence I suspected.

Generative Expand in Photoshop
I need detailed information about how colors are generated when using Generative Expand (or any AI-generated content) in a CMYK document.
What color transformation process is being used? Are the generated pixels initially created in an RGB color space and then converted to my CMYK profile? If so, does the system rely on my document’s RGB profile, or does it use a proprietary Adobe profile?
There is clearly some form of color conversion happening. How can it be avoided? (Starting from an RGB image is not always an option.)
In some cases, there is a visible edge where the generated content meets the original image, suggesting a mismatch—especially when the generated area appears to be converted into CMYK using the ISOnewspaper26v4 profile.
interesting question I do not have an answer but a further question.
What happens in tools like clone stamp, content aware fill and so. - Do they stay CMYK ?
is it possible to extract texture from this illustration and create my own custom texture brush to use to recreate this style ?
Hi everyone I'm pretty new to designing, and I want to create t shirt designs and cover arts for music. There is a style of this that focuses heavily on lighting and shading and I'm not really sure where to start. I was wondering if anyone has a guide that might help me. Or would be willing to lend their knowledge. I'm not sure if there's a specific brush I should be using. Or a way I should have my psd setup. Here are some examples of the style I'd like to replicate. Any guidance at all is greatly appreciated.

Maybe you want something like this?
I like the grainy look but that's not quite what I'm going for. If I had to describe it I'd say the images I sent felt clean? Almost too clean. I can see that they often retouched the skin of their subjects and such. I've just never done any of it before

you're welcome.
so im trying to fade this fuhass picture into the background by using a gradient mask
i did what the tutorial said but for whatever reason the gradient option wont come up where you can adjust the sliders and colours
and when i move that line, it doesnt blend into the background
Both sides of the gradient are White. Black means transparent (hidden). White means opaque (visible).
guys i mean is this me am i this bad at a adobe its a joke everytime i try to use this software theres always something just being annoying
alr lemme try
and it worked
i mean thanks ig im just fried
How about actually learning what you're doing and why so that you understand the software and why it works the way it does.
Most software apps are confusing until you actually learn them.
Following tutorials is great but if you just follow them blindly without understanding why you're doing something, you'll continue to be caught in this trap.
well i would learn but i thought id be able to learn while i go along watching 'how to do' videos
i mean i come on here when i cant find it on social media + id rather find a solution quickly rather than explore youtube for ages
because of time
It's fine to ask questions here and we'll help you.
And doing tutorials on YouTube is great. But its extremely important to understand the core concepts used in Photoshop. Like Layers Masks. It's probably one of the single most important concepts to grasp in the app.
so should i just invest the time into watching like full on youtube videos?
Yes. Because you can't sit here all day and wait for answers because someone might not be around to answer. In those instances, it would be faster to get answers elsewhere.
There are good YouTubers who only do Photoshop content. Some do full courses.
well im trying to learn as fast as possible
i get an idea and then go and try and make it
and when i cant do something go and learn
@civic portal Clone stamp, content aware fill and others tool don't generate pixel out of AI. They simply use the pixel already in the file. Works in CMYK.
hii I am new at ps can some tell if my psd archive can be opened 😭
hello guys
hope yall are doing great
i wanted to ask something
its a questiong about actual design patterns
ive seen soo many designs in pinterest, reddit etc where people actually design words and objects in a way where it really synergizes with one another. But when i try to do something like that, my brain goes blank. I dont even know how it is possible. is there any formula to it? Can yall show me some ways to do this please? and give me some tips on it? i would really like to try making one
i am talking about the posters where someone makes something like, really tall words inside a building(maybe a cipping mask) or effects like objects coming out of words etc etc
i am very sorry if i was unable to make the question clear to you. I wouldve liked to post the actual picture but i forgot to save...(i can try to find another one if yall like)
Yep... Finding then posting example could help people understand better what you're looking for...
ok then
something like this
i really cant find that specific one i saw..
i am really sorry 😢 \
I see that is nice
Hi, I'm using Adobe Photoshop 2023 and I'm a complete beginner at manual digital restoration. Trying to use AI as minimally as possible to reduce error.
But I need help, how do I blend the colors of the clothes to make it look more natural? First pic is the original. Second is where I'm currently at.
do u guys think ai will be able to replace us in the future? Or will it completely reshape the industry? Everyone is talking about replacing people but if ai replaces everyone than the industry just collapses and dies, so you really think that could happen?
No. It's all hype to sell GPUs and frontier models to inflate their stock prices. AI is just a tool. Without a skilled artist and designer, it's like a slot machine. Anyone can insert a few tokens, pull the lever, get lucky and win. That doesn't mean they will always win.
AI is a great tool and can be very helpful but its not a replacement for a skilled artist/designer.
hmmm alright alright, great view on it
That's why there are so many people turning up in here asking for skilled Photoshop users to "fix" the mistakes in their generated images.
ye but, ai will only get better and better right? So within a few decades i just dont see any good future outcome
Because an image generator can create "something" does that mean it's good? Does that mean it's a quality product? I mean, non-artists can create something but have no idea if its good design or not. And even if you can discern that image gen has created problems in a design, do they even know why its bad or what questions to ask to fix it? And what happens when the AI can't fix the image?
"Move the text down 2 inches." - Image gen would probably not get that right it would require 20 attempts to get even close. Whereas, in Photoshop, we select the Layer, get the Move Tool and move the text exactly where it needs to be.
You can't really do that with image generation because there aren't any "layers" at all. It has to render an entirely new image to make that change. Maybe it will get there someday but we're nowhere close to that right now.
When a robot can open Photoshop, and move the mouse or work with stylus on a drawing tablet and do I can do with my hands, then I'll start to worry.
Telsa Optimus can barely fold laundry. heh
Meanwhile Elon is out there saying its going to replace all surgeons in five years. Sure, Elon.
^
Clone Tool, Healing Brush, Remove Tool (if that is even available in 2023 version; I don't remember.) Paint it with the Brush Tool. I would do retouching tutorials and learn about the process and which techniques pro photo-restorers are using.
Without AI help, you can assume its a lot of Clone Tool and hand painting.
once it gets there, do u think artists/programmers etc will all be worthless? or will there always be a demand for them? Or will it just reshape their job?
I think it will just be another tool. At the rate its going, its probably going to be too expensive to use. Companies who have embraced the whole vibe-coding ecosystem are beginning to do the ROI and are discovering that its way too expensive for what you actually get.
For all of the perceived performance increases they get, it creates just as many problems. Now that all of the frontier models are moving to token-based billing (cancelling the all-you-can-eat plans), it's going to get expensive to just blow money on generators.
When a guy like Jensen Huang goes out there and says, "Don't bother learning how to write code, or do design work or whatever" you have to look at the motivation. He wants to sell GPUs. So the hype-factor is off the charts.
Art and design work has ALWAYS been very competitive. Anyone who can afford an Adobe subscription can call themselves a designer. Are they really though? It's the quality of the work you do that sets you apart from the competition.
Can you produce quality work with just Creative Cloud apps and no skills? Maybe. You might get lucky once in a while. Can you produce quality work with just an image generator? Maybe. If you're lucky. Skilled people with good ideas, good design sense, experience operating the tools can control the process. They're not relying on luck.
Does anyone know how to do the circles in this logo? I want to vectorize this logo but please don't tell me I have to make the circles one by one
Nah. You shouldn't have to draw them one-by-one. That would drive you insane. However, I would recommend doing this with Adobe Illustrator and the Transform Effect features. It makes the task pretty simple (after you learn how to use the tools). I did something similar a while ago. Take a look...
Postscript: professionals design logos using Adobe Illustrator anyways so that is the correct tool for this project.
How do I make good movie posters? My main inspiration rn:
I dont wanna make it as simple as the star wars one and the batman one, but something similar
As long as we stand on this Earth (now i am going to yap in philosophical way), live, breathe and create, AI can be only tool to us humans and not replace us, so, as long as we respect each others as designers who work day and night to bring some quality work on the table.
Clients will always want fast/quick answers to resolve problems w AI but if they dont know how to use it...problem will still be there
AI is great but the results often have too many errors and more often require a skilled human being to fix and make the image useful.
So if you love compositing and know Photoshop, AI offers an endless supply of stock pixels for your comps.
Start with trying to create the perfect silhouette of whatever the main subject is in your design. Do you have the ideas sorted out?
Hey guys!
how do i put a drop shadow on my shape without it doing the bottom part as well..? second pic. i want the drop shadow all around the outside, just not where that red circle is on the 2nd photo
which do you guys think is better
I'd probably make a copy of that shape to create a custom shadow layer. Then you can paint on the layer mask to remove parts of it.
Probably the first image because its less symmetrical and more interesting. Please post this sort of thing in #📝project-feedback
okok thank you!

Hi @winter ermine
In addition to D. Humann's good suggestion:
Use a layer mask or vector mask for the cutout.
Then select: “Layer Mask (or Vector Mask) Hides Effects” in the Blending Options.
I want to cut this girl (she's a grandma, actually) from this pic. How can I do this fast?
select subject
Thanks.

Which icon is that?
I mean, when I'm trying to pick an object - that's what I see...
1st one
I feel like I've already answered this question... with this exact example.
Ah, sorry. Forgot.
Ah, right: I can't use it. It says to convert it to RGB.
So convert it to RGB
Will that damage the pic?
It's just more preferable to remain png.
It can be RGB without adding color to the image. You can convert it back to Grayscale later if some reason that is important. I'm not sure why it matters but whatever.
RGB is a color mode. PNG is a file fomat. Do you understand the difference?
I know, lol. Just saw that and confused...
I don't read that language so I have no idea what it says.
Converting JPG to RGB.
And?
I have no idea what you're talking about now.
You want to select the thing away from the background. You need the tools. Thus, you convert the Color Mode to RGB. I'm not sure why you would be reluctant to do that.
And I don't understand the arguments you're making about JPG to RGB or whatever it is that you're saying here. This is making it extremely difficult to help with the problem.
Okay, bro. Don't scold me, please.
Thank you, I'll manage that.

Can you tell me what asl is do you just import that into ps and dose image for you?
I don't understand what you're asking.
Some one save the project to a asl file I’m saying is that all you need from there out put it as a png to get a glass image ?
No. Look at the page you posted. There is a whole tutorial there showing 2 different methods, each with multiple steps to complete the effect.
Ah ok no way you can give it ago been working on Some it months now put can not find a good png Liquid Glass
No. Just dragging in the Layer Style they provide does not give you the entire effect. It only gives you a starting point. You're expected to do the rest of the tutorial.
Sorry again: how can I automatically adjust pic's sides?
Sides?
To become like this.
The Crop Tool would probably be best. Draw the box to define the size you want and then hit ENTER.
You're the best, bro.
Thanks.
in CEP is there a way i can check if photoshop is focused or not? maybe hook onto any events related to it?
I don’t have ps
We've already discussed this. You post the request in #💬chat-general. If someone is interested in working on your project, they might reach out to you. There are no guarantees anyone will want to do it.
but how did you slim down the circle in the first 3 seconds?
Used a tapering stroke on the shape. Then split it into 4 segments. Then Illustrator allows you to use a dashed line for the stroke. And with the right size and gap width, you can make them look like circles.
If you ask in the Adobe Illustrator Discord, I'm sure someone can guide you through it. If not, I can try to explain it.
Here ya go. I re-recorded the first part with the whole GUI visible so you can see me doing that.
To recreate that image you have would require some experimentation. The approach that I suggested might be helpful. Might not. If @tame cape is around, maybe he could suggest a method for doing that. He's better with Illustrator than I am..
There is probably an easier way to do that.
You might have to end up using the Spiral Tool and that dotted stroke technique with the FX Transform. Something like that. Or maybe doing it with a "Blend" might be easier.
I'm kinda busy at the moment with other things. I can't figure it out right now.
Thanks alot man. You're a pro

I have question: So, I am making some mockup designs and for "ordinary" ones and those that people most use for their design YouTube has a lot of videos...
But what happens if there is some mockup design which you can't find as tutorial explanation, is ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Claude as AI Tools good replacement for something like that?
I am talking about idk...putting Logo on white socks, since, there isn't any video about it. And then AI gives me step by step which tools are good for it.
So is AI Tool in this situations "alright" for use or should I just experiment tool to tool until i found my good combination and answer for it?
Cheers!
It's fine to use it like that. If it actually helps. Those apps get a lot of things wrong so just beware of the information you're getting.
Yes thanks, I just followed something like that step by step (so I can learn and use it for my next projects in late times) and yes it is important to know when they make mistakes.
Thanks on answer!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @ripe quest (current: #2 - 3363)
But what would your advice be on how to learn on "your own" is that even possible or guides are best possible tool for it?
If I was trying to learn an app... Like Photoshop, I would watch YouTube tutorials, read the User Guide, ask questions in this Discord. Probably use Gemini too but mostly as a last resort.
Oh okay, great advice, I am gonna stick to first two mostly 😅
Cheers!
If Logo is let's say 600×400 px, Distort/Displace tool would be less than 10 for horizontal and vertical scale?
Not sure I understand the question. Sorry.
Hm, sorry my english can be weird, lemme try again.
If i have smaller logo in PS that needs to go on object as Mockup design and it is Sock for example, while going into Distort > Displace, which numbers do i need to have in my mind for horizontal/verical scale so that Logo isn't too flat or smthing like that?
I don't really know how to answer that. If you're 'distorting' it, you probably want to keep it as close to proportional as possible so it doesn't look squashed or stretched.
Oh, so it is actually how i want it to feel like more realistic or plastic? If i understood it.
If more realistic i should try to keep in mind "correct proportions"
I really don't use Displace that often. I don't find that it works that well for me.
Aha, I guess we all have our preferrences, but could you tell me your approach?
I would always attempt to scale things in proportion, if possible.
I am lil bit dumb in that area, is there some tool for that? Proportion stuff in Photoshop?
It depends. Photoshop has methods of locking the height and width so scaling an object remains at the correct aspect ratio/proportion. There is a setting in Preferences for it but in new versions of Photoshop, I think its on by default.
I'm an old school user so I keep that off and I hold the Shift key to do it. But its mostly because of my muscle memory.
Thanks, so is it like similar to Measurement tool in Illustrator? Or different thing?
I mean, both apps has ways to lock proportions or skew and distort things out of proportion so it's difficult to discuss that wtihout discussing a specific tool or technique.
Right, thanks for help/advice and spared minutes for this rusty Graphic Designer, have a good day! And sorry for too much asking, lol.
No problem. Have a good one!
Sketchy?
Yeah like the outline
I suppose it could be a font but my guess would be that it's hand-drawn lettering.
where do you learn to hand draw stuff like that
Graffiti lettering is an artform like other styles of lettering, like a form of calligraphy.
Probably a lot of practice.
In the old days, vandals used to tag things using a big fat black magic marker. Probably still do. You could probably translate that to a digital drawing tablet and practice that way.
how would you go about masking out the netty headpiece, the background being grainy and gray makes it feel impossible
Yeah. That one is gonna be very difficult.
I've tried every technique i know and its failing sadly. Imma try putting these into few AI tools to see if it may help
Thanks 'for the flowers'

Hi @elder lichen & @ripe quest
It makes perfect sense that Illustrator’s standard spiral fails here: Illustrator generates a classic Archimedean or linear spiral, in which the distances between the coils remain constant.
However, when viewed individually, each “arm” shows the opposite: it is an exponentially opening spiral whose radius increases outward while becoming extremely flat at the center. Furthermore, the distribution of points along this curve is not linear—the distances between the points become progressively larger toward the outside.
Neither Illustrator nor Photoshop can handle either a logarithmic spiral or logarithmically increasing distances when using Blends, Pattern Brushes, or Objects on Path.
With just a reasonable amount of effort, you can apply a combination of blends, pattern brushes, Expand, and Objects on Path to a manually created spiral. Applying a Transform Effect to this then produces, for example, the yellow result shown in the screenshot. It’s close, but the progression in the spacing between the circles is clearly missing. The visual appearance of the white-colored original can hardly be achieved this way.
A more promising approach is to use and customize one of the Fibonacci scripts (density balance, growth curves, spacing variables, etc.). However, this requires expert knowledge, and testing the settings will likely be very time-consuming. The magenta and light blue results show a so-called phyllotaxis rosette.
This can be done using a crescent-shaped mask, and then all the circles covered by the mask can be removed.
Searching for the Fibonacci spiral might also be helpful.
Hi @fast ridge
Unfortunately, I don't really get what you're trying to say with those emojis. What do you think? Do you have any helpful information on the subject?
You've removed them all again. That's fine with me, too.
Ok.
… a few attempts later …
It seems you can recreate the basic layout in Illustrator after all, with a few effects.
😉
Thanks for looking into it!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @tame cape (current: #13 - 315)
Sorry, it's covering a bit of the outline. How can I adjust it back a bit? I can only select further.
Adjust the back... a bit?
Well... I want the outlines to remain.
I don't understand what you want to adjust.
Look at the 2nd screen...
Outlines are cropped.
I want to change the selection, but it doesn't allow me.
This is why you use a Layer Mask and mask the pixels instead of deleting them. You can't "adjust" anything after you've deleted it.
Ok, look: I have to clear it by myself because it's not selecting as I want.
Instead of ERASING, you add a Layer Mask to the layer and paint on the mask with black to hide the pixels. Then, if you make a mistake, you can paint with white on the mask to bring the pixels back, make them visible.
Using the Eraser tool is a permanent operation. If you mess up (and you will mess up), you can only use UNDO, which is not going to work.
Hopefully, @elder lichen won't overlook it.
🫠
how do i fix the little seperation on the left in the background. I extend the backgorund a bit and it looks weird because of the grain
honestly nvm, its not too noticable LOL
I would only add noise/grain as the last step in the composite. Trying to 'match' noise after-the-fact is difficult and sometimes impossible.
yeah i agree, i added the grain to my previous image and then later went back to try to extend the background
This is why we work non-destructively with Smart Object layers so that things can be easily changed.
okay ill keep that in mind from now on! Thank you !
Hi @elder lichen
