Challenge 2 layer effects
@glacial path My starter file for the background image is original, I didn't edit it and just tried to change the lighting on the turtle to make it cohesive, but I should have done the opposite and changed the background instead😀 Thank you for your suggestion! I think it does look better now)

Hi everyone, just catching up with this weeks challenges. Had a bit of a break so just getting back in the game.
Tried to make this look embossed!
Struggled with this a bit. Loved the symmetry tool and played about with gradient overlays. I wanted the thankyou to look more like it was written with a sparkler though so would really appreciate some feedback on how to achieve this.
Photobomb for day 4 here. Do you think there is enough of a blur? I used field blur, would gaussian be better?
Here is my revised day 1 attempt. I didn't do exactly what was suggested, sorry. I got a picture in my head and had to try it! I don't know what to make of it. I was afraid the hand drawn highlights might be wrong, but here it is...Any thoughts?
@rose salmon I think your Day 2 challenge is looking quite solid! I felt like something wasn’t quite fitting in right, and at first I thought it was just due to the effect where the only color is in the design, but I think that’s a cool idea. Then I realized I think it’s because the paper edge of the book seems too bright. If you see the dramatic shadow on the side of the coffee mug you can kind of see how dark the bottom sides of the book should be. A masked multiply or levels adjustment layer could be an easy fix for that. Maybe something like this?
@fast moth Hah, very nice! The masking a blur looks good! It could be cool to see a little warm light hitting the edge of part of the creature. As if it was maybe bouncing off that dock a little. Maybe with a color dodge or screen layer? Just a thought. Nice work!
@rose salmon Haha, that's great. I like how he's stepping in front too. I think maybe moving him down just a notch or two might help fit him in the scene a bit more, it almost seems like he's standing on something slightly higher. It could also be nice to add a warming or yellow photo filter, and maybe mask it out on the right side so you can mimic that intense yellow lighting the other people are getting from the left. Nicely done!
@buoyant nova Really nice work, the book cover is looking solid! Nice work on the bevel and emboss effect!
@sudden hawk Very nice! I really like the dolphins position. It could be cool to put some fish or a diver behind the dolphin looking at the camera to give more of that photo bomb feel, and that way the blur of the dolphin will really nicely contrast the sharp focus of whatever is in the background. Good job!
@ruby panther Haha, I like the expression on the bird. I wonder if the bird could use a little boost in contrast to match the hard light and contrast of the sheep in the background? Maybe a levels adjustment to boost the lights and even the darks just a bit? Nice masking work as well!
@full topaz Looks good! I like the sort of radial effect of the shapes coming from the left. Nice work with the blend modes, glad you could join us!
@magic hedge Challenge 4 looks good! I really like the color contrast in it too! I feel like maybe the turtle could use a bit of a brightness boost with a levels adjustment to fit it in a bit more with the high contrast of the rest of the scene. Nice work!
Edit: I saw the update, It’s looking good!
@patent trellis Hah, these challenges for Day 4 are looking solid! I think the one with the pidgin is looking good, but yeah, I think perhaps the blur could be just a touch more dramatic. It might even help to scale the pidgin up a bit to give that classic photobomb foreground look. Might add some nice depth too if it were overlapping the jets a little more. Nice work!
@bleak fossil Thanks Sam

@whole tangle I think it looks great! And no problem, we encourage people to take these challenges and run with them. Definitely always feel free to experiment and try different things. I really like the hand drawn highlights, it gives it a really interesting style. My only suggestion would be that it might look nice to change the black text to maybe the color you used for the blue Photoshop text or the pink 30 text. Might give the whole design a more uniform look. Really great design and I like the subtle effect of the blend modes.
@blissful wolf I think there’s definitely a stylized look to this method of making fireworks, but I think it has a really cool look! At first glance it seems like a real night sky but then you notice the more stylized look and texture to it which I think is really interesting. I like the strong glow and focal point in the center of this design!
@kindred kernel Haha, these are great Gerard! I love how the pidgin seems like its ruining a very dramatic Instagram photo or something. I feel like the yellow bird in the second image could probably use a color filter or color look up effect? The photo is so blue and kind of washed out and I’m not sure if the saturated colors of the bird seem to fit. Just thought. These are looking good, solid masking work!
@sudden hawk That emboss effect is looking good! Definitely a solid 3D feeling to it. The mockup looks good as well, though the white areas behind the text seem a bit off where they break up the smokey effect behind them. Really cool effect on that background!
@subtle briar I really love the color variation that you got in each of the fireworks for Challenge 3! It adds some really nice depth and variety while still keeping a uniform look. The size variation looks good as well!
@rancid vale The lighting and masking is looking really solid on Challenge 4, hah. Nicely done!
@pure herald The Rhino image is looking really good! The depth of field effect is reading really well. I especially like the second image since both elements read really well, but we get a nice focus on the foreground. Lighting looks really cohesive too, nice work!
@buoyant nova Looking good Susan! I like the variety in line length for these stars. It gives it a really interesting decorative feel. I think you could probably even scale up the biggest star a bit more, but that’s just a small personal preference thing. Really nicely done!
@bleak fossil

Hello! I hope everyone had a nice weekend 😄 I used my time to catch up with you guys. Here is the third challenge. I'm not sure if I used the right font. I'm also not sure if this is too bright. All your comments are welcome.
Do you think that the pigeon and the background are correctly pieced together? Also, do you think that the colours are well combined? Thank you for your feedback 😃
Thanks @bleak fossil I shall rework on both the challenges and post it again as instructed. Appreciate your valuable feedback 🙂

@young karma I like the minimalist design of this book cover. Using white for the bloodstains is a great way to bring across the general idea of the topic without being too in-your-face while doing so. The bottom right text could be positioned higher up to balance out the padding. I believe the rectangle around the book title isn't quite centered - perhaps you can center it horizontally. 🙂
@young karma When using script fonts, it generally is recommended not to change the tracking. Here is an example of why this is important. The letters should be connected like the version on the right since this would be the way an actual person would write it.
And as you can see, this isn't the case here.
I would suggest decreasing the tracking or using a non-script font. 🙂
@slate spade Great job! The brick pattern is a unique way to use the bevel and emboss feature in Photoshop. Overall the design looks clean and well-executed. For the final touch, you could think about adding a displacement map to make it look like somebody actually painted those letters on that wall. Here is a link to a guide: https://www.behance.net/gallery/81965679/Photoshop-Protip-Displacement-Map
@plain sable Very nice! The color of the placed arm now matches the background color more closely. 🙂
@subtle briar Your first submission with the dog in the foreground looks entirely natural! I would've believed you if you told me this scene actually happened like this. You got the right amount of blur in the foreground and the colors match the background well. Great job! 😄
I would say you also nailed the second submission with the butterfly and the flowers. You can be proud of your work 🥳 !
@shrewd rivet this winter scene looks beautiful 😄 ! It looks like I can see some green tones on the wings here. I would recommend desaturating the colors to match the black&white look of the background.
@blissful wolf Great design 🙂 - When presenting your design, I would recommend using a softer drop shadow and a slightly textured background. The right crop is also vital to balance the assets visually. This is how I would adjust it.
Perhaps you can also reduce this shadow here. If those candles are burning, you shouldn't see a shadow right behind them. 😉
@glacial path, thank you for the feedback! I will fix it!
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
@shrewd rivet Woah, a lot is happening in your image! The placement of all those new layers looks great and you have used a believable lighting scenario. The focus, however, doesn't look like it would match the reality if those subjects were actually there. To illustrate this idea you should always think of the three-dimensional placement of those objects, or rather the distance from the camera lens, if that's easier to visualize.
I tried to arrange the layers (which isn't easy if you don't have access to the original file)
The eagle is very far away from the lens. The surrounding area is in focus, therefore the eagle should also be in focus.
In your image, the bear seems to be partly in focus and partly out of focus, even though the road right below the paws is in focus again.
In reality, you usually just have one focal plane. Everything that's not near or on that plane will become blurry.
So my suggestion would be to pick one focal plane and blur everything else which is not part of that general area.
@bleak fossil I have reworked on both the challenges i.e. Day 2 Challenge - Book Cover and Day 4 Challenge - Photobomb as per your instructions. I hope it is looking good now. Feedback awaited. Thanks a lot for your guidance it's of great help #✂challenges-feedback @sterile bane 🙂

Hello everyone! What do you think about this one? It was a bit difficult to find a background and to fit in the cat. I'm still not sure if the cat looks like it belongs but I had a good laugh 😂
Does the color overlay mesh enough with the background?
Thought I would share this one. Does it work?
@whole tangle yes! the brown tones really tie the whole design together
@sterile bane Thanks! It was fun!

I know the selection by the foot is a little rough, but what do you think about having the B&W background? Should it be color? Thanks!
@kathleen if you have a 1920 1080p background and you wanna fill it into 1080 1080 square pic hpow to do it with content aware
@sterile bane
Playing catch up with my submissions. All feedback is welcome and appreciated. I am working on the blending of multiple objects.
Need to work on my line pressures. Appreciate your feedback.
Hi @vast hemlock ! I'm not sure that content aware fill would be the best option. What about trying to crop it down to 1080x1080 square?

Day 5 challenge
Here it is. What do you think of the glow around the objects?
Oh, it needs cropping so here it is again, cropped.
Awesome job guys!
@cold cedar this is so dynamic and fun! love it. I think the glow is nice on the skateboard. the glow around the other objects is a little difficult to see.
@fast moth awesome - it really reads as transparent! i like the subtle gradient as well.
@tacit condor super cool 🙂 I think you could take this to the next level by matching the blue in the sky to the blue in the snowboard. I wonder if a color adjustment layer would help?
@winter tinsel sneaky sneaky! 🐯
Thanks @sterile bane! I will see about making the glow better on the hearts. And, love your streams and your thrifting. I thrift, too.

HI, I didn't know how to get the green out of the vulture wings
and I don't know how to post under my picture help...
So my suggestion would be to pick one focal plane and blur everything else which is not part of that general area.
@glacial path So I had several layers here. I tried to "unblur" them after I made a mistake and could not. I agree, the focal point is a mess. Then I thought I should do some type of shadow but couldn't recall how to do that.
please am having difficulties getting the ball to glow. 😩
@peak sentinel are you using the Outer Glow or other technique?
@coral stone Outer glow
@peak sentinel My suggestion is to click on the Reset to Default button, so you can start playing with the default values. I did a quick adjustment on the sliders to create a subtle glow, here are my settings: 🙂
@coral stone Ok thanks lemme try that

Day 4 Photobomb. This was lots of fun. Background images are all mine. Dove and Gecko are AdobeStock, Octopus is PixelSquid. Camel is a stock image that came with some program or equipment 10 or more years ago.
I can't decide which is best. What do you think?
@forest aspen thanks for sharing your work! i love the octopus/dove combo. I think it would be even MORE dynamic if the dove was even bigger and being cropped more.. like it's super close to the camera!

hi all, had to do this one quickly, hope you like it. let me know what you think, thanks, my original pixxs
Day 5: electric skateboard. The background is an adaptation of something from AdobeStock, and the skateboarder is from Pixabay.
Challenge #5 I decided to go a little different way with this) Don't know if it makes sense what's on this picture, not looking at the original...
@sterile bane here is my Photoshop Challenge #5, replace an object in a photo using Content-Aware Fill. I separated the skateboarder, used Content-Aware Fill and the Clone Stamp tool to replace the missing sections of the wall, moved the skateboarder to the right and decided to have him ride a "Back to the Future" Hoverboard instead of a regular skateboard. The more I started working with it, the more I thought it looked like a great hero image or banner for a website for Hill Valley Hoverboards. If only they were real. 🤔
If only it was this easy to get rid of traffic in real life!
@winter tinsel Hah, perfect, nice work with the photobomb challenge! The sloth was a great choice. My only suggestion would be to increase the contrast of the sloth with a levels adjustment or something. As is it doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the image which has decently higher contrast. It might also help to somehow separate the values between the big tree in the background and the sloth’s head, it actually took me a couple seconds to realize it was a tree and not a hat or something on the sloth. Maybe something like this? Good work :D
@peak sentinel Hah, looking good on the Day 4 challenge! My main suggestion would be to try and match the lighting of the guy in front to the people in the background. The background has really intense shadows on the right side of their face. So maybe used a masked levels adjustment layer or multiply layer to try and match it a bit more? I think you could even make him a bit bigger to push that up close photobomb feel. Maybe something like this? Nice job!
@magic hedge Ooh, I like it! Almost kind of looks like it's magically or digitally phasing in, like it's in the process of being created. Maybe having a gradation from real to "digital" looking could make what it is more clear? Either way it's a really cool effect!
@forest aspen Really nice Marie! I like the sort of illustrated look of the skateboard. I think the effect and glow would be a lot more apparent if the background had more value and/or color contrast. Right now it seems like a yellow glow on a bright yellow background. Maybe if the background were a darker neutral blueish tone or something that contrasts it? Nice work!
@kindred kernel Nice, makes me think of the Silver Surfer, hah. Due to all the texture of the water I think it might help if you can see a bit more of the solid edges of the board. Currently the blue texture obscures that and it makes the effect a bit hard to read. Maybe lowering the opacity of the dark blue, or saving that texture closer to the area to the left where the water covers the board? Really liking that light blue glow though, looks good!
@cold cedar Very cool, this is a great image for this challenge! The glowing design and shapes looks really good. I think it might help the whole thing read a bit better if the background was a bit darker. I think contrast is definitely a big key in getting glows to have a nice impact. Nice job!
@fast moth Looking good! I really like how the board makes the image behind it blurry, really helps sell the effect. I think you could help the glow pop if you darkened the sky in the background a bit more. Since it’s a sky I think a simple gradient on a multiply layer or something could be a really natural way to do that. Nicely done!
@subtle briar Ooh, cool idea! Has a really nice ghost type effect. I think maybe casting just a bit of a blue glow on his arm a bit more could be a neat effect to fit it in the scene even further. Very nice!
@dim brook Great job Ceci! Really great glow effect, the scooter makes for a strong silhouette. Really nice contrast against the background, gives the whole effect a really nice read. Well done!
@high rock Very cool, I really like the stylization of the fireworks on the card challenge! The shark image looks really good too, did you add some extra sharks in? My only suggestion is the shark on the very right, and maybe the one below look like they don’t match the shark up top as much as they could. I think because they seem to have noticeably higher contrast, with both lighter lights and darker darks. I think lowering the contrast a touch to match the top shark would really make it convincing. Either way, it’s looking great, the color matches really nicely!
@tawdry crown Very nice, I like the idea! The text choices work really well I think. It might be nice to add a bit of a subtle shadow under the board to really place it in the scene, and it could be nice to make the purple text a little bit brighter pink to match the board color. Might unify the image a bit more. Really nice design!
@autumn turret Having spent like 3 and a half hours in traffic today I can agree, hah. Really nice job! That’s definitely a good image to practice that technique. My only suggestion is that the dark spots on the street could probably be cleaned up even more with the clone stamp or something similar. Nice work, looking good!
Man was that one a workout. A little late but a little late is better than never, right! 😝. Took a lot out of me and searching in order to get the blend modes right in with the outer glow to make it appear "glowing." Harder concept than I originally thought. Regardless Here is a Glowing Blue Whale that I think looks really good!! Any thoughts anyone??
Day 5 - Content-Aware Fill
Challenge 5. I think I went a bit over on the glow. I was using Anna McNaught's glow trick painting on a gradient map. I used content aware to remove a couple of other objects also.

Challenge Day 6 - Thanks Kathleen for this live about gradients, I did this Spotify cover at the same time that you were explaining with the ressources from the starter folder. It has a lot of flaws but it was fun to do 👏

@tawdry crown super cool! i like how you even integrated the hover board by having the strap go over his foot.. nice detail 🙂
@sterile bane Thanks!
@kindred leaf ooo nice use of a gradient on the pavement. it helps to lead the eye of the viewer upward
P.S. i really love that stock image. i want to use it in a design soon!
My attempt at content-aware clean-up and removal. Plus a little glow... Thoughts?
PsDCC 24fb20 - What do you think of the text placement and color choices?
Hey @vague shuttle. Very creative work, I like the space theme 🙂 Just a little thoughts: Seems like the flares have a rough cut at the top and the edges are appearing a little bit. You can fix it by using a soft brush and a layer mask or if the layer is on Screen you can Levels to increase the amount of black of the flares, it will make the edges disappear.
In general, I would reduce a little bit the amount of glow or reposition some near the rug so it can get more attention. The model is a little transparent near the legs, maybe you could increase her opacity and reduce the amount of blur as well.
Here are my submissions for days 1-4... I went for a consistent "30 years of Photoshop" theme with all of the designs. Actually fired up Photoshop 6 on Mac OS 9 for the a e s t h e t i c screenshots.

@patent trellis Yes, to get the glow effect just right, you have to tinker with the original photo since you're practically relighting it from scratch. I would suggest darkening the background even more and letting some of the original texture show through.
@severe tartan Well done! The perspective looks very convincing and the glow effect is integrated nicely into the overall scene. I would suggest also adding the glow effect below this shoe here to complete the effect.
@ruby panther Haha, you didn't overdo the glow at all! Given the right adjustments, it can be even more intense! The sky adjustment (and replacement?) is incredible. Nice job. Just keep in mind to mask out the clouds in front of the glowing balloon 😉
@rose salmon Love what you did with the car! I wouldn't stop there - the glow effect can totally be more intense!
And I would suggest using an orange glow for this element here
the contrast of this glow here is great! Perhaps you can tighten up the mask here.

This is my submission for the Day 6 - Looooved this challenge. Got to blast Stranger Things soundtrack while doing it. BTW did you see the teaser for season 4 is out?? Maybe you can feel some cool Soviet wind in the cover 🤣 ?
I think the red circle where the light comes from... is a bit flat... and i just didnt work enough, but was out of ideas how to make it more realistic
Day #5 🦋
@kindred kernel Wow, this design looks epic! I love the glitch effect you have added behind the glow. The entire design could be a stunning abstract poster piece. Well done 🙂
Redux...found a bit o time. whatcha think @coral stone ?
@dusky burrow Yes! Those butterflies are a great addition to the design! I would say you could also add some glow around them, so they look like they're glowing. I believe this would improve the overall look of the scene 🙂
Looking great @vague shuttle! The new background gave a special touch for the composition! Awesome job 👏🏻
cheers @coral stone I'm grateful for such epically positive feedback...it helps
@young karma This looks stunning! The warped background is such a great idea and the red color works well with the blue-ish landscape 🙂 . To make the red circle less flat, you could use a gradient to add some shading
in combination with the multiply blend mode
@dusty pond very nice adaptation of the challenge 🙂 - the green particles seem a bit too large. Perhaps you can use a smaller brush to create finer details. The colors overall are on point and the added title at the bottom ties the whole design together 👍
@vague shuttle Nice work! I wouldn't go too far with the noise slider in the layer effects. Also be careful with the spread slider in the glow settings 😉 - high noise and spread values can look fake if you aren't careful.
Hi, I didn't like this one and after I finished I figured out that I did it kind of wrong.
VoodooVal?
Challenge 6: gradients The nomade if from AdobeStock, while the fountain and rock formation are from Pixabay. I used gradients twice on the fountain and one on top of everything for an over color/contrast boost.
Do you think the glow looks too cartoony :)?
Hi PS DCC thanks for demonstrating the symmetry tool. I had fun playing with it. I made similar fireworks the way @sterile bane demonstrated. Thanks that is so cool. I love that tool. I transformed the layer using perspective and warp. I also love the saber tooth brush you showed us Kathleen. thanks and happy birthday ADOBE. 30 years of creativity... live long and prosper.

@forest aspen Ooh, super cool. Interesting to see you put all these elements together, I like it! My two suggestions to push this even further would be to maybe increase the shadow on the left side of the rock to closer match the nomad, and to use a blending mode (I used screen) to bounce some warm orange light up into the shadow of the robe. This should match these lighting of the two elements a bit more and fit the nomad into the scene even more. If you can find reference of people on hot sand you see this effect a lot. Maybe something like this? Really nice work!
@queen surge The fireworks look great! You really nailed the effect with the motion, color, and texture of the whole thing. A lot of energy and the purple tones add some really nice contrast without being overpowering. Really nice work!
@bronze helm I don’t think it looks too cartoony, but it really depends on what you’re going for. I think the glow on the right hand side is a little hard to read since it’s a light glow on a light background, so it’s a little hard to tell what’s going on. I think the triangle on the bottom left looks really good though, very clear read against the dark background. Maybe a bit more contrast in the other area might help? Cool concept to this design!
@subtle briar Ooh, that so sad D: Really nice work on the effect though. The light transparency effect and the way you repeated the blue color and glow in the text gives the whole design a nice unity. Nicely done!
@shrewd rivet Really cool, I love the pop of color in this image! The graphic splatter effects add an interesting stylized element to the whole design too. My only suggestion would be that you might get a cleaner, more natural edge on the rounded area of the board and wheels with the quick selection tool. It could also be a nice to add a touch of glow if that’s the effect you were going for. If not I think it works without it too. Nice job!
@warm oasis Ah yes, the notorious llamabombers of Scotland. Scourge to tourists everywhere. Nice work XD The focus and placement really sells the effect, and the llama was a good choice, hah.
@plain sable Nice, content aware fill looks good! I think the glow effect can be really tricky on a light background like this image has. It might help to increase the contrast of the transparent metal object a bit, and maybe even give the purple dots a brighter whiter center glow. Nice work!
Day 6 looks awesome! Really love those wavy lines.
@safe mirage Really loving that cool-warm color contrast! The lighting effect is looking really good too! The framed doorway makes for a nice focal point, nice job on the reflection as well. I think the ice texture in the lower right (I think that’s what it is) could possibly be scaled down a bit to match the scale of the rest of the image, but that’s more of a nitpick. Really nice work!
@sudden hawk Ooh, really great style and look to this design! I like the background texture as well. My only thought is that it might look good to scale up the astronaut a bit and maybe even move him down and to the left a bit to overlap the pink circle. The three shapes around the text level seem to all be more or less the same size. Scaling and moving the astronaut will give it a bit more visual hierarchy and get the eye a more natural way to move around the page. Just a thought. Really nice design!
@fast moth Ooh, awesome atmosphere and effects around the ring. Really love that smokey look and the sort of wispy effect around the ring. Really nice job on the glow too! My only suggestion would be to soften up the edge of the glow on the ground to make it look a bit more natural. Really cool!
@sudden hawk Challenge 5 looks really cool! I like the little star effects too. It might look nice to add just a touch of pink glow/reflection on the ground beneath the shoe. Might be a nice little addition to really fit it in the scene. Nicely done!
@magic hedge Very cool! Really liking the bold color contrast, and the gradients look really good. The little particle effects add some interest as well. I just wonder if they text could read a little bit stronger. A slight glow from behind the text could give it a nice pop off the background and fit the feel of the rest of the image, but it really depends on the look you’re going for. Looks good!

PS DCC #6 Gradients
@tacit condor really like the gradient pattern
I'll upload my PSD soon so we can talk about all of the adjustments!
Here's my live file for today's challenge. Check it out and let me know if you have any questions! I used a large soft brush to paint on the masks. To keep things simple, I used the same mask for all of the lighting. You can use the same mask across multiple layers by dragging it onto the desired layer and hold Option (or Alt) at the same time.
To make the ground light, I used a large soft brush and made a dot. I then used Cmd+T to transform it and stretch it out horizontally.
For challenge Day 7. I'm afraid the poster might look creepy.
I went for a lighter mood. Challenge 7.

@fast moth Nice mood on the image 😍 My suggestion is that you could increase the contrast between the text and the background image. You can do this by changing the color into a lighter tone and create some glow to give that neon effect 🙂
@mild spruce. I like this font that you used, great type choice! For the glow I think you can use a brighter tone than the color of the text and bring the neon effect a little bit closer to the text. You can create some levels of the glow by combining the use of Outer Glowand Drop Shadow, like Kathleen showed on the stream 🙂

Day 2
ok, I kind of combined two days into one, because I don't have a lot of spare time, but let me know what you think.
@subtle briar Very creative work! My only suggestion is to try to use lowercase type, since this is a script font, it would "connect" more the text 😉
I actually did but I guess that's how the font is, I can try a different font

Day 7 - Type
My take on the type challenge.
A day late with the gradient exercise but feeling much more inspired tonight. Worked a radial gradient around the moon to glow a little as well as one with the type to look like its partially in the water. I think there was another one over the whole image to try and get a better glow from the moon but didn't quite work as expected so I may tinker a bit more
Day 7s text exercise took a turn for the paranormal. Was really diggin the glowing trees @sterile bane had in the video and when was messing around I ended up with this glowing light in the back that felt very extraterrestrial. The one thing im still messing with is a way to get the eges of the text a little less harsh between the letter and the glow
Here is my final Day 5 submission per @glacial path's suggestions for more original texture and darker background. Thank so much!! Looks much more realistic now.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to evil
Submission for Day 6!!! Gradients were super fun to work with. I have a lot for all of you on this one!! The waterfall, the bluish-ness of the background is due to a blue gradient with blending modes and the light rays coming out of the trees are made with ellipses with radial gradients and then rectangles!!

Still playing catchup - This was Day6 - the original image
Still playing catchup - This was Day6 - with it looking like the viewer is on a porch or bridge or some other building
How would you recommend that I push depth further in this? Should I add more transparent layers of fog?
hello Everyone sorry if I haven't posted for a long time but here it is for you all
My submission for Day 8.. I feel like it could use some work though
@cosmic knot Ooh nice, the red text on the cool background makes me think of some 80s horror movie or something, hah. The font choice definitely adds to that mood a lot. Really cool!
@mint vigil Very cool, what a great photo for this challenge! I really like how unified the colors are in the whole design and how the monochrome color of the background really lets the other colors pop.
@subtle briar Nice, I think this design works quite nicely for combining these two challenges! The light source is looking really good! I think maybe the top edge of the light beam could be a bit brighter? It seems a little dull at the moment. Other than that everything is looking really solid, text looks really good too!
@blissful wolf Really cool design and mockup for Day 2! I think it might help to boost the light tones on the text a little bit to read a bit stronger and closer match the contrast of the rest of the design. Really cool font style. Looking solid!
@severe tartan Ooh, very dramatic looking. I like the green text against that more muted blueish background. Really nice contrast, the whole thing reads very well. Nice work on the glow!
@autumn turret Nice job on these challenges, they’re looking good! I think the glows text could maybe be brightened just a touch, and I think perhaps the highlights of the inner tube in the pool image could be brightened up a bit to fit with the contrast of the rest of the scene. It might also help sell the effect of the text being submerged if you brightened up the water a little where it meets the text. That sort of highlight around the water’s surface you see when things are sticking out. Nice work on these designs!
@young karma Looks good! I think the text fits nicely with the sort of blue green color palette of the photo. I think the text could look nice a bit smaller in a single line leveled out more towards the middle of the image, but that’s really just personal preference. Nice work!@sno.e#4904 Ooh, very cool. Love what you did with this image. The color palette and contrast works really well. Really nice font too, has a bit of that neon look to it. Great work!
@magic hedge Really cool look to this text! Has a bit more of that 3D feel which adds some interest to it. I feel like it could look nice to put a cooling photo filter or something onto the background to push it more towards blue which might make that green pop even more. Just a thought. Nice work on the glow!
@winter tinsel Really nice contrast on the glow in this image, and nice work on the glow effect on the ground. It might help to brighten up the ground glow, currently it almost looks like the same brightness, just blue. Well done!
@vague shuttle Ooh, really interesting effect in the background texture and all the particles/circles. Really interesting look with the 3D element of the text. I think it’s a bit busy overall, but I think if you darkened down the background overall it would really allow the text to pop out and be the highest point of contrast and give the whole image a better focus while still maintaining the interesting background. Really nice work!
@bleak fossil, thank you! I will try those changes

superbly cool constructive feedback, cheers @sterile bane hmmm, the story behind the design? wanted to create a looking-glass effect. a fantastical doorway into another world, where an alternative self lays in wait on the other side... this is the tweak per your input. used glass filter, gradient overlays, and textured brushes on the "doorway" ellipse, and masked the rainbow edges. thoughts?

Took this picture on a coastal drive in Florence,OR. I'm glad that I got to use it)
I’m trying to get caught up on all the challenges. Taking it back to the book cover. This was the 1st challenge, I believe.
@dire glacier I love the changes you made to alter symmetry- the little town and foreground give it a good twist.
@mint vigil Thanks! It was lots of patch tool trying to make the right look different.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to anialady
Challenge 8 masks gave me the idea too mask out windows and mess with what could be inside. No real rhyme or reason to it. Got a little adventurous with the arm coming out at the bottom and the person above that - felt like some nice depth with things coming out of the window. Kinda want to work at it a bit more to maybe make some sense? or a coherent theme.
Mirrored a mountain landscape. I tired to shrink the background mountains on the right to make it look a little different, but then had trouble filling in the sky with more clouds. But i think the scaling worked. I also really tried to get the middle seam to look less obvious and think it worked well. Looking at the snow on the right, looks a bit rough....
@autumn turret I ended up using liquify a bit to fix my mountains, then a lot of patch tool
Looking at these amazing symmetry landscape works, sometimes I feel like my brain is twisting topsy turvy. It wants to see the symmetry, but it also sees the changes. I'm really glad we did this challenge!

Hi @mint vigil thanks for the comment. I’m not in San Diego, not even close (England). We were on holiday in Vegas a few years ago and drove down to SD for a few days so that original is from way back then. Loved it, hope I can revisit sometime.

Mirrored the photo but had a rough Time with the spot healing tool
@crimson lynx me too! I found the patch tool to be working best in my case
Here is my day 8 masks challenge.
@whole tangle Well done! I love the added smoke. It adds a lot of atmosphere 🙂 . I would suggest masking some of the smoke to reveal the foreground and the sky.
so like this
@crimson lynx it looks like you have accidentally filled the selection with a pattern instead of the content aware fill tool. you can also use the spot healing brush tool to remove this rock.
then you can simply paint over this area 🙂
@young karma I mean that's the point of this challenge 🙂 . The landscape is supposed to look reflected.
@young karma Nice work! The cloning in the lower left corner is a bit rough, but you can use the spot healing brush to paint over those hard edges 🙂
@bronze helm Great job with the glowing font and the background. IMO, the falling particles could also be glowing (unless you're going for snowflakes, in which case they should probably be much smaller 🙂 ). You can simply change the blend mode of the particles and add an outer glow via the layer effects
I Going to try again I did use spot healing tool and patch tool and painted over it and it did not work for me even tried eraser I have rewatch the retouching video and Thank You Tim and sai 😀
Spending my Sunday catching up. Here is my masking submission. Share your thoughts and suggestions.
@patent trellis This landscape is absolutely beautiful! I can see why you would want to go there 😄 - your edits are mostly seamless. Some of the rocks on the left could still use some work and the mountain in the center has some repeating elements, but overall you have a working composition without relying too much on symmetry. Well done 🙂
@cold cedar Nice work, the two different version look very realistic and I really like the black&white version at the top. The mask is on point and the wide aspect ratio of the photo adds a lot to the atmosphere of the three photos. I would suggest removing some of the color noise (especially if you look at the road) 🙂
@glacial path Thank you for all your advice and help! I used a cloud brush on the masks to reveal some stuff, but it never occurred to me to use a gradient! Cool, thanks again, I will try that.🙂

@whole tangle Using a cloud brush is actually very clever! It won't produce any repeating textures if you use it carefully 🙂

@mint vigil Ooh, cool effect on the plant image! Nice job masking it out behind the plant. It could look nice to boost the brightness on the pink effect a bit to give it more of a glowing feel and really make it pop. Nice job!
@tame jacinth Awesome, welcome in Lore, glad you could join us! I don't think it's too simple, it really just depends what you're going for. Often times simple can be the best solution. Really cool texture on this! It could be nice to give the text a bit more contrast so it reads a bit stronger, but that's really just personal preference. Looks good!
@solid knot Very nice! I like how the focus is on the ice cream. It could be nice to have that green glow effect continue on the right side of the ice cream to look a bit more consistent across the image. I like the stars too, nicely done!
@safe mirage These are looking so good! Loving the contrast you got in the Day 8 challenge. Really convincing lighting, and super interesting image with all the outside elements. Very well done!
@vast hemlock Hah, loving the puppy picture. Really great depth with how you masked out the text behind the dog. Really solid graphic read between the 3 elements of the dog, text, and background. Great masking on the dog as well!
@pallid radish Very nice! I like how you changed the color of the signs to break up the symmetry just a bit. There’s a slight white line down the middle you could clean up if you wanted to. I think the spot healing brush could probably make easy work of that. Nice job!
@honest gorge Very cool! Where is this location? Looks very cool. I like how you broke up some of the landmarks and details to create a little bit of asymmetry. Really nice image!
Really great work on the other challenges as well, looking really solid! I especially like the mood of the image with the fog, the black and white really adds to that dramatic feel as well.
@cold cedar Looking good! Sort of a dreamy look to the image. I like it. I think you could decrease the contrast of the tower in the background to the left. Everything else is really faded due to the atmospheric perspective, but currently the dark tones of the tower don’t match. It could also be interesting to saturate the colors in the sky a bit more. Might be an interesting color contrast between that and the muted foreground which could be an interesting look. Nice work!
@mint vigil That's awesome! I grew up in North County San Diego. I've been down to OB a lot, really cool place. Really cool image, the colors really pop. Always cool to see people use their own images in these challenges. Nicely done!
@unkempt field Really nice work! Did you take this image? I was just mentioning to Anialady that I grew up in San Diego. I like the depth and sort of arrow/triangle shape this composition creates. Looks good!
@blissful wolf Really liking the surreal feel of this image! The orange archway creates a really nice focal point and contrast against the blue sky. It could look nice to push this even further by brightening up the blue area within the archway. Would also give the silhouette of the person more of a pop. Really cool design!
@compact pecan This is a really great photo for this challenge! Gives the whole thing a really interesting island feel. Really liking the asymmetry in the foreground too. Nicely done!

Retouching with a bit more saturation ... @bleak fossil
@bleak fossil , I've tried to follow your advice, what do you think?
@pallid radish in addition to Sam's idea, I also noticed the artifacts of the content aware fill on this sign
To reduce this issue, I would suggest using a new layer, masking out the sign, using a gradient, sampling some colors from the sign and using that gradient to smooth out the variations in brightness
this is what my gradient layer looks like. I added some grain and a highlight
and when I set the opacity to around 70%, it blends with the original sign
you could even add some text 😉
@bleak fossil Here in São Paulo 😎 🤣 hahahaha. Thanks for the feedback 😊

@coral stone oh wow! This transformation from sunset to foggy morning is really impressive! I believe you could improve this effect even more by using the clarity, texture and dehaze slider in camera in combination with a gradient to only apply them to the top half of the image. you could then drag them down to increase the haziness of the background
I have only applied the fog to the center part of the image

Day 1 - Cover
Day 1 😝
Here's my cover page. It's not me or anyone I know. Just an old photo collected from a flea market.
I wasn't clear as to what exactly it was asking, so first I started off with designing the backdrop. I then used many layers to form the wormhole, used a blur tool to get the shining light effect, a dust brush tool and then selected my subject this beautiful pooch and got him coming thru the portal into space. I am also working on another one if this is not quite what your asking for this first challenge.
Here's my attempt. Share your critiques.
Hello everyone. Whatever picture I use, the moment I click on " Gradient map " in Photoshop I end up with that kind of result. Does anyone know what the issue may be please ?
Choose "Gradient..." rather than "Gradient Map...". They are different, the first is a fill effect.
Well, the point of the challenge is to use the gradient map if I'm right. And u're not supposed to end up with this anyway (according to the tutorial I've seen on internet).
oh, I just noticed you have an image unddr that effect
Yep, see ?
It's almost a red square with a full opacity, I don't get what the problem is.
Try a dieerent gradient pattern? those colors are very similar, possibly not allowing enough differences through in image.
According to all the videos I've seen the point is to have a nice gradient matching the light of the picture automatically.
It doesn't do that at all when I try. I've tried with many pictures. Don't get what the issue is.
Try a very light color on one end of gradient, and a dark color on the other. The image will come through better.
Ok, I had figure that kind of solution too but I really think that PS isn't supposed to do that. Thx 😉
Ok. Thx @rigid heath, I was totally wrong about the " automatic " part of the thing obviously. All videos I've seen must have been with users who already had good gradient colors to begin with. My bad.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to willeybrown
The gradient map is kind of like a LUT - colors from light to dark get replaced. Make a gradient with white at one end and any dark color at another an you get a duotone image. You can use any colors you want as long as you adjust brightness of the colors from bright to dark.
Ok. Thx again 😉
I need some help... trying to select a brush layer to move it around but its not working. How can i select it to move?
whoops I figured it out.... 😅
I hated my gradient, so I added black and white to the gradient map to pull out more contrast.
Challenge Day1 So useful gradient map😁
Day 1 Challenge - Gradient Map - Cover #✂challenges-feedback @agile ruin... Feedback appreciated 🙂
I'm late
That was fun - once I managed to get my laptop to work! I have searched through every tab & menu, and pressed every button, and I am forced to conclude that I have no "shapes". To be fair, I couldn't even find "legacy & more" ☹️ Also, I have no idea why my ellipses have a red ring around them. 🤔 On the upside, I now have a reasonable idea how gradients, and gradient maps work. Thanks @agile ruin 👍 Looking forward to the next challenge. 😃

@rigid heath wow I love this! what you did with the gradient map was great, really adds depth and dimension to the image. I also love your circuit design elements. I was recently working on a logo in AI and my favorite part was
Wait quick question...
Why'd we use gradient maps instead of gradient
@mint vigil Thank you so much 🙂 When not playing with photoshop, I often have a soldering iron in my hand - so the electrical symbols came to mind right away.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to anialady
@orchid aspen regular Gradient looks very uniform, it also masks the image over which is applied. Unless you change the opacity, or layer FX as screen or overlay, if you use a two color gradient it will completely cover your image. gradient map analyzes your photo and applies gradient to areas based on luminosity. In this image, my face on the left has gradient over it, and my face on the right is using gradient maps. In he left version the gradient is from blue to opaque. Gradient map preserves and even enhances contrast. To me the gradient map gives us the ability to create surreal looks and amazing control of the colors in your entire picture. I have only used the blue, yellow and white in my original cover.
😦
@rigid heath I was recently making a logo and I used illustrator shapes to create the snowflake of the circuit. I think circuits and parts are great elements to easily make your image say: "I do electronics". I also like neural network style designs- they are very visually pleasing. If you look at webpages of crypto currency, almost all of them use a polygonal map or gradient design. There are bots that you can use to take a photo, change it to polygons (you specify how many points) and the image goes straight to illustrator or photoshop. We do a lot of soldering also! This is the logo I made for my bae- he is a network security engineer and we attend a lot of electronics based events. Last year I made my first neopixel arduino project. :). Anyhoo great work with your cover layout.
My cover page revised after a re-watch of stream.
i use premiere pro, is there a discord for that?

@young karma Nous avons tous dû prendre ces premiers pas! 🙂 (Transl: We`ve all had to take these first steps!)
@plain swan I love how the background shapes direct your gaze to the center where the portrait is. I like the overall layout a lot!
It's so exciting to play with PS

@dusty tree Why not???
@young karma I adore the Weekend. With the gradient map applied, I absolutely love the lighting on his hair! great color duo. I spent a lot of time waffling on my main color choices, and even googled "vibrant color pairs". I kind of liked what i chose but I really like your color pairing.

@obtuse ruin Looking good, you did Mr. Meow proud, hah. Gradients are looking good, nice job!
@rare cradle Really nice job. I like the balance of the composition, the text looks really good. Very nicely done!
@vital tendon Nice work, the graphical element looks good! I like the cool/warm gradient too, Nice job!
@tepid ridge Really solid! I like this color combo. Really nice contrast between them, and makes for a really pleasing gradient too. Great balance of shapes of graphic elements!
@young karma Nice job on this design Elroy! I like the diagonal lines. I think it could be a good look to reverse the contrast between the background and the portrait. The background green is brighter than the portrait's green, and the background blue seems slightly darker than the blue of the portrait. It could be good to switch this to give the portrait more contrast for a stronger focal point. Nice work!
@oblique anvil Very cool, I like the sort of combination of an old style photo with the more modern look of the colors and shapes! Cool texture too, it could be interesting to see the repeated (but maybe to a lesser degree) behind the other circles maybe. But that’s really just personal preference. Nice design!
@wispy skiff Really nice shapes and textures on this design! I really like the subtlety of the background texture, the gradients look really nice too!

Day 2!
Hi everyone! I'm from Chicago! 😁
original file
@winter tinsel Hah, very nice, looking good! The colors you used for this make a really nice gradient. I think perhaps the lines could be used in a more repetitive way to act as more of a consistent graphic element. Just the two thin lines by themselves almost look a little out of place. Or even masking them behind some of the circle shapes could be a good look. Just a thought. Nice job!
@still harness Really cool, the edits definitely give the desert image a sort of surreal feeling. It could be nice to maybe desaturate the blue in the top part of the sky just a touch to make it look a little more natural, or at least extend the gradient of the sky colors to be a more smooth, gradual, transition. Nice work!
@whole tangle I really like what you did with the colors in this. The soft color of the sand against the purple of the shadows is an interesting look. Almost gives me a sort of slight 90s vaporwave vibe. Looks good!
@trail field You’re not late at all! It’s totally fine to do these later in the day and post them at any point, or really any time throughout the week if you miss any. Really like this edit, the texture does a really great job to give it an aged, vintage photograph look. My only nitpick is that the dark shadow in the hills in the center background seem out of place a bit. It’s darker than the shadows of everywhere else, and often times the shadows in the distance as slightly lighter due to atmospheric perspective. It’s a minor detail, but figured I’d mention it. Nicely done!
@ruby panther These edits definitely bring this image to life! The sky replacement looks good and definitely adds a lot of interest. The really bold colors looks very cool. Though I think the blue of the water may seem slightly out of place. Maybe if it was warmed up ever so slightly more towards the warm pinkish hue of the rest of the image. It might also look nice to warm up the hot spot in the sky to shift to a warmer hue towards orange/yellow. Might help it look more natural. Just some thoughts, this is looking solid!
@wary dust Looking good Kara. Really cool stylization going on there. If you wanted to push it even further it could look nice to use the sky to add a bit more contrast. Either with a sky replacement, a simple gradient, or even just more contrast against the land. Just seems like a good opportunity to push that stylized look even a bit more if you want. Nice work!
@young karma Nice job, this turned out nicely! I think it just seems a bit dark overall, a quick levels adjustment to boost the light could work quite well.
@unreal spear Really cool effect on this! The background sort of seems like frosted glass or something. And I like the sort of neon look of the graphic elements in this design. I think it could be nice to sharpen up the portrait to give it more focus, and to leave the deeper contrast in the darks (like we see in the eye on the left hand side) to strengthen the portrait as a focal point even further. Very nice!
@young karma Really nice work with all the graphic elements in this design! I like the monochromatic look of the whole thing. It could be nice to see a little more value contrast between the circle and the background, but that’s really just personal preference. Really nice look to the whole thing!
@fickle hound Looks really good! I like your use of all the shapes and graphic elements, and I like your use of white and that more red/purple as subtle accent colors. Really nice design!
Thank you @bleak fossil Your advice is always solid!

Day 1: done before I saw the broadcast. OOC, LR & PS. This first one is a cropped image before LR & PS
This is after changing out background in PS
This is after making lens corrections and global changes in LR
Day 1: after I saw broadcast. I'm not comfortable going as far from reality as Kladi is. I wasn't able to get the intense colors that way it was demonstrated. Maybe on a different image. Stock image from Pixabay. This is the after version.
This is the before version.
Cool.
Remember to join me tomorrow at 9am PST for another Photoshop Daily Creative Challenge. Then I'll be back on the stream for an Illustrator logo design stream at 12:00 PM PST!

Day 1 Retouch
I rather liked isolating all the sand marks to that one.
I also used many of the techniques for this challenge to play with another photo, this one was taken by me.
Am I the only one whose Lighroom interface was very different from Kladi's?
Definitely colours that I'm not in the habit of using!
Submission of yesterday's DCC 3.2.2020 w/ Kladi - An introductory Graphic Self-Portrait. (My last submission a moment ago came out incredibly grainy/pixelized, so I lowered the res, hope that helps..)
DCC Photo Retouch w/ Kladi 3.3.2020 - Taking creativity into my own hands, I decided to retouch a photo I've been wanting to edit. The photo was pretty dark and shot by a friend from across the street at my direction. This was not a RAW photo, so my editing capabilities were limited; however, I feel that Lightroom still did an impressive job with its capabilities on a jpeg photo.
all caught up. didnt realize how difficult it was to come up with patterns and colour combo 🙃
I was going to add a lens flare then I realized that it was already there. I took this picture in foggy sunset at the Point Loma marina.

@bronze helm this is my original image
I've learned a lot with these challenges over the last 8 months 😀
I am not surprised, I only did one so far but learn so much already
Little late but still wanted to share. Everyones stuff looks awesome loving this page.
@compact steeple very nice! this reminds me of the classic blueprint look, where all the shadows are replaced with this cyan-ish tone. To balance out the cold shadows, I would add some warm tones in the highlights
I would say this balances out the color palette 🙂
@plain sable just a small trick, when retouching photos, always have an eye on the histogram. if you see a line right here at the edge, it's a subtle hint to tone down the exposure of your image (unless you want pure white colors in your photo)
Gave +1 Creative Carma to Tim Ester
That was fun, although I was totally confused at first because I was in Lightroom Classic so I had none of the same things on my screen, whew!
thanks @glacial path
@bronze helm Nicely done 🙂 The new color palette reminds me of the two-strip look you used to get with those early color films 😄 . I would just have an eye on those highlights (the whites on the lighthouse). They're already very bright and the edited image is even brighter. So if you're note careful you will lose detail in those bright areas.
@heady stirrup I like this more abstract and vibrant version of the photo 😄 . But when you are transforming the colors like this, you also always amplify the color noise. Let me show you:
this is the hue map of the image. notice the green grass and the orange glow in the background
now if you zoom in, you see a lot of color noise.
which becomes obvious when looking at the hue map
some of the pixels have a completely different hue, even though they're right next to each other.
This is usually not the case for "normal" images. So my suggestion would be to reduce the color noise
like this
now, the hue map has much less noise and the overall image looks more realistic 🙂
@young karma I would just add a bit more punch to the green, to increase the contrast of the photo 🙂 . Well done!
I am quiet lost here, I do not know where to find very first challenge, pls someone help me

Before.
Day 1, Late work, because finding ways to put other shapes😅
This is my first time in Behance live videos and first time using Lightroom. So far I like Lightroom looks interesting. I worked with the photo provided it, also with another for Shutterstock. Please let me know what y'all think
My intention was to make this photo look aggressive, use the content-aware fill in both Lightroom and Photoshop to cover the mountain peaks reflected in the water. I would appreciate any criticism
This was my first time working with Lightroom.I tried to give it a mysterios night look.
So my original was shot on holiday in Tenerife two years ago. Shot in RAW, converted to Jpeg and resized to fit the upload limit here.
And here's the retouching changes a la @agile ruin stylee. I learn't such a lot of useful stuff. Never used content aware fill before, or the healing brush. The downside is I now have to re-edit every photo I've ever taken. 😂 😂
